Re: Monday, February 1, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

NHO "plank" in the political context. Poll request? "Planks" are what " platforms " are built of! I pre-called FJ too - and was right! I wavered a little about Niagara Falls (TR was, after all, a New Yorker!) , but since that's so associated with Canada, I figured it just had to be the Grand Canyon.

I had a brain-fart on Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius author. I sat there staring at the question going, "OMG, you know, whats his name? I can't think of it?!" I was trying to remember the name of
Spoiler

Rommel wasn't a terrible guess. Germany and Great Britain (despite some cousinly Naval rivalry) certainly weren't at war in 1909!

The 17-18 year old Rommel could easily have gotten some of his education in England.

Re: Friday, July 17, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

That's a close call but I'm thinking not. Here's the technical distinction. Both dramatic monologue and soliloquy involve only one speaker. But in a dramatic monologue that speaker is speaking to someone. In a soliloquy the speaker is alone. Monologue = Character talking or delivering a lengthy spe...

I've only ever heard her referred to as Margaret Court. No idea about the Smith part.

And hey, what's Andorra then, chopped liver? (Iberian Peninsula clue)

Even if you don't know, you can figure it out because Delaware is the right size, shape, and position to simulate a pocket square in a man's jacket. Still not seeing it. Who's to say that RI or MA aren't if you have to fudge it that badly? Or NJ? RI & MA aren't Mid-Atlantic states though; they are ...

Re: Tuesday, May 19, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Alex butchered the pronounciation of Hereford. I've heard it as three syllables all my life. When I was growing up in Texas, my family raised them, and I've never heard a 3-syllable pronunciation of that word in my life. I can't even imagine how you WOULD make that into three: her-ee ford?, here-uh...

Re: Wednesday, May 20, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

OK, about "Pebble": You know, in early Flintstones episodes, Wilma's maiden name was indeed "Pebble!" In later episodes, after they introduced her mother as Pearl Slaghoople, her maiden name seemed to change to Slaghoople. Major continuity error there, Hanna-Barbera. The contestant (I forget which o...

Now....since my last call for an audition (2008! 7 years ago!), I've lost 90 lb., gotten a decent haircut, and had my teeth fixed.
Time for another chance to be telegenic? :P

Missed Outlander, Android (brain fart!), Buster Keaton, Matisse, & Estonia (Tallinn! Not Sofia, and not Riga.) Misspelled "Medal" as "Medeal" of Honor & noticed too late to edit. And I gave Alanis credit for proper spelling/grammar & said "Ought To" rather than "Oughta." Hope they take "graphic" sin...

TenPoundHammer » Wed Mar 12, 2014 6:28 pm 4/5 in "Rhyme Trebek". What the heck was $1000 talking about? Tanker on the rocks = wreck? Don't get it. Did anyone get that hippopotamus clue? Yes. I couldn't for the life of me think of a single book with "Catch" in the title. Well, I would like to forget the The Catcher in the Rye exists (hated it! and Salinger in general!) Still instaget for me  I was amused at "WaterSTON" - I remember a ...

Nitch, nish or neesh? Now that I'm aware of Arthur's tendency to mispronounce words, I was catching them all over tonight! Nish for nitch, GROW-man's for GRAW-man's...OK, they're consistent with the spelling even though I think it makes him sound kind of, well, ignorant! But how the heck did they n...

Connecticut also has a village called Versailles, which I have heard pronounced as either \ver-SELL-us\ or \ver-SAYLZ\, and a town called Berlin, pronounced \BER-lin\.
My state (Pennsylvania) has a North Versailles, always pronounced ver-SAYLZ.

Re: Wednesday, February 26, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Add a bungled pronunciation of philately (reducing the word from 4 syllables to 3), and I think Arthur showed some real vulnerability tonight. But "fɘ - LATE -lee" is absolutely consistent with the spelling, which is the rule. I think Arthur's strategy of phonetically sounding out words that may be...

Thanks for the quick transcript, Ear! Assuming the island is actually Reunion rather than Christmas (or Mafia!), I got 44.

Now I'm just gonna sit here by my "rear window" (computer!) and watch people while my broken leg heals!
