Also, Vermont is the one that's shaped more like a V (i.e. wider at the top, narrower at the bottom).
EDIT: Jinx! Great minds, and all that.

Re: Tuesday, February 12, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
On Odds for $200, how should I know Ladon is a dragon and not, say, a gryphon, unicorn, manticore, cockatrice, satyr, jackalope, mermaid, chupacabra, gnome, minotaur, centaur, cerberus, leprechaun, faerie, yeti, Michigan Dogman, bat-otter, or any of the other mythical creatures I can think of just ...

Regarding the clue about the Met -- the word "vast" was in the clue. I confess I don't know much about the physical sizes of the most famous NYC museums. Is the Met significantly bigger than the MOMA or the Guggenheim? Was that one way of getting it? (If I'm on the wrong track, never mind.)

Did anyone know the Biblical Quote DD from the Sidney Poitier film? Probably, but not explicitly. All I knew was that "lilies of the field" rang familiar. That's exactly how I got it, and I quite surprised myself. I said "lilies" for no other reason than it just kind of "so...

I'm an assistant math professor. There's a joke people sometimes tell in academia.
"Why are battles in academia so bitter?"
"Because the stakes are so low."

Re: Wednesday, February 6, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I mean maybe skullturf thought it ridiculous that Barret would be the one to restore competence and accountability. Yes, that's basically what I meant. I never interpreted it as a dig at any one particular president, just at politicians in general. But it could be taken as a 17-year-old sounding ha...

Although I indicated earlier that I wasn't Barrett's biggest fan, I don't think his remarks were directed at any particular president or any particular party. After all, Alex was talking about the last thirty years. I agree that it was probably meant partly as a humorous jab at politicians in genera...

Re: Wednesday, February 6, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Someone on the Reddit page linked earlier claims to know Barrett, and claims that he was born partially deaf and is still somewhat hard of hearing, and this is part of the reason for his odd too-loud manner of speaking. Of course, Reddit is anonymous and anybody can claim anything, but this claim se...

By the way, since we all seem to chiming in on whether we loved or hated Barrett: Add me to the "hated" column. Someone else said "unctuous", which is a good word. Smug and slimy are other words that come to mind. Normally, I would hold my tongue. He's just a teenager, after all....

Someone break down that pentagon clue in Number for me ($800)? I still don't get it, and I've written it down. How do you know that those are supposed to be 108 degrees? Anyone? I'm an assistant math professor in my day job, so I had an advantage -- I've previously seen the fact that those angles a...

Because I have the uncanny ability to always pick wrong when presented with only two choices (again — I can never remember which Dakota Mount Rushmore is in). Three or more choices and I'm good. This type of thing happens to a lot of us. I've frequently had a hard time deciding between the followin...

Well, it may be only the teen tournament, and hence not worth bragging about as much, but I had my best-ever start to a Jeopardy! game since I started tracking my Coryats. (In non-teen games, I've twice gotten 14/15 before the first break, but never 15/15.) I got the first 22 clues of the game all c...

I've never read any of the Harry Potter books, and all of their titles sound vaguely familiar to me, but there's no way I could put them in order. I do consider this a gap in my trivia knowledge, and something to be remedied. I *did* make a point, a little while ago, of remembering the titles of the...

I did poorly in "Complete the Book Title", missing the first three. A lot of the correct responses seemed slightly obscure to me, but I know that recent literature is one of my weaknesses, so maybe it's just me.

I got FJ. But there was a mildly annoying 2 or 3 seconds where my brain went something like this: "OK, it's the Headless Horseman, but that's not the title of the story. Ichabod Crane was a character, but that's not the title of the story. Washington Irving was the author, but that's not the ti...
