Re: Monday, November 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Any three-time champ on this show deserves respect, but you have to admit, it takes a special kind of talent to blow that FJ. Only Elise can confirm it, but in the past I have seen contestant comments that in such a situation they recognize that on an "easy" FJ! clue their only hope was that it was...

I was pretty sure that Lot's wife is never named.

I've seen the film version of OFOTCN.

Re: LL83: Learned League

for the heavy water question: did anyone else specifically not put heavy because of the word heavier in the question. Even with the bad music/film question, this took away my win and gave me a tie :( Yup. I knew it was heavy, but then kept thinking it couldn't be since heavier was in the question. ...

Re: Monday, November 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got FJ immediately off "City of Light." When I flew through Buffalo's airport to visit Niagara Falls this past Labor Day weekend, I did a little research on Buffalo and learned that it had acquired that moniker due to being the first U.S. city with widespread electric lighting (which was powered b...

Re: It's happening!!! The GOAT Tourney, w/ Brad + Ken + James

I thought you were referring to contestant eligibility in normal games. The eligibility says you cannot be a contestant if you were on a Trebek show. If there is a new host, I imagine they would keep the Trebek exclusion. Why? I would think the opposite -- that it once again opens it up to any Treb...

Re: It's happening!!! The GOAT Tourney, w/ Brad + Ken + James

By the way, I was in the audience for the game that airs tonight (which taped Sept 18). Alex made no mention of this GOAT event at the time. Makes me think that the plan has come together only in the last few weeks. This is the type of thing for one would expect TPTB to dub an Alex announcement int...

Re: It's happening!!! The GOAT Tourney, w/ Brad + Ken + James

I am a little surprised they didn't try to expand the field and make it a Super Jeopardy! type tournament. They just had one of those last season, and they only do them once every several years. (Prior to the All Stars competition, the previous super-tourney was the Battle of the Decades in 2014). ...

Re: Friday, November 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This was a coronation, and cements James's legacy and fortifies his claim to GOAT status. Emma is a phenomenal player who really put up a tremendous fight and just refused to quit or get rattled; and at age 27, her best J! days (in future supertourneys) may still be ahead of her. Defeating her, and ...

Re: LL83: Learned League

On the Captain Kangaroo question, I was shocked at Good Morning America being the MCWA, and that therefore over 1 in 10 LLamas thought GMA went off the air in 1984. On the math question - well, I really, really need to learn already to check my work before submitting. I misspelled "pentagon" as "pol...

Re: LL83: Learned League

I am curious how many people who got San Francisco knew the question was about the Federal Reserve and how many just guessed a city in the West. It would have been a better question if the missing city had been Richmond or Cleveland. What's frustrating for me is that just several weeks ago in pub t...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

I've got no problem with Narita at $200, but I do think Schiphol was way over valued at $800. I don't know about "way" overvalued. I don't think "Schiphol" sounds obviously Dutch to the same extent that Narita sounds Japanese. And it's a big hub airport, but it doesn't have quite the same Q-rating ...

Re: Tuesday, November 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

What was the TOM for "Toyko" on the top box? "Narita" sounds like it could be from literally anywhere. No, it doesn't. The fact that you don't recognize linguistic clues doesn't mean that they don't exist. Let's not complicate this with linguistics; the TOM is that Narita is Tokyo's international a...

Outsourcing is taking certain functions out of an organization and hiring an external company to do those jobs. A minority of the time the jobs leave the country, but most outsourced jobs move to a domestic company without leaving the U.S. The actual correct answer to the clue would be "offshoring,...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

It very well could be Beijing. "Sounds Chinese" and "Sounds Japanese" aren't miles apart. Actually, they kind of are. Or it could be in another big country such as Brazil. "Narita" sounds totally plausible as Portuguese to me. Again, sometimes you just have to know things. Brasilia, a capital found...

I always thought of the sun belt being only the southwest, didn't realize it was a lot of the south. That makes more sense than the Bible belt I guess as well, since the Bible belt intersects the sun belt, at least in my mind. There's some overlap, but the Bible Belt basically doesn't extend furthe...

I got an FJ right that James missed! It was only his 2nd incorrect FJ response in 35 games including this TOC. Emma was very strong yesterday . . . and then there was James today. IMO he showed why he's still the clear favorite in the dream rematch in the final round. Even looking a ittle shaky at t...
