Re: Monday, November 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Insta get FJ. McKinley lived 8 days after he was shot. Enough time for people to ask, "other than that mr. President, how was your trip to Buffalo?" I think the reason so many people are saying San Francisco is because President Harding died there on his way back from Alaska. But he wasn't shot. I ...

Re: Monday, November 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

So many things could have helped me solve the FJ! question, but I still failed. I literally wrote a FJ! for the thread here a week or two ago that similarly obliquely referenced the McKinley assassination by the year, so that was a gimmie. But I had no clue WHERE it was. I'd seen "The Current War" a...

Re: It's happening!!! The GOAT Tourney, w/ Brad + Ken + James

Wonder why they're rushing it. Who could possibly host this *but* Alex? That's why. Yeah, good point. And I get that it's variable length, but what the point of starting it on a Tuesday? I can't see that it's filmed already and they know the outcome. Monday is probably ABC's strongest night of prog...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

The Japanese came in handy again in Friday's FJ!....E-to-ru-fu, Ha-bo-ma-i, Ku-na-shi-ri, Shi-ko-ta-n. "Shi" is one of those exceptions of Japanese syllables - if you went by how it "should" sound in their alphabet, it would sound like "see", but it's pronounced (and romanzied) as "shi". When Alex p...

Re: Friday, November 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Finally got through this episode - and totally not surprised at the result. James cracked the door open for Emma, but slammed it shut in FJ!. I'm in the "Japan/South Korea" crowd, and Russia in retrospect seems SO obvious. I knew it was geographically close...I just went to the country closest to th...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

I have two clues on the same topic, same category, same response. At first, pick one of the two clues. I think the second is a little harder, but feedback's welcome. ROCK TOURS Clue 1: This artist's latest tour features golden rectangular confetti near the end, perhaps a nod to the artist's 1973 8x ...

Re: Fourth Podium Poll for 11/13/2019 - Wednesday TOC (SPOILERS)

NHO "Girl, do this" and "Girl, do that". I got $200 BESTSELLER from the image alone - all the book info was useless to me. The clue mas as well have been just two words to go with the pic: This person. I had to pause for a second to make sure it wasn't Miley, but I definitely would have gotten there...

Re: Thursday, November 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

At J! speed, I fell for the trap of pacemaker for defibrillator...nevermind that pacemaker is 4 letters too short to qualify, and NOT what the clue was looking for. In "stuff I'd never do on J! but my silly brain thought of": For Hertz, answer "What's the frequency, Kenneth?", and for Oklahoma, do t...

Re: Thursday, November 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Just looking at the stats (show not on yet), assuming that tomorrow's ToC game has all clues, this will be 20 shows in a row (or two weeks of taping days) where we've seen the full complement of 61 clues. Contrast that with the first 30 games, with 88 total missing clues, and only 6 "perfect shows"....

Re: Wednesday, November 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

These boards felt like the easiest of the TOC for me. Good job by all 3 players but the FJ put the game in Francois’s lap. I got there from Torr, too. (Bernoulli was Swiss, BTW). Did anyone else hear Francois say “The Girl on a Train”? I did as well. I was sure Alex would announce a scoring change ...

Re: Wednesday, November 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Did anyone else try "othered" instead of "objectified"? I wonder if that might even have been acceptable. I don't think "othering", be definition, treats people as a thing, or an object. Rather, it treats them as foreign, as part of an out-group, or, by extension, as undesirable. On the other hand,...

was even able to dig the torr out of the deep recesses, but couldn't pull the name in time. That's what got it for me. I started with Tortarelli, realized that was a hockey coach, and then came up with the correct name. I do the "close but no cigar" thing all the time, too...the coach is Tortorella...

Re: Wednesday, November 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It was tough for me NOT to get that the FJ! clue was heading for "the guy who invented the barometer"...but not as tough as it was for me to come up with his name, which I didn't. I'd heard the name Torricelli and the associated unit Torr, but wasn't going to pull it out in time. Wish I'd gone longe...

For a fun linguistic question: How many US states, aside from Hawaii, can be spelled with only the 12 letters Hawaiian alphabet? This is a Millionaire question, and not hard to get. Just start spewing Hawaiian words - think geography and food, and you'll get them. Ohio, Iowa, Oklahoma? Ever see Lil...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

I'm with the "Narita could be Spanish" crowd, since -ita is a common diminuitive femine adjective ending. Like "bebita", meaning "cute little baby girl". But then, if you think of -ita meaning "little", you might walk away from the idea of an airport in a world capital being named "little" something...

Re: Tuesday, November 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For anyone misparsing the FJ! clue, I'd recommend the one technique I've learned painfully from misinterpreting clues myself: look for THIS. Literally, the word "this". I think in almost every FJ!, the correct response replaces the word "this" in some sense...I read it somewhere in here or online so...

$4,600, sort of, including a DD and Amen. If you had a computer in your school in the 80s, you at least heard OF all those older languages - FORTRAN, PASCAL, C, C+, BASIC. We played around with BASIC and LOGO - I still think of programs as having line numbers like when using BASIC on my old Apple //...

no negbait with "can i get a..."? i was going to say amen and changed to witness when i saw the ending of the clue I thought the last word of the Bible being "Amen" was somewhat well known, but apparently not. but they threw in the negbait of "now can i get one?" can i get a witness is a very commo...
