Re: 2013 Summer Hiatus Challenge -- Round 1, Day 4
OUR NEW CETACEAN OVERLORDS
(Did I say overlords? I meant protectors.)
2: A rorqual cetacean – including this largest cetacean species – has a distinctive furrow of skin running from the navel to the mouth.
4: A dolphin's “melon” is a large, fatty organ used in this 12-letter sensory process.
6: While most cetaceans have this filter-feeder system, the odontoceti suborder has teeth.
8: While all cetaceans are carnivorous, this is the only type that will hunt other cetaceans.
10: The bowhead is also known as the Greenland variety of this “proper” type of whale.
DIED ON THE FOURTH OF JULY
3: 1934 -- This first female professor at the Sorbonne who won Nobel Prizes in two different sciences.
6: 1891 -- This Vice President who, in the summer of 1864, served as an enlisted man in the Maine Coast Guard.
9: 1995 -- This soft-spoken artist who made new episodes of PBS's “The Joy of Painting” from 1983 until 1994.
12: 1848 -- This French ambassador and romantic author who gave his name to a thick tenderloin fillet served with a bearnaise sauce.
15: 1546 -- This “red bearded” Ottoman admiral who had the same nickname as a crusading Holy Roman Emperor.
