Re: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Got the Christmas Carol DD partly because the sermon at my church this past Sunday was mostly about that carol. (And I got the written copy of the sermon and had to read along since I was operating the Power Point that day, so I retained more of it than I otherwise would have). That also helped me in another recent episode (I forget whether it was a new episode or a repeat from this time last year) that talked about the meaning of Bethlehem in Arabic being "house of meat" and Hebrew being that (or at least the Hebrew definition) was also mentioned in the same sermon.
Judges: would "universities" be acceptable for the $400 "Patron Saints" clue where "colleges" was given?
(I wonder, by the way, if they'd have to accept "Nigeria" as an answer for the $200 clue? I know I'm enough of an SOB to deliberately answer that for that clue. )
Josh: Sorry to see you lose, you had a great game. Thinking maybe (after a few days of course, not to spoil anything), you might want to have this as your avatar:

Seemed like I got a lot of Lach trash today: sour, saccharine, chandler, Australopithecus, ordain, What Child Is This?, and Puget Sound. Put IBM for FJ.
Very exciting game--all three players, while I'm sure they'd like their do-overs, acquitted themselves nicely. FWIW, I thought Josh was an excellent player and a worthy 2-time champion who also came across as a genuinely nice person (and I think I would have had a similar impression even without reading his posts here).
Retroactive good luck to Alistair tomorrow!

At least Rachel didn't kill herself by going for the $1200 instead of the $400 clue.
Wasn't going to get to "think" for FJ. "Clink, Clank ..." led me away from a rhyme with the first word. All I could come up with was "compute".

Pretty much my situation. "Computer" was my response.econgator wrote:At least Rachel didn't kill herself by going for the $1200 instead of the $400 clue.

Pre-called Ferlinghetti, Kerouac, S Burroughs(though they might want you to prompt a first name), Ginsberg for Beat.
Was completely clueless for the Carol category

From the audience, I was taken in by the alliteration and went for 'compute'. Oh well, at least Ken Jennings isn't the only Jeopardy champion unseated by IBM.Andromus wrote:Pretty much my situation. I also cursed when the 'British Jobs' category came up (born in Britain, moved here in 2000) and then it turned out I didn't get many of them anyway!
Congratulations to Rachel! See if Saidi or I can beat her tomorrow...

Clunk was the first thing that came to mind (largely due to the Grinch , but I dismissed that immediately.lisa0012 wrote:Having no good answer I went for the logical sequence. Clink. Clank. Clunk.

I think the Catholic Church would become quite secularized if it declared a patron saint of golf
My dad did that, too.lisa0012 wrote:Having no good answer I went for the logical sequence. Clink. Clank. Clunk.

I took that left turn at Albuequerque and thought Crick. And then I remembered the category and facepalmed in epic fashion.
I also wondered if they would accept Nigeria. (The things you learn when researching thematic elements for stories.) But I wouldn't have been able to resist giving "What is Ireland?" in a brogue.

Guess I might be in a minority for getting FJ pretty quickly, with Watson being involved with IBM, and "Think" being IBM's motto. However, I wasn't thrilled with it-- just was less thrilled with the alternatives I considered (a couple of which have been offered already).
Plugging in "Think," I finally realized, oh, they're saying the computer is thinking by clinking and clanking.
So, long way around, but got there.

Another clunk here.

That's a very good point that didn't come to my mind...according to Wikipedia, it was Watson's slogan since 1911, when he worked at National Cash Register...so (I assume) well known by 1955. But I have to say my first thought after the reveal of Clink. Clank. Think. was Clink. Clank. Clunk. What a dull cover line... I just went with IBM.Paucle wrote:Guess I might be in a minority for getting FJ pretty quickly, with Watson being involved with IBM, and "Think" being IBM's motto.
