Re: GOAT Tournament Day 2 (1/8/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For FJ!, my mind immediately leapt to Napoleon who was well know as being short. Fortunately, I then started thinking of US presidents also know to be short around that time. I first thought of John Adams, but realized he was too early. Then I thought of Martin Van Buren, who was too late. I knew th...

8:00 p.m. ABC – Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions (premiere) Viewers: 14.01 million (#1), A18-49: 2.3/11 (#1) If the tournament holds these wonderful ratings, I would expect some more J! primetime programming in the summer, maybe something akin to Super Jeopardy! where the field is expanded. That w...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 1 (1/7/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This game will demoralize borderline folks like me who are prepping for the audition test. Yikes! So many, many NHOs and HTFWIKTs. Then again, I'm not a trivia imbiber like many are here (and like those three obviously are) - my meager knowledge is all-natural. The sheer speed on the wordplay categ...

I'm with Alex - that think music seemed short. Did anyone time it?
I don't know that it felt short, but I did feel that the tempo of the music itself was a little quicker than usual. If I were playing and heard that music, it would have raised my anxiety level a bit.

Re: Help with a Jeopardy-themed marriage proposal

Since the "will" clue might be a bit ambiguous, as pointed out above, how about: In a GEICO commercial, a group of pigeons is urged to "fire at" someone with this first name. Even if she hasn't seen the commercial, she could easily figure out the correct response from the common expression "fire at ...

Erin's guess of Oregon for "Timber' wasn't a bad guess, with the Portland Timbers of MLS (and before that, NASL). :| I so wanted Jonathan to say "Make this a true daily triple, Alex" at the start of DJ. :geek: Military alphabet is one of those lists a J! player should know, along with the President...

Third (pardon my ignorance): what the hell is "Kip" Marlowe? I' know who Marlowe was, read some of his work in college, even came up with "Who was Marlowe?" for this FJ. Is "Kip" some nickname I've just never heard of? Was Marlowe, unbeknownst to us, secretly Kenyan? And what's up with including th...

Re: Alex Trebek Announces Diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer

That certainly is great news. Unfortunately, with pancreatic cancer, Alex still has a long way to go to recovery. Let’s all hope that he’s one of the few who beats the odds. On a related topic, does anyone else believe that Holzhauer’s run is a gift for Alex? He is obviously enjoying the run though ...

Re: Alex Trebek wins Emmy

Since Alex hasn't won an Emmy in over a decade, this award was probably at least partially given based on his current health issues. Of course, he certainly deserved it anyway, but it's still nice to see him get another Emmy. On a related topic, I think it's great that Alex (most likely) gets to fin...

Re: So...what have we learned so far from James Holzhauer?

BTW, it's commendable that the one stratagem he's never used is taking as much time as possible to come up with the wager, so as to run out the clock. With good reason ... why would he want to run out the clock? That just means less money for him. I was thinking that's what his opponents should be ...

Re: So...what have we learned so far from James Holzhauer?

Taping for the season is over. Does the fact that we haven’t heard about James losing, like we did for the Zerg-Jennings game, mean that he ran the rest of the season? Not at all. Did you know about this magnificent run until it was imminent? Actually, I didn’t know about it until he first broke th...

Re: So...what have we learned so far from James Holzhauer?

It just dawned on me that the $250,000 given to the winner of the ToC is a minimum guarantee. It would be fun to see if James can break that on a two day, total point affair. I don't know if James would bet huge on the first day FJ, even if he had a lead typical of his regular games.. A miss on it ...

Got a 45 playing off the video to go with my 47 on Tuesday and 43 on Wednesday (real thing). Went with Rye instead of Barley. Said downhill instead of halfpipe (stupidity on my part). Had no guess on Franzen. Said Regan rather than Cordelia. And finally said FEMA instead of NOAA. The long wait conti...

Took tonight's test off of Sue Herder's recording (Thanks, Sue!). Will probably take tomorrow's to continue my now 34-year attempt to get on the show (Yes, I first took the test back in 1985. Feels like yesterday.) In any event, I scored 47 last night which is better than my typical 41-45 on the tes...

Re: Alex Trebek Announces Diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer

What a week! It was bad enough that Alex had to make this horrible announcement. Then the very next day, this life-long Met fan learned that Tom Seaver (the greatest Met of them all) is suffering from dementia, and has to retire from public life. May God strengthen them both for the upcoming trials...

If they just needed someone for a few weeks to end the season, I wonder if they would ask Pat Sajak?
Sounds like a good interim choice. After all, he already has one game of experience!
