Re: Monday, February 22, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Too many Chicago based medical shows...I correctly ruled out ER and decided to try my luck with Hope. The clues in that category that were present tense are still on the air, ones that aren't were past tense. The Chicago clue was present tense, so as far as I know there was only one choice. Or at l...

I never watched House and didn't know those details, but I knew the premise was that he was a diagnostician figuring diseases out, so that was enough for the clue...(Though I was lucky to recall the name...I blanked on the more current Good Doctor...) I hesitated a few seconds on FJ, remembering Tap...

I've seen every play in his Century cycle at least once, though I missed the Broadway Jitney. I'd seen a...

Honestly, if you don’t know the specific name of a poem there’s no reason to buzz in. You’re not going to figure it out if you don’t know it. I thought it was consistent but very strict to not take spark for sparks. but there are sports teams with singular names and those with plural names and them...

Sure, got Samuel Barber...if only it had been the FJ! I was not in sync with the FJ writers much this week...I'm interested to know if posters were aware of the law change (the kind of thing that would be great slipped into the Current Events thread, even if it got lost among the tombstones.....

I managed to confuse William Jennings Bryan with William Jennings Bryan. I thought I remembered him as the gold standard guy, but then I thought was he was the Scopes Monkey Trial guy? But he couldn't have been both, could he, given the timing? Is the Monkey trial guy a different three-named guy? O...

I just went for the first fish I thought of with a double consonant. I figured it wasn't a herring, but otherwise, the picture didn't do much.MattKnowles wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 10:56 pm

Speaking of cake, what was up with negging Epiphany for the King Cake associated celebration that culminates on Fat Tuesday? That was the correct response--more correct than Mardi Gras, which doesn't culminate on Fat Tuesday. It is Fat Tuesday. I can see a case for accepting Mardi Gras, grudgingly....

Re: Tuesday, February 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Honestly, I thought the date alone -- the Taj Mahal is from the mid 1600's -- should be enough to exclude it. To me, that's what made it plausible. I imagined a scenario where the Brits conquered that region, discovered the building, and tried to figure out what to name it. But then again, the Taj ...

For the clue in the "AU" category: "One painter artistically applied fine strokes to the canvas; another used these unskilled strokes" I said "Fauvist" instead of daubs. I feel like "wild beast" strokes is passable for "unskilled" strokes. Judges? ------------ They didn't have any sports categories...

From the OED definition for bang - 1.b. A drubbing, defeat. Obsolete. rare. 1644 Sir G. Radcliffe in T. Carte Collect. (1735) 329 After a shrewd bang Prince Rupert is recruiting gallantly. Continuing to go through the episodes of The Crown - not exactly binging - I was struck by how much in the LBJ episode called "Margaretology," even more than the one with JFK, led to the correct response here. Just blanked on Diogenes' name, as well as the capital of Croatia. I needed more time to get to hippo (but only because it made sense as "large amphibious mammal"). I often mix up rhino and hippo...but I don't mix up Thoreau with Emerson.

It's the symbol for an unstressed vowel, such as the middle one in the word "je-pər-dē" This is just wrong. Lots of unstressed vowels are not schwas -- for instance, the last vowel of that very word they used as an example. Secondary stress. :P Take the comma out of the clue and it's giving an exam...
