Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Should've had my third beer of the season but despite reading many articles about GameStop I could not remember the ticker symbol... It didn't matter as I won 8(5)- 5(4) to end with an improbable promotion to B for next season (needed a forfeit loss from the player in second going into the last day)...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Does anyone know what is controversial about daesh? I didn't know it but figured it was something odd so I put peace....lost on horrid defense yesterday to lose my spot in the promotion zone to B.

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

For the baby-sitting question my first thought was detective, thinking of the "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series, but couldn't believe there could possibly be 100 books in that series since it's written by a single author. Then I remembered the Baby-sitters Club series and that made much more ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I've heard of exactly 3 types of retrievers, golden, lab, and Chesapeake Bay. While it doesn't exactly strike me as icy, there was nothing else to go on for me. I've NHO a Nova Scotia retriever or a toller so that was a new one. I wasn't familiar with Bowie's backing band, and the best I could come ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I tied yesterday 5(4)-5(4) missing Attack and Nighthawks...pretty frustrating when I could see the painting in my head but I could not remember the title of it for the life of me. I also made my first ever BWA/joke answer with On Golden Pond for the manga one as I had absolutely no idea and no hope ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I got 5 right (Bose-Einstein / Cleveland / Kruger / Stalingrad / Angler), but moneyed a wrong guess of "Treatise" for "Essay". I also blew the Leadbelly answer with "Eileen", instead of "Irene". I could hear the lyric, but if I'd backed up to the "Good Night" part, it would have been an instaget. I...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

6 right for me in the Classic (Modern Family, Irene, Cleveland, Kruger, Stalingrad, Angler)...misses include boson for bose and treatise instead of essay. Others I had no clue on. I did manage to get all my moneys and qualify out of C for Magnolia and our 9th place finish. Not bad considering Magnol...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I'm (mildly) surprised Bluegrass only came in at 42%. But Bill Monroe's name was obscure even in the popular heyday around the Deliverance and Bonnie and Clyde movies. I would have guessed it at 80% and Gorilla glue at 50% (instead of 92%). I got tangled in the Serbia/Croatia/Herzegovinia/Macedonia...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

There were definitely more than two female speakers in 2001. There was his daughter on the videophone, one of the stewardesses who asks him about his food, the scientist on the space station, and Frank's mother celebrating his birthday. I think there might have been another on the shuttle to Tycho ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

My opponent lives in England so I figured a question referencing college football mascots wouldn’t be in their wheelhouse. I had no idea there was a sports angle to this question until I browsed the LL forums this morning. I guess I always assumed the Miami mascot was supposed to be a pelican. But ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Thanks for this context (and teapot37's too). I spotted Soweto and my mind said "township" just from osmosis of hearing it over many years. I didn't know it wasn't just another level of urban organization. It helped reduce the drubbing that mahatma gave on me and we were the only two to tease that ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

An improper numeral like CIVIL cannot be converted into a number and cannot have a representation in binary or hexadecimal. Great point, Matt. For my part, I don't know anything about binary or hexidecimal. I just wrote down I, V, X, L, C, D, M on a piece of paper, came to MIX as a roman numeral an...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I also initially thought Gadsden purchase but when I fully re-read the question the timing was wrong but more important was the size. Gadsden is relatively small and the question was asking for something that was about 80% of the Louisiana Purchase so that eliminated Gadsden. I had thought Alaska wa...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I got quilt (as did the 12footboy in our match) and got the previous quilt one as well. My mother in law is a huge quilter so I am familiar with it, and it made sense as something a group of women would create. My MIL goes on quilting retreats a few times a year. Lost in both rundles with a combo of...

ClassicRoadster will be glad to face the rest of us the next 7 games after leading off playing the two ringers :). It was a bit of a rude awakening for sure... Decent start to the season for me other than MD2. Loved the Big Ben question but I didn't get there as I didn't even consider that parliame...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I had my best ever TCA of 91 (previous best was 87), most TMP, and most 3 pointers in a season. I also ended up 12/12 in geography and 13/14 in games sport, which I am pretty happy with. To me, it was an overall easier season as I had way more instagets than I can ever remember, including taking les...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

Man, my defense has absolutely sucked this season. I'm at .596, which would be only my 2nd sub-.600 season (.575 in my rookie season). I have given away 3-pointers on 18 of 23 MDs. Same here. I'm at .609, which would be my worst, after fridays 3(3)-6(3) loss...My worst previous was .628 when I was ...
