Re: Tuesday, February 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Speaking of cake, what was up with negging Epiphany for the King Cake associated celebration that culminates on Fat Tuesday? That was the correct response--more correct than Mardi Gras, which doesn't culminate on Fat Tuesday. It is Fat Tuesday. I can see a case for accepting Mardi Gras, grudgingly....

Re: Tuesday, February 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Honestly, I thought the date alone -- the Taj Mahal is from the mid 1600's -- should be enough to exclude it. To me, that's what made it plausible. I imagined a scenario where the Brits conquered that region, discovered the building, and tried to figure out what to name it. But then again, the Taj ...

For the clue in the "AU" category: "One painter artistically applied fine strokes to the canvas; another used these unskilled strokes" I said "Fauvist" instead of daubs. I feel like "wild beast" strokes is passable for "unskilled" strokes. Judges? ------------ They didn't have any sports categories...

From the OED definition for bang - 1.b. A drubbing, defeat. Obsolete. rare. 1644 Sir G. Radcliffe in T. Carte Collect. (1735) 329 After a shrewd bang Prince Rupert is recruiting gallantly. I'm not sure I buy this as the reason they allowed it, but there it is... Yeah, I'd say they have to allow it ...

Continuing to go through the episodes of The Crown - not exactly binging - I was struck by how much in the LBJ episode called "Margaretology," even more than the one with JFK, led to the correct response here. Spoilers for The Crown- First, the Brits express scorn for the idea that LBJ was sick for ...

Just blanked on Diogenes' name, as well as the capital of Croatia. I needed more time to get to hippo (but only because it made sense as "large amphibious mammal"). I often mix up rhino and hippo...but I don't mix up Thoreau with Emerson.

It's the symbol for an unstressed vowel, such as the middle one in the word "je-pər-dē" This is just wrong. Lots of unstressed vowels are not schwas -- for instance, the last vowel of that very word they used as an example. Secondary stress. :P Take the comma out of the clue and it's giving an exam...

I was pretty sure I knew who FJ was referring to - not sure I had a good reason except wandering through town looking for an honest man seems a little nutty - but I could not remember his name... Archimedes shouting EUREKA in the bathtub seemed a good second choice, so that's who I ended up w...

Re: Thursday, February 11, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The writers did me a HUGE favor in FJ! by abbreviating the Oscar category that was won. The full name of the Oscar category is "Best Live Action Short Subject, Two-Reel", and the movie that won was Siam, a documentary. I figured two reels meant it had to be pretty short - but a reel is apparently a...

I seem to be the only one whose 50/50/90 led to London based on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Mental coin toss, but I didn't remember the second murder in C&P, and knew Mr. Hyde attacked at least two people. Turned out Stevenson was 20 years too late, and Hyde's only killing was of a man. Gotta get some...

Pritchett's Closets & Blinds = Modern Family seemed like an awfully deep cut for the top box. Emmy winning comedy series five years in a row, and nominated the next three years. Ran triple-named authors. Unsuccessfully pre-called Edgar Allan Poe and William Makepeace Thackeray. How'd everybody do on Ralph Waldo Emerson? Anyone fall for the negbait-ish Henry David Thoreau? It was pretty nasty bait since Thoreau is also from Concord and wrote a very famous essay. But J! uses...

We had a similar discussion last time there was a "3-named" category...Is Clark enough for Mary Higgins Clark ? What complicates this is that her daughter Carol H.C. is also an author...I accepted it since I at least had more than Jared, but i couldn't remember her first name...Perhaps more objectiv...

I, too, don't like this week's readers, simply because they're non-professionals. Shows how much you have to work at being a good reader, and makes me appreciate Ken (and Alex) a little more. As I've said before, it takes a certain kind of talent to read a clue so that you're actually helping, and ...
