Oh, come on. Name me even one other TV show that has an Alex.
Alex Blake - Criminal Minds
Alex Russo - The Wizards of Waverly Place
Alex Trebek - The Wizard of Odds, Classic Concentration, High Rollers, and others
Malcolm. Can’t forget Malcolm!!

Re: Monday, December 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was NOT surprised by the reversal on "light opera". As soon as Alex gave her response, I knew she was right. I went with their expected "operetta" myself. But "light opera" was immediately obvious as a correct alternative. Alex really needs to be more careful with his category announcements when ...

Re: Football pre-emptions

It's not football, and it's not a pre-emption, but more of a...post-emption? J! is moving up from 7:30 to 7 tomorrow (Tuesday) in Boston, due to the "Faneuil Hall Holiday Spectacular" on our CBS station. (Wheel gets moved to the graveyard shift.) It's not the tree lighting in Boston Common, which ha...

Re: Friday, November 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I presume that a first name is always sufficient for a fictional character. If they've made exceptions to this I don't remember them. "Alex from Family Ties" was ruled incorrect on an FJ: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=3959 But TBH, I probably said "Napoli" because of Mike Napoli, fo...

Re: Monday, December 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

You know it's a rough game when even I have a shot at getting a lock game on Lach Trash alone... Ran Special "OP"s. What was the TOM for "knee" in Clicks for $200? That was my only miss. NHO Greta Thunberg, nor do I see why I should. That seemed horribly out of place in the top box. Missy Elliott a...

Re: Monday, December 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

If I'm getting $6800 in Lach Trash (Thunberg, Car Talk, Rockefeller (Campanella, communist block), metronome, oaks, fencing, precinct), you know it's a bad day for the contestants. Also had "Krist Novo-something-Slavic" for the guy in Nirvana who's not Grohl or Kobain. A name I've seen but never hea...

Re: Friday, November 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I said "Napoli" for "Naples" - judges? I'm about 90% sure I would have BMSed to Naples if given the time. It's the Italian name for the city, and it seems to me they'd probably accept "Italia" for "Italy" or the pronunciation "Paree" for "Paris". But TBH, I probably said "Napoli" because of Mike Nap...

Re: Thursday, November 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

A true case of "just write something down and hopes it sticks" in FJ! for me. Avatar....seems sanskritish to me. I always thought of avatars as -A-scending to a higher plane, not -DE-scending, but that just may be from playing Ultima games on my old PC in the 90s. (Truth, love, and courage, anyone?)...

Re: Wednesday, November 27, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I knew "compounding pharmacy" from a recent episode of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight, can't say that I'd ever heard of the term before, or even known the concept existed. Might be a good poll question. I knew it from one of the examples he used - or, at least, I’m pretty sure it was in the episod...

Re: Long-standing Jeopardy Traditions That We haven't seen in a long time

One thing that's not quite true: Jeopardy! hasn't remained exactly the same for its entire run. Besides the doubleing of clue values and mega-champs being allowed, there have been some temporary, one-off changes to tweak the format ever-so-slightly. 1) "BONUS" category. I can't access the database n...

Re: Long-standing Jeopardy Traditions That We haven't seen in a long time

The extended 1980s theme (used for big events like TOC Finals) is one of the all-time great pump-up songs Raw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6rHqrLA7aw In action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_JrNMYP75I They started out using the full intro on every game. Most of the time the music wouldn't ...

Re: Wednesday, November 27, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got fixated on the year 1941 and almost went the Casablanca route, but "Paris" didn't seem like a good one word response. Once I thought of "big one word movie quotes", I headed straight to "Rosebud", although I thought that Citizen Kane was made much earlier. I've seen "The Graduate" - just once,...

20TH CENTURY SATIRE

In a stand-up routine, George Carlin jokingly said that the government told this person, "Well, if you won't kill people, we won't let you beat 'em up."

Re: Tuesday, November 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

They're definitely clipping responses. For the DPI clue, I could see Julie's mouth moving, saying "What is...", but the audio only caught "inch" clearly. Hey, if it gets 61 clues in a game, I'm all for it. This is a sincere question: If they're clipping only the audio, and you can see the mouth mov...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

I can't find exact numbers or verification but it is tease-out-able so this is kind of a "just for fun" trivia question: This division I college football team has been accused of unfairly benefiting from its average player age consistently being much older than other schools. What is BYU? BYU does ...

Re: Tuesday, November 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My brain froze on the FJ! too. I went for "itself", thinking there was some reason they awkwardly included the "two monosyllables" part of the quote instead of paraphrasing it as "two one-syllable words". I scanned the whole "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" phrase for two syllables th...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

I'm not sure I like the wording, but I do like the extra information given in the first spoiler below (the 2nd spoiler is the answer): POPULAR MUSIC A 16th-century Italian clown, a 17th-century Italian astronomer, and an 18th-century fictional Spanish barber are all named in that order in one verse...

Re: Monday, November 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Not seeing how "jeans" would lead a contestant to Uber. Tech companies have a reputation for being aggressively casual. You either play it as a “no tricks” FJ! clue, or search for a hidden meaning. Although I’d think a reply of GOOG or FB would be more aligned with casual attire - but those are obv...
