Re: SHC Round 1 Instant Replay Thread [SPOILERS]

DoT, Britannica Online says that estragon is another name for tarragon. Would it be ruled correct then? http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/583687/tarragon When I read your answers, even before I read your posts on the matter, I thought Aragon estragon should be accepted. You've got the facts...

Re: SHC Round 1 Instant Replay Thread [SPOILERS]

Cape Verde is a tough neg on the 10-pointer. I luckily talked myself out of it, thinking Cape Verdean would be the only official language (wrong, but in a helpful way), and being (rightly) attracted by the "two islands" TOM to a place with two names. ("São" was the final convincing factor, assuring ...

Right, that's what I'm referring to. Zhivago starts with a ?, not ?. If zh were the only way to produce the ? in English, zh would show up naturally in our language (rather than just in transliterations). But we've got words like decision and azure (not to mention the letter J, which produces an af...

Re: Ideal changes for Season 28

Another point about when they'd increase the values: Unlike before when they raised them when there was no returning champion, now with sky's the limit they'd most likely (unless they decide to raise the values right after an applicable rare event happening) have a champion fall under both the old ...

  :(   :( :( Wild guessed George I for Wednesday's, but now that I reflect on it, it's becoming clear to me that he didn't come that long before George III. Basically I was stuck knowing that there was a King James in 1607, and that George III reigned du...

Re: Friday, July 29, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think I would have steered clear of the Hollywood sign, because first, I wouldn't consider it a structure (at best it's nine structures); and second, I imagine a memorial near the Hollywood sign would have to be comparably visible from afar, and I know there's nothing but hillside and flora aroun...

Re: Ideal changes for Season 28

It should be a multiple of 5 the pre-11/26/01 scores, and 400/800/1200/1600/2000 is confusing enough. It should be 250/500/750/1000/1250 for J! or 500/1000/1500/2000/2500 for DJ!, or what I put in for DJ! should be the J! Round, and 1000/2000/3000/4000/5000 for DJ!. 2.5 is not a multiple of 5. And ...

Re: New season tapings delayed

I seem to recall that participants in the Watson tuneup matches liked the job Todd Crain did. Perhaps some of the sparring partners could chime in? He was a good host for someone working with almost zero audience, but he's no Alex at reading the clues. But it's not like I was wishing Alex were ther...

Re: Ideal changes for Season 28

. And there's certainly no need for things like the Teacher's Tournament. Especially when it's tainted by a bogus ruling, which taints the next TOC as well. There is not a one-to-one correspondence between the English Z and the Russian letter shaped like a 3. (Assuming that's what you refer to.) Co...

Re: Friday, July 29, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think I would have figured this FJ out on my own. My dad and I started brainstorming L.A. landmarks when it went to commercial, and the Griffith Observatory, the Watts Towers, and the Capitol Records building came up. (The Hollywood sign didn't.) When the clue was revealed, I was still parsing it ...

Re: Season 28 premiere??

I really wonder if there is a tape delay, whoever wins tomorrow night could do what Priscilla Ball did after her January 16, 2009 win, after realizing (s)he can't stay in the Culver City area much beyond Tuesday because of prior commitments. I really hope not. Stefan, if there is the delay and this...

For some reason, my follow-up post did not make it into the thread. It went something like this: I stand corrected on the "just deserts" issue. I always appreciate learning something new! Yes it did make it into the thread! Not a typo. D-E-S-E-R-T-S is the correct spelling and "dee-ZERTS" the corre...

My instinctive answer would have been "la pêche miraculeuse" which I would have written as down as "miracle fishing".

Would it have been accepted, I wonder?
I think that refers to a different miracle, so no.
