Re: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
No one's saying you have to like it, but I would respectfully agree with the disagreers and say that what has always set Jeopardy apart from most quiz shows is exactly the fact that most of the time you can figure it out based on side knowledge, even if you didn't exactly know the particular fact that's the core of the question. It's what IBM tried so hard to get Watson to do. And there are even some who complain loudly anytime a clue doesn't contain any hints, but is just a know-it-or-you-don't.StrangerCoug wrote:That doesn't change that I didn't like that category. Dropping hints is OK. It's fine to write "This capital city of Germany blah blah blah" and expect the player to get Berlin. Knowing more about Berlin is a nice bonus to the money you get from the clue. But if you're not going to write "This capital city of Germany blah blah blah", "The capital city of Germany" is highly preferable to "The city located at 52° 31' N and 13° 24' E". Don't make it ridiculously arcane. I hadn't heard of most of those places.bpmod wrote:I would respectfully disagree. Jeopardy! is about how well you connect the dots, and how quickly.StrangerCoug wrote:Here's the problem: At least in my case, sometimes the TOM works, sometimes it doesn't. Jeopardy! is supposed to be about how much you know, now about how well you can connect the dots (though I should make clear that I have nothing against the Pavlov lists—they are intended as study guides).

There really weren't many dots to connect. I think you got way too hung up on the part about the malls. Nobody (well almost nobody) is going to be able to tell you where a certain mall is locate. Just ignore the part about the malls and pretend the category was called "Name the state".
$200-You can visit the Pentagon and also Patrick Henry's home in this state
$400-Tour Oak Ridge or take in a show at the Opry in this state.
$600-Visit White Plains or relax along the Finger Lakes on your next trip to this state.
$800-Spend some time in Vancouver in this Pacific coast state.
$1,000-I honestly can't think of a way to reword this clue. But it mentioned neon, which i guess was supposed to lead lead you to Las Vegas and Nevada. I checked and the forum Mall is connected to Caesar's Palace,
Does that make it easier to understand the clues. They do this a lot on the show, a lot of worthless information thrown in and you have to pick out the nugget of information they want. It isn't so much connecting the dots as it is being able to zone in on what they are going for.

That's exactly how I approached the clues. I got 4/5. I missed the last one -- the importance of the word "neon" completely escaped me, and I thought possibly the word "forum" might be related to the L.A. Forum. (I also thought the writers might have tried to sneak in a local reference.)

His wager was better than Irene's. This is not the regular ToC, a solid high score may not get you into the semi. I just checked the last three Teen tournies, and a score of 12,100 (his score going into FJ) would not get you into the semis in any of them. To me, that means bet it all, because on a wrong answer you are most certainly done anyway. Irene's score of 15,000 would have got her into the semi's in two of the last three Teen tournies, and if it where my kid, I'd tell them exactely where they need to be, and they need to be at 16,000 or better, and at 12,000 with what you have to bet to get to 16,000, you might as well go all in.Bamaman wrote: I used to boycott Kids Week and Celbrity games but I became addicted to the old forum and had to watch just to discuss the games.
No Adele today, but we did have Twilight and one about whoever Kanye West is sleeping with.
i also thought of a certain boardie when I saw that category. I got Virginia, but put the Nevada mall in California, thinking the forum was the fabulous one.
Instaget on FJ. I liked Lila's nothing to lose wager, his not so much.
Low score in the last three Teen tournies for the semis

The mall was Neonopolis, which in my opinion does not automatically lead to Vegas. Lots of other cities it could be based solely on that. The hint was the Forum Shops which everybody who has visited Vegas knows about. For the record, it is a part of Caesar's Palace. I've been to Vegas dozens of times and have never heard of the Neonopolis.Bamaman wrote: $1,000-I honestly can't think of a way to reword this clue. I guess in retrospect, this was more of an adult clue, and that's why it was slotted where it was. How many kids know about Vegas?

I parsed Neonopolis as neo-nopolis. So I was first thinking New something, then maybe something in Indianapolis, or Minneapolis, or Annapolis... Neon never occurred to me.

I saw "Neo-nopolis" as well, so between that and the "Forum" reference, I was looking for a state with classical leanings in its history. But I couldn't remember what state Rome was in, and Athens, Georgia never crossed my mind. Turns out I was probably thinking of Rome, Georgia (there are other, smaller Romes in other states), and my blank prevented a neg.

Re: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Well don't forget that someone has to win the game too. From either Kelton's or Irene's position, a player should be thinking that they want to bet enough to give them a high probability of at least a wild card if right, while still hopefully leaving the chance of winning the game if both players miss. In this case, Irene did that, while Kelton would have been going home if it had been a triple stumper. Yes, it would suck to miss out on a wild card because you bet $3000 instead of $4000 or $5000 on an easy FJ clue like this one, but there was still a lot of room between the $3000 wager and Kelton's all-in wager of $12,100. Irene could have even bet $7,000 or so and still kept 3rd locked out. She'd then be sitting pretty in the wild card race at $19,000, and would have won on a triple stumper with Kelton's all-in move. Of course she didn't know he was going to make that wager at the time, so I don't fault her too much for the $3,000 bet.Sherm wrote:His wager was better than Irene's. If it's not, it should be. As you know, econ, it's a huge event, drawing over a million attendees per year. Because that's a super wheelhouse for me. And yet every time J! does a retail category, they always throw one that stumps me. I remember being stymied on Urban Outfitters once — that's usually way too high end for me.
