Re: Tuesday, February 19, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I joined dmleach in mistaking Westminster Abbey for St. Paul's. I did exactly the same thing. I must have thought, "There's basically only one super-famous church in London." Not really true. That Shakespeare cat was rough on this English major, but at least from the couch I clammed the o...

Re: Monday, February 18, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Isn't there some fun fact (this is just from memory) along the lines of: Every *elected* president who was a Whig died in office?
So, I'm thinking W.H. Harrison and Z. Taylor were probably the two? They were succeeded by Tyler and Fillmore respectively, who I assume were also Whigs.

I also thought there may have been either an edit, or at least a moment of awkwardness and looking to the judges, or something.

Designer with Spanish name Sounded more like a Portuguese name to me, although I don't actually know that without looking it up. And of course, Portuguese names would be even more evidence that they're going for something in Brazil. I'm sure many people watching at home were like, "You know, t...

Whether or not you can recite all the US Presidents in order, each president's name should sound familiar to you. Whether or not you can recite all the Best Picture Oscar winners in order, all of their titles should sound familiar to you. I would think a serious Jeopardy contestant would want to ai...

I did the Sporcle quiz on world capitals just now to test myself, and I got 132 out of 197 without cheating, which is probably not bad, but also leaves TONS of room for improvement. I guess world capitals are one of those things for a serious trivia person to really brush up on. Whether or not you c...

This was a tough one! Particularly the Double Jeopardy board. Particularly the last two rows of the Double Jeopardy board. Among those 12 clues, I had 2 correct, 1 neg, and 9 clams. My streak of correct FJ responses ends at 11. I wrote "Yalta" just to have something, not expecting it to be...

The reason I knew what "osculation" meant is that I have a math degree, and I once took a course in differential geometry where we talked about the "osculating plane", which is a plane that "kisses" a surface.

Re: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
There was the Crossword Clues "J", immature, 8 letters. Since "jail" was the previous correct response, I blurted out a different 8-letter word which really doesn't mean immature, but does contain the word "jail". Oddly, my first thought was "jejune," but the...

Marlowe made sense to me after the fact, but I didn't come up with it.
I knew he was an almost exact contemporary of Shakespeare. I sometimes get Christopher Marlowe mixed up with Walter Raleigh, but Marlowe is more of a literary person.

Did Colby mention that Pat Quinn's younger brother taught him at one point? That's pretty cool. Seems like he did, yes. Although I was confused for just a moment by that question, thinking of the other Pat(rick) Quinn. Heh, you can tell I'm Canadian, because for me, "Pat Quinn" is this gu...

By the way, as a cat lover, when the category of "Baby" movies was revealed, I was waiting with bated breath, saying "Where's 'Bringing Up Baby'?" I was pleased that it eventually showed up.

Re: Thursday, February 14, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
On FJ I wasn't 100% sure. I thought it might be the MOMA, or part of it, just from the pic, but toyed with it being some early home of the Guggenheim, as well the Building Museum. The 1939 date sold me on MOMA, as that would have been a good date for its first permanent building (it was started in ...

Re: Season 29 Coryats Thread (SPOILERS)
I too had a noticeably worse Coryat score than usual. Lower than any of the ten games during the Teen Tournament, and lower than most of my scores in regular games. This despite the fact that I started strong, getting 13/15 before the first commercial break. I had a higher than usual number of clams...

Some of the other clues in the category had things like "air" or "earth" as a literal *part* of the response, whereas the dam one merely seemed water-themed, as opposed to containing the exact word "water".

Speaking of the presidential acquisitions, I did reasonably well on that one playing along at home, although luck plays a role too. I got Jefferson for the Louisiana Purchase without difficulty. For the Alaska one, I thought of Seward, but I said Lincoln instead of Johnson. I clammed on Hawaii and M...

Re: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
The category of "The Rosetta Stone" was a really hard one to do a precall for. During the commercial break, I thought to myself, "OK, I think the guy's name was Champollion, but they're not going to ask that, it's too obscure. Maybe they'll ask *where* the Rosetta Stone was found? But...
