Re: Reretaken Down

The "Heart Of Glass" clue reminded that Miley Cyrus did a cover version. It's worth a listen for those who are able to stomach a remaking of a classic. Some cannot under any circumstances. Speaking of Blondie songs and covers, some of you may not know that "The Tide Is High" is a remake. The origin...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I'll admit the two parenthetical statements gave me pause, but not enough that I was willing to not just go with the major river that flows through Vienna. I figured if it was something else I wasn't going to get it, anyway. Exactly. Initially I thought: Europe, pre-WWI....maybe something to do wit...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Before I got to the 'two streets meet' part, I thought the question was going to be about Hopper's painting "Chop Suey". That would have been a happy change of pace from all the Nighthawks questions. Yeah, you'd think "Nighthawks" was the only thing Hopper ever painted. Did you know Hopper did clow...

Looks like a few of us went with "Treatise" instead of "Essay." I also went with that one for my fifth money Q.
A few of us +1, on both parts.

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Luise Rainer was an answer to this question (76.15.1): FILM - Meryl Streep has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress 17 times (including for 2017's The Post) and has won the award twice. Name any one of the five actresses who have been nominated for that award exactly two times and wo...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I guess I have to call that an easy week, since I only missed 3 questions. And I should have gotten 2 of them. Be afraid of next week. It seems like the difficulty level between match days has been all over the map this season. I only missed two questions this week and still went 1-0-4 (4 ties). #A...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Late last night my wife was watching an episode of Grantchester. She puts it on pause and asks me whether I'm familiar with this book.

Well.... at that moment I was extraordinarily familiar with it, but earlier in the day, not at all.

PBS had a Nature show recently about wildlife in the Alps, which prominently featured the ibex, else I wouldn't have had anything. Knew of the Miami Hurricanes, but not the mascot.

Maybe I'm showing my age, but animal, vegetable or mineral was a given, regardless of knowing G&S.

No clue on township and I guessed shantytown. I thought I had no idea on cube and was surprised to see my guess of hexahedron was correct. I still don't know what the game is, but in trying to follow the description of what was listed got lucky as I also considered heptahedron. It's a typical set o...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Greetings from within the Gadsden Purchase! OK, raise your paw if you know that March 3rd is "What If Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day." It's also the birthday of my first set of kitties, in 1982. I have a sneaking suspicion that Thorsten chose the March 3rd match to post the thumbs question. ...

I guessed chalk for the art question. I had no idea, but thought that might fit the "Street Story ___" part. What art medium might you use to create a street story?
Same reasoning here.

Pretty lost on devanagari. System, eh? How about "card counting"!?!?

Re: Poll on Boardies Covid-19 Impact

Changed my vote from not had it to have it. I have no energy and have barely eaten since Thursday. I don’t think I ate at all Sunday. My wife tested positive and got an IV treatment today. I got a test yesterday and will have results tomorrow. I get dizzy if I get up to walk around. Hope you both r...

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A_3jcDKUBtQ The funny thing is that this discussion began with My Mother the Car, but we never tied this back to it. Thanks, Randy, you da man! Wasn't it Santayana who said "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to ask fellow JBoard members about it"?

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

If you had paid close attention to the Learned League "Film Noir" 1DS from a few years ago, you might have come up with at least a guess of Veronica Lake/Lake Veronica for MD1/Q5. On that note, "Neo-Noir" -- i.e., film-noir from the 1960s on -- is coming up in May*. ---------------------------------...

Well, blast, thought I'd get a win with five correct in the '60s ML yesterday, but lost 9(6)-8(5). I missed "Bye Bye Birdie." Figured "seed" was a hint, but never thought of it. Five people got all six right in my group, so it could be a tough one. Apparently, I embed hints into my questions withou...

Looks like I've been moved from C Prairie to B Serengeti. HallJ and HasanA I will assume are J! champs Jared Hall and Ali Hasan? That could be partially my fault. Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I felt pretty good about the School of Rick ML, as I usually do with general knowledge type quizzes. 1. Which soap opera star wished that he had "Jessie's Girl" in 1981? 2. Which founding member of the McCoy's had a hit with "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo", and also recorded Hulk Hogan's theme song "Re...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I felt pretty good about the School of Rick ML, as I usually do with general knowledge type quizzes. However, when you’re in a group with someone who gets 64/66 questions correct, there’s limited opportunity to make the Championship. Curious which two questions they missed? These two: https://learn...
