CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Ryan Alley is a patent attorney from Virginia. I bet you've seen some weird creations. Which is the weirdest invention that received a patent?
Ryan: I sure have. Um, I get clients of all sizes through my door, so I see some good ideas and bad ones. Um, I don't think the weird one is safe to discuss. But a close runner-up is probably, um, an invention that uses operating nuclear reactors to actually create cancer therapies. So nuclear power's not all bad.
Alex: Wow. All right.
Alex: Jenica Jessen is a student and writer from Utah. Her major is poli-science--political science. And why did you pick that? Didn't a TV show have something to do with it?
Jenica: Um, yes. I--in high school, I was trying to decide what to major in, and about that time, I discovered the show The West Wing, which I absolutely loved.
Alex: Great show.
Jenica: And I discovered I was interested, not only in the plot and characters, but also in the technical aspects of what they were doing in the government. So I'm now pursuing a political science degree.
Alex: Good. And the political system in our country is exactly as it was on The West Wing.
Jenica: Totally.
Alex: Right? Right.
Jenica: Right.
Alex: Bill Albertini is our champion. He's a professor of English whose great-grandfather was into liquor?
Bill: Yes. My great-grandfather owned a liquor company in a small coal town in Pennsylvania, so around the family house, we have old, uh, jugs that say "Albertini Liquor Company" on them--
Alex: When was this, approximately?
Bill: --and even some that still have stuff in them. This is before Prohibition, and then moved into a car dealership when the first job became no longer legal.
Alex: Okay.
Bill: At least as far as we know.
Alex: All right. Thank you for that explanation.
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
THE LONG ARM OF THE LAW SCHOOL $600: Tulane was the USA's first law school to require this Latin-named work as a condition of graduation
(Jenica: What is a dissertation?)
BEVERAGES $1000: This soft drink once used the slogan "It'll tickle yore innards"
HOME DESPOT $200: Idi Amin
ON A BILLBOARD CHART IN 2014 $600: This down-under "Idol" country star duetted with Miranda Lambert on "We Were Us"
HOME DESPOT $1000: In Africa:
Omar al-Bashir
AFFAIRS OF THE HEART $1000: Spoiler alert! Jane Austen had George become the Knightley in shining armor for this woman
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Ryan: $6,000
Jenica: $6,000
Bill: -$400

American-Born Authors
In 1915 his reasons for naturalization included "having lived and worked in England for the best part of forty years".

Jenica Jessen: $8,800-$4,000=$4,800
Bill Albertini: $6,400+$6,398=$12,798

Re: Wednesday, October 29, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Another hot game! But for the second time this week, the champion's performance was muted and the contestant in the third spot screamed. Then the champ came to life just in time to keep Jenica from catching 50% of the leader. Was it just my imagination, or did the leader stretch out his calls on that last "heart" category? "Let's ... have ... affairs of the heart ... for ... 800."
Plenty of TSs to which I knew the answer. Apparently none of the contestants have studied the Wikipedia page for Mtn Dew, which has the slogan pictured in an old ad: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Dew
When the first contestant was negged on Barbaras, there was something in the way that Alex negged it that signaled to me that it was an error in pronunciation. So I knew Jenica would be negged on Bartholomew.
Too bad we won't see Jenica go from third podium to second podium to first podium!

I'm a bit ticked at the Chimborazo clue, notably with it being called the "furthest" point from the center of the Earth. When discussing physical distance "farthest" should be used.
Re: Wednesday, October 29, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Lach Trash: Mountain Dew, Keith Urban.
Three runs in J!: Beverages, Billboard, and Bone. I didn't even need the audio clue to get Macklemore.
I thought Idi Amin was undervalued at $200.
Ecuador was a stupid miss. I was panicking, thinking "oh shoot, South American country. Which ones are near the top? Colombia, Peru… damn it, what am I missing?" Overvalued clues tend to do that!
I still can't keep atrium/ventricle straight. Suggestions?
No guess on FJ! Can't say I recognize the name Henry James or the titles of any of his works.

So they show you a country on a map, even tell you a carefully worded fact about the eq...ahem center of the earth, and you guessed what??
You're down 10k+, LTaM...and you head for the top of the category!??!
I can't anymore. I just can't.
Once again we see the folly of offering a tie, needlessly running the risk of being destroyed by the new challenger the next day.

As far as in and out? Simple. A vent is used to let something out, so in through the atrium and out through the ventricle.TenPoundHammer wrote:I still can't keep atrium/ventricle straight. Suggestions?

Re: Wednesday, October 29, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I was going to say that it might have shown an added benefit of wagering for the tie, because Jenica wagered to tie Bill today, but it's a safe assumption that she knew that there are no ties for 2nd place and so the gesture was meaningless. It would be interesting to see if she would have returned the favor if she had been leading Bill in a non-lock game today.xxaaaxx wrote:So they show you a country on a map, even tell you a carefully worded fact about the eq...ahem center of the earth, and you guessed what??

Arteries carry blood Away from the heart. Veins carry blood to the heart.TenPoundHammer wrote:I still can't keep atrium/ventricle straight. Suggestions?
Well the chambers of the heart have the opposite mnemonic.
Ventricles carry blood away from the heart into the arteries. The atria receives the blood from the veins.
That's how I remember it.

Another T. S. Eliot here. I knew he wasn't old enough but couldn't think of a better response. I instantly knew Bill's response was correct when it was revealed.

I liked how when Alex used his standard "no harm, no foul" line on a clue all three players missed Bill reacted noticeably to the obvious wrongness of Alex's statement.

I don't remember how that clue was worded, but Milosevic served as the President of Serbia from 91 to 97.
Well played game overall. The "Anna Karenina" response sounded as if she had only seen the title in print, but had never heard it pronounced. Tough game for pronunciations. I had "Barnabus" instead of "Barabas".
As for FJ, I was stuck on Eliot for a while, knowing the timeline was not right, until Henry James popped in my head one second before time ran out.

Just an observation, I think why Ryan took a little extra time on his "Georgetown" DD during the J! Round is because George Washington U. Law School is also located near Pennsylvania Ave., but a few miles away. He is a lawyer & the patent office is located in the DC area (Arlington, VA), so I assume that he was giving the clue full and careful consideration.

I can't believe that I actually pre-called Henry James. I actually try not to get any potentials stuck in my head before the reveal - they generally refuse to move aside for correct responses when the time comes. But in this case, I just happened to think of Henry James during the commercials, and then amazingly they have a clue about an author originally American but spending most of his life in England, from the late 19th to early 20th century. I have read a comment somewhere about him being "more British than the British," or something to that effect, and of course his books generally involve English society. Probably didn't hurt that I checked in and out of "The Innocents" on TV just recently.

I too was thinking about Henry James (and T.S.
