Re: Online Test Discussion (Central), January 18, 2012

I don't suppose they get rid of applications - but some may go in a different drawer... To say everybody's in the pool is generous, and I'm sure their decision-making is generous too - but it's hard to believe they don't reserve the right to move folks out who are sweaty or nervous or monotonous. (...

Re: Online Test Discussion (Central), January 18, 2012

I have two theories on the not-dismissing-anybody issue. Either people generally don't cheat and get similar scores to their online score so it's not an issue, or they identify someone as having likely cheated and don't identify them as such to avoid problems/be kind, but tell them they're in the p...

Re: Online Test Discussion (Central), January 18, 2012

Don't know how much of a factor this will be in terms of what's a passing score, but I assume there's a certain amount of cheating or attempted cheating on the online test. The Wikipedia blackout during this version of the test might have made that harder, or scared those who were planning to cheat...

Re: Online Test Discussion (Pacific), January 19, 2012

Took this one for fun off of someone's YouTube video. To me, it seemed the easiest of the three and I got my highest score of the three nights: 47. Of course, easy with these tests is very subjective. Put Kathy Griffin instead of Tina Fey. I was drawing a blank and wrote Griffin just to have somethi...

Re: Online Test Discussion (Central), January 18, 2012

Anyway, I think I got a 44 Hehe, seems we're in lockstep every year, buddy I've never been below 40, in practice or for real, but after last night, I felt like I was flirting with that threshold. I didn't really think 35 was in view, but I was definitely more discomfited than usual. Many thanks to ...

Re: Online Test Discussion (Central), January 18, 2012

Apologies if these aren't all completely correct...for the record, I got EXACTLY 35 right... Thanks, Some Dude. I got 35 right if "Curies" counts for "Marie and Pierre Curie". The nickel dropped too late for me to type the whole thing. I also cheated myself out of "Leo Trio" by trying to change my ...

Re: Online Test Discussion (Central), January 18, 2012

Thank you, Ricky Gervais! Because I wanted to see some of his hijinks this weekend, I watched some chunks of the The Golden Globes. I hadn't seen either Bridesmaids or Game of Thrones so the panning to Kristen Wiig (who I think is the worst thing to hit SNL ever) made me realize she must have been i...

Re: Online Test Discussion (Central), January 18, 2012

It definitely felt harder to me than last night's, but I was also taking this one for real which probably changes one's subjective impression of difficulty. Feels like I passed, but I definitely want to confirm that when the transcript is posted.

Took this one for practice off the board. Went 45/50 missing Nicholas Sparks (heard of him but the book names didn't ring a bell, Henry Moore (tip-of-the-tongue but it wouldn't come to me), Mediterranean (went with Aegean), Rembrandt and For Whom The Bell Tolls (went with The Son Also Rises). Let's ...

Re: Thursday, December 15, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Congrats to Boomie on 3 great games, and to Beth on winning! That tie game was a lot of fun to watch. As Joon said elsewhere: Boomie you were super suave on screen, and it was fun to watch. Now, to pick apart the wagers again. These expectation values ignore the further winnings that you might get ...

Re: Thursday, December 15, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Would you trust the other player to make the zero bet? I would. It's a 100% chance of $18,600 vs. a much less chance of $37,200. I know which one I am taking every time. If you're going to do an expected value analysis, you might as well do it right. The "much less chance" needs to be quantified. I...

Re: Wednesday, December 14, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

OK, how many others here think that the "St. Ranier's Day" clue was far undervalued at the $400 spot? Myself, I tend to consider the category a wheelhouse, I most likely would have TDD'd the DD, no matter my lead (and got it, 4/5 in the cat), but "St. Ranier" was a complete stand-and-stare. I under...

Re: Wednesday, December 14, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Twilight is so ever present, you don't have to have seen or read any of it to be aware of the basics. They gave you the name Isabella in the clue- Bella being the lead female dishrag of a character. Plus Jacob was like the number one name for several years over the last decade. So even without the ...

Re: Thursday, December 8, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I just did a quick j-archive search, and it seems that Calvert comes up often. I did remember the DD from this game - http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=3564 (speaking of odd FJ! wagers... oh, Molly) where I too had no idea about the Calvert-Baltimore connection. I guess the Calvert-MD c...

Re: Thursday, December 8, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I find it incredible that three J! class players miss this FJ. I thought this was college or even teen level, taught in every American History class. Not in mine; I've only vaguely heard of the Calverts. I just did a quick j-archive search, and it seems that Calvert comes up often. I did re...

Re: Thursday, December 8, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

The risk (gambit) of such a small wager is, of course, that it leaves the leader vulnerable to losing on a double get and a big "irrational" bet from second place. Part of the problem with Tony's bet is that it wasn't big enough to take the lead if William had actually tried "Pawson's Gambit" (anot...

Glad he had a sense of humor about the DD. It was funny he missed that one after talking about his alcohol blog. Can someone who knows him encourage him to drop by here? Was his blog buddy Sam at the viwing party? Tony certainly did have a good sense of humor about the situation. Yes, his buddy Sam...

Re: Wednesday, December 7, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

Do I recognize Tony from some trivia-related thing? If not, does he remind me of someone? I couldn't shake this feeling that I recognized him the whole show. As mentioned above, Tony runs a couple of weekly trivia games in NY. One of them happens to be on Wednesday night, so he moved last night's s...

Re: 12/7/2005 game on GSN today

All of those Season 22 games are craaaaazy hard. Just ask Rex Kramer, a.k.a. Bill McDonald, or read his posting about it on another thread on this board. You know it was a tough season when a three-time winner, Vik Vaz, made it to the TOC. Granted he did make it to the finals, but still, the dearth...

Re: Million DOllar Mind Game 11/27

A team this good might have nailed such a question, but they also might not have. If they continued, they would each be risking $100K to get another $67K. To me, the risk/reward of the situation strongly suggests that they made the right decision here. But they would have only had to get one of the...
