Re: 2011 Tournament of Champions Thread

QF #1: Tom Nissley (Gold) vs. Jay Rhee (Silver) vs. Charles Temple (Silver) I don't think it will take long to see if Charles is in over his head in the TOC. His draw of Tom and Jay is a tough one. The path Charles took to get here through the teacher's tournament may not compare to the regular path...

Re: Tuesday, November 1, 2011 Game Recap & Discuss (SPOILERS

I knew someone would bite on Swiss Family Robinson . If I had played the clue in a lock situation with little wagered then my response would have been Raiders vs. Jets. At home it took little time to write five letters. Pippi = Swedish and Heidi = Swiss would have been helpful for Evan to recall. He...

Re: TD 141: From Cradle to Grave

I remembered L-O-G-O-R-R-H-E-A from the movie Spellbound . I'm curious, did you suspect something was going on when an answer you knew to be accurate just happened to be used by me in the set up? I knew it'd be a tough question, so I wanted to throw y'all some bones (after asking about bones). I ha...

Re: Monday, October 31, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILE

I don't recall the clue. What body part was mentioned? Legs = Grable, hair = hayworth. And no kidding re: "4x." Neither, actually, if memory serves, but "WWII Pinup Girl" is Pavlovian for Betty Grable. She was the most popular pinup poster of the era. "Now see here, Scarlett, I got you kisse...

Re: TD 141: From Cradle to Grave

I remembered L-O-G-O-R-R-H-E-A from the movie Spellbound . My guess on javelin was from an Atari 2600 decathlon game. A frisbee throw at 45 ft.? That's less than 2 houses. I work with preschoolers who can top that. For this city slicker the moons were unknown. I could have guessed Hunter's Moon base...

Re: Monday, October 31, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILE

The trick or treaters were kind with the doorbell only ringing twice during the show and both times it was during a commercial or during the interviews. Since the show ended the doorbell has already rung three (make it eight now) times in the following 30 minutes. Sunny was looking quite comfortable...

Re: Friday, October 28, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILE

Usually when I go 5/5 on the FJ clues for the week it seems like 35% of the voters joining me. Based on the comments last night and the early comments tonight perhaps I won't have as much company? I read the clue and wrote Macintosh. Done. Not quite though. With nothing better to do during think tim...

Re: Thursday, October 27, 2011 Game Recap & Disc (SPOILERS)

There is a fragment here that will have problems on any kind of Music FJ clue and another section that can get tripped up on any kind of Movies FJ clue. Those that miss clues in those categories can handle the tough Geography or Word/Phrase Origin clues in a snap where the movie/music type viewers c...

Re: Wednesday, October 26, 2011 Game Recap & Disc (SPOILERS)

I'm in Paucle-ville for solving the FJ clue. I also have to admit to knowing nothing of the facts in the clue and even Alex's pre-reveal remarks did nothing for me. It's embarrassing that death year, Princeton, heart attack, and Hollywood all rang no bells. My guess was Fitzgerald for this reasoning...

Re: Tuesday, October 25, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion(Spoile

Wow, excuse what I posted yesterday about Balaji having an easier time tonight. He was outclassed handily by the challenger duo of Gabor and Jennifer. It continued all the way through FJ with a 2 of 3 solve. The FJ category of Classic Games was one that did not have me bothering with a precall. I fe...

Re: Monday, October 24, 2011 Game Recap and Discussion(Spoil

The rounds were 13 and 25 for me, so I agree with the second round being better. It played much better for the contestants as well. Paucle's TD game caught a break with nothing spoiled for Olympic records. I collected all five in that category as well as the sweep in Magic. Magic could have been mad...

Re: 2010-11 Tournament of Champions Standings (spoilers)

I was checking the site for "Look at This (expletive) Jeopardy Contestant" and saw a post by a familiar name. I clicked that name and found a site with a photo after scrolling down a bit.

I don't feel the photo is a spoiler, but it could be interpreted as one potentially.

$2000: "Shaka Khan" for "Shaka"? Not only wrong, but the kind of wrong that people would remember and laugh at for years. Easy way to ramp up the FJ difficulty: begin it with "In an 1883 work by this author, the title character..." I don't know about years, but certainly seconds after I read it. Yo...

Re: Thursday, October 20, 2011 Game Recap & Disc (SPOILERS)

In 1978 he replaced his brothers at No. 1 ... That was enough for me. I'm with Paucle in the insta- category. The match was even with all three players getting their fair share of clues. Kiss of the Spider Woman looked like torture as the players could not dredge up the title in time. A wise guy co...

Re: Wednesday, October 19, 2011 Game Recap & Disc (SPOILERS)

I got half of FJ right by just flailing at a guess. With five seconds left I wanted to have something on the paper and wrote United Front. All I could do was laugh at Lloyd's response being correct. Word & phrase type things get me multiple times every season. The game was Jekyll & Hyde for me with ...
