Re: Friday, November 1, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Speaking of religion, I had "the Exodus" for the "Babylonian Exile" - judges? No way would I have survived a "be more specific"... No BMS needed. That's a clean neg, unfortunately. The Exodus refers to the other end of Israel's history, when they were brought OUT of Egypt and INTO the Promised Land...

Re: Friday, November 1, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I can't stand mushrooms - they taste like metal to me. And yet 4/5 right in that category - sorry cremini. Go figure. I started typing in seventh day adv...and then backspaced when I saw the end of the clue. Seventh day echoed to me "and on the seventh day, god rested", which in the Old Testament wo...

Re: Thursday, October 31, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Since it hasn't been mentioned thus far in the thread, I must be the only one that had never heard of a "bath bomb". You aren't. ... and that coming from the HBomb himself! Me neither, BTW. I'm pretty sure my out-loud answer was "bath salt-bomb". I think the phrase "epsom salt" plus "tub" made me s...

Re: Thursday, October 31, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Mentioned earlier, but in the clue "Hydrogen bonds hold together the strands of this molecular structure discovered in 1953", I really expected her to get her money back at the break. Looking it up, it was the structure that was discovered in 1953; DNA was discovered much earlier. I guess if they h...

Re: Thursday, October 31, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Thought process - Steinbeck and that Dust Bowl book. Nope, (way) too early. I figured JS for pre-war, so who is a favorite post-war writer? Hemingway, don't know which book, but don't have to. Why no other Hemingways here so far? I didn't know that "sounds like so-and-so" was a valid pathway to an ...

Re: Thursday, October 31, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For this week the 5-a-day schedule was still in effect? When it changes to 3 one day and 2 the next day then that can change things like the lunch break factor, stamina, etc. Has the taping schedule changed to separate days of 3 and 2 episodes? Per the "Alex Trebek announces pancreatic cancer" thre...

Re: Thursday, October 31, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Imagine how many collective remotes would have been thrown at the TV screen had FJ! asked for the novel instead of the author - including mine. Yup, I had "Grapes of Wrath" in mind too. Mid-1900s (probably California) valley ----> Steinbeck --> write it down, don't think about it. Is there such a th...

Re: Tuesday, October 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Even worse was the $2000 clue in Elemental Etymology. It's a bottom-row clue in DJ!, they give us both the Gaul and the gallus entry points, and they still felt the need to give the element's symbol?! Come the heck on. I was a chemistry major, and I goofed on that one, calling it Gall-in-ium. Hones...

Re: J-archive spoilers

I definitely wouldn't want to wait the next day for the archival info to be put up. While I might make brief notes while watching the game of clues I'd I find interesting to discuss in the forum, it's very helpful to be able to refer to the archive when discussing certain clues. So, if it's a choice...

Re: J-archive spoilers

Why not just not visit the Archive until watching that day's game? Agreed. This doesn't seem like a huge issue. Why would you go to the j-archive page for a day's game you didn't want to be spoiled on? It just doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe people are on mobile devices at lunch and don't have ...

Re: J-archive spoilers

Maybe modify the "Recent FJ!" on the Archive's front page not to show a same-day FJ! until the airings across the country are complete? Let me say that I love the J! Archive, and appreciate all the work that goes into it....thanks to all who provide this invaluable resource. I'd agree that perhaps ...

Re: Wednesday, October 30, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

College Towns for $600 was MASSIVE HONKING NEGBAIT for Salt Lake City. I couldn't shift gears after being completely floored by that. I could have taken 400 guesses on Thinkers for $400 and never gotten to "illness". What even was the TOM there? Even more, I got the next three with ease. I agree wi...

Re: Watching Online

I'm no lawyer, but it seems to me that rampant sharing of J! episodes online would devalue them when trying to sell them in syndication to, say, GSN. Granted, even the J! Archive can devalue that a little bit - if people want to bone up on old J! questions, it's much easier to use the archive than i...

Re: Tuesday, October 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I never came close to focusing on the phrase "objects of attention" - I got bogged down trying to extract meaning from the dog and the dancer, which as I've said, I didn't remember. Fascinating that the phrase itself, rather than familiarity with the movie, seems to have helped people... One thing ...

Re: Tuesday, October 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I went on a very, very brief Hitchcock jag about 3-4 years ago...by which I mean that I finally got around to seeing Rear Window and Vertigo. For some reason, I typed out Vertigo, and clicked my DVR's "+30 second/-10 second" buttons to get to the answer, but while Maltese Falcon showed up as a wrong...

Re: Monday, October 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My main beef with the pumpkin/jack-o-lantern question is...from a pedagogical standpoint, what knowledge are you testing for? Is it the distinction between a pumpkin and a jack-o-lantern? Is it that jack-o-lanterns are hollowed out gourds, while pumpkins are not necessarily hollowed out? I'd write i...

Re: Monday, October 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Yup, I'm on the "pumpkin" train, as well. When I saw that clue, I was waiting for the correction to come in at the commercial break, and...nothing. It was asking for the name of "this Halloween gourd", not necessarily a "carved gourd", which would have been a better clue for "jack-o-lantern". I'm ch...

Re: FJs for the 10/21/19 week

I've seen Latinx before but assumed it was a product for keeping Romans off my windshield. I'm presuming it's supposed to be pronounced "Latin-x" but I'm sort of a fan of "la-tinks." I don't think I'd ever heard pronounced before, so I always read it to myself as "lat-inks". Merriam-Webster says \l...
