Re: Anybody applying to NBC's new quiz show?

To me, it looks like a show that had potential but has been brought down by an attempt to be something that it's not. Of course, I didn't know that when I auditioned a month ago. Much to my surprise, I received a call this morning asking if I could be there at 7am tomorrow. I'm not optimistic about ...

Re: Boardies on the Show - Season 29

This has probably been discussed before, but someone really needs to come up with a retronym to distinguish those (like iowabelle) who were on the message board *before* getting the call to play. No offense to anybody, but I don't see any particular reason to root for someone who found this site th...

Re: Calling All TOCers 2003 - 2013

Although I think Mark did an excellent job in trying to assess who gets in and who doesn't, he (and he'll be the first to admit this) does not know what's going on in TPTB's mind. NO ONE is a lock. I can even see Ken Jennings not participating (though personally I would be very surprised by that). M...

Re: Canadian Contestant Search

There is another way for Canadians to get a Jeopardy contestant audition - through a contest with the Hamilton station CHCH which broadcasts the show: http://www.chch.com/contests/jeopardycontest/ It isn't much of a chance - only one audition - but you get a chance to meet Bob Cowan and Annette Ham...

Re: Calling All TOCers Class of 1986

Not sure where Chuck is these days, but he didn't show up at our 30th college reunion a few weeks ago (about 20% of the class did). On the hand, he wasn't mentioned in the list of deceased classmates (fortunately, still rather short).

Re: Jeopardy Productions should be courting NPH

Anyone calling TPH a lightweight can't have seen the Tonys last night, or read how much he's being credited for the ratings boost. He's not too big a celebrity for How I Met Your Mother , where I bet his salary is a lot lower than Trebek's. At this point, he's no longer in the running to make a car...

Re: Calling All TOCers Class of 1998

I think you should upgrade Claudia Perry. As a television show, I suspect that J! will be looking for diversity in the contestants for this tournament thus making her selection more likely. (Note: Please do not infer any political belief of mine that I believe that this should or should not be the c...

Re: Thursday, May 30, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Lark - Great game. After your opponent took a big lead, I thought there was the possibility that he would just continue on a steamroller, but you showed your grit and simply wouldn't let that happen. It was a great achievement to fight back to the pre-FJ lead by a combination of a number of good get...

That really sucks!

Started trying to login 20 minutes before the test and was never able to get through. Yes, I had run the "test check" earlier and that was fine. :(

Maybe they'll have a make-up like they did last year.

Re: Upcoming Contestant, new to the board...

Welcome to the board! That reminds me, slam hasn't posted anything here for six months. If he doesn't respond to this one, maybe there's a reason . . . Rex Glad to see that slam's rule lives on in the board's collective memory. :) The main reason that I don't pop by here more often is that I'm rout...

Re: 21st Century music quiz

I was curious about #13 and #20 since the songs sounded pretty good. My research led me to YouTube and just for the two songs the view count total was over 253,000,000. I'll give you a hint, Mark. #13 has been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the last two months. :) Sometimes, it helps to have teena...

Re: Ask Me Another

Coulton is great. My teenage boys became aware of him when they started playing Portal. My older son downloaded some of his songs and played "Mandelbrot Set" (since I was a math major) and I loved it. From there, I downloaded a bunch of his other songs, too. I even took my sons to see him in concert...

Re: Difficulty/selection of jeopardy clues

Since the writers do assign difficulty based on their subjective evaluation, sure there can be, and occasionally are, valuation errors that show up in the board. But as Paucle points out, the writers are very experienced at this process and probably have a well-developed sense of what's easy, modera...

Re: Scoring / Analysis Tools for Practice

I'm a bit confused, DoT. How did you determine how many clues out of the clues revealed that a particular contestant knew? I agree that's a good way to measure "buzzer proficiency" (though ideally we'd want to see the percentage that was recognized by Alex out of the times that the contestant tried ...

Re: Alex retiring

I'm guessing NPH makes a lot more for How I Met Your Mother than Alex does for Jeopardy!. You're probably right. But he might be able to do both - the way Meredith did both Millionaire and Today. And HIMYM is probably going to be ending shortly before Alex finishes his 30th year. NPH is going to be...

Re: Alex retiring

Of course I'd watch the show no matter who is hosting (And of course if Alex changed his mind and wants to host for 10 more years, I'd be happy too. BTW, mod, I agree, can we get this thread title changed to something like "Who might be the next host after Alex?") Anyway I'm sure Jimmy from the Clu...

Re: Alex retiring

I've seen suggested on other web sites (but not here), Jimmy McGuire of the Clue Crew. He hosted the rehearsal game in Washington. I bet Jimmy would love the job and he's probably had more practice at it than anyone other than Alex. I think he would make a good replacement and provide continuity fr...

Re: Final Jeopardy wagering theory

Second place is always the hardest position to wager from. First place nearly always wagers for the simple lockout (Shoretegy notwithstanding). Third place usually has some straightforward reasoning available like Doug outlines above (though there are some wrinkles here and there). Second place ofte...

Re: Alex retiring

I think Bergeron would be fine, but his age works against him. He's 57 now and would probably be 60 before Trebek's earliest likely retirement date. I would think that J! would want someone under 50 at that time so that there would be a chance to build another 20+ year run.

Re: Audition Emails

Hiya - long time lurker, first time poster. I got an email inviting me to the NYC audition on June 7th. I believe I scored a 37 on the March test (after a 34 in January!) This is my first time passing, so any audition advice would be much appreciated. Does anyone know where they typically hold the ...
