Summer Hiatus Challenge -- Round 2, Day 1

Post by DadofTwins » Mon Aug 08, 2011 3:19 pm

Later this afternoon or tomorrow morning there will be a scoreboard thread posted where you can see where you stand and check for any scoring errors. Stay tuned for that.

I hope to announce the official winner of Round 1 in the next 24 hours.

There is an RQ in today's post. You should play it if you didn't give one of the point-scoring responses to the R1D4 9-pointer about the number of judicial circuits and federal reserve districts. Not only do they not overlap, there's also a different number of them. I misread a map, so you get an RQ.

The rule of the RQ is that unless you scored the points originally, your score will be based on how you play the RQ. This is not a free guess; it's just a different clue.

On we go.

US LAW & GOVERNMENT BY THE NUMBERS

9: If Congress reamins in session the entire time, a President has this many days to veto a piece of legislation before it automatically becomes law.

FILL IN THE LATIN PROVERB

2: Morituri te salutant: “We who are about to” do this “salute you.”

4: Ab igne ignum capere: “Fight” this with itself.

6: Manus manam lavat: “One hand” does this to “the other.”

8: Lacrimae sunt arma feminae: These “are a woman's weapon.”

10: Gutta cavat lapidem: “A drop hollows out” this.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

3: The unit of frequency measured as cycles per second was renamed afert this physicist by the General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1960.

6: Pitch is the way the human ear perceives minute changes in this property of air measured in pascals.

9: A microphone and a loudspeaker are examples of this type of device that converts one type of energy into another.

12: The Newton-LaPlace Equation shows how this property of sound decreases as the density of the medium through which it travels increases.

15: Also called compression waves, these sound waves travel and vibrate in the same direction.
