Re: Thursday, February 18, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

So Andy gets a grand total of $2,999? That seems wrong somehow. IMHO, if someone wins a game with under $2k, they should bump it up to $3k, or at least $2,500. Theoretically, one could have a longer winning streak than Ken Jennings and walk away with all of $1,075 to show for it. Them's the rules! ...

Remember—
William Jennings BryaN: politiciaN
William Cullen BryanT: poeT

Ever since I noticed that, I've never had to worry whether I was saying one's last name for the other.

Re: Wednesday, February 17, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

If I had about 50 guesses, I may have gotten this. But probably not. I had no idea that "figure" went away. I paused after time ran out and thought about figure skating - I knew they don't do compulsories now, but I hadn't noticed that it isn't still called that. I think these posts indicate a misu...

Re: Tuesday, February 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't know what your background is, but I am a Ph.D. chemist and talking about iron as an ore is what sounds ridiculous to me. Would be interested to see a poll question on this... You don't need a Ph.D. to recognize that when a clue explicitly asks for an ore and a contestant says "iron," their ...

Re: Tuesday, February 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

If a clue said "this Kennedy patriarch," "Who is Joseph?" would be unacceptable because Joseph without a last name is a Biblical figure. That's different because Joseph is a Kennedy. Iron is not an ore. Joseph is not a Kennedy; Joseph Kennedy is a Kennedy. See how ridiculous that sounds? I don't kn...

Re: Tuesday, February 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Comment on Yukon $200: iron is not an ore, it's a metal. If you asked someone, "What ore is this?" and they answered, "Iron," would this be your response? That's basically the exchange between clue and contestant here (with more words involved and answer and question in the other order). Yes, becau...

Re: Monday, February 15, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It was sooooo painful to watch Karen wave the white flag with her DD3 wager. That timidity potentially cost her the game, as, ceterus paribus, she would have gone into FJ! in second place rather than third. She withheld $2,000 in her wager and was $2,300 behind Phil entering FJ. She ultimately didn...

I don't recall Larry Martin's death being acknowledged on the show before the ToC, so I'm not sure we should expect the same for Brayden.

Something that crossed my mind today: it's wild that Trump's presidency was bookended by victories in which less than half the votes went his way.

I had Moscow on Monday. On the mall clue my mind was certainly in Minnesota but I wasn't willing to guess. I got Emerson.

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

Jay’s player page for his regular games doesn’t link to his TOC and UTOC games. I think I fixed it. Looks good to me. (The player pages are sort of a "before, during, and after," with the "during" being the stint of games linking to the page you're on. So Jay had three stints, with his initial appe...

It's the symbol for an unstressed vowel, such as the middle one in the word "je-pər-dē"
This is just wrong. Lots of unstressed vowels are not schwas -- for instance, the last vowel of that very word they used as an example.
Secondary stress. :P
