Gee that's a tough one. Are many familiar with BN's variety show from that long ago? (I'd love to see an episode.) But they know his popular shows were later. I think most would guess Dick Van Dyke. And this may be technical, but he was nominated for writing (with his staff), not for being "in" the show.

Is there anybody else with a 50 year gap between first nomination and first win for any of the popular awards? I concede it may not be a good FJ and my writing could be cleaned up. Enjoy it as a trivia-worthy factoid if nothing else.

It -does- have the classic 'get it right for the wrong reason' element though; with the variety show having the same name as the later comedy (which is actually how I "got" it...except I confused him for Ed Asner. I blame Elf.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Andy Griffith was the best I could come up with. It worked ok on the front end, but the back end seemed a tad late. Looking it up, I see he died in 2012, so that instinct was correct.
