Sometimes you need to know something to get it right. As I said above, I knew they had won three straight (actually three in four tournaments) so that was a good starting point. I wasn’t 100% certain it was Brazil, but I felt pretty confident.

No guess on FJ! You could have given me the hint of "South America" and I guarantee you I would've guessed literally everything BUT Brazil.
2000 years ago how many battles do you think were fought at night? Given that, just pick an astronomical event you would be able to witness in daylight hours. I actually don't know if they did fight battles at night, but once I imagined the battle, and it was light, it made it easy.

If you have basic World Cup knowledge, it's easy. If you have basic soccer knowledge, it's still pretty easy. Otherwise you're probably toast.

If I don't immediately know it, then I assume it's just something that I don't know. And then when I claim that, you all are like "dude, literally every word of the clue was pointing to this correct response." What do you want? Do you want me to puzzle it out or just know it? Because it seems like every time I try one, you ask me to do the other instead.

I found more than one hit. Don't worry about the author. It's the famous title that counts:

#8163, aired 2020-02-19 INFLUENTIAL WRITING $200: Rudolf Flesch found that the son of a friend had never been taught to sound out letters; hence the book "Why" he "Can't Read"
#7366, aired 2016-09-26 EDUCATION $800: "Why Johnny Still Can't" do this by Rudolf Flesch was a 1981 follow-up to the original 1955 bestseller
#6041, aired 2010-12-13 EDUCATION $200: In 1955 Rudolph Flesch wrote "Why Johnny Can't" do this, attacking current teaching practices
#5778, aired 2009-10-28 MUSIC'S MISSING PERSONS $1000: Don Henley: "____ Can't Read"
#5242, aired 2007-05-29 DR. SEUSS $1200: "The Cat in the Hat" was written in response to the literacy problem discussed in the 1955 book "Why" he "Can't Read"
#1724, aired 1992-02-13 EDUCATION $200: Teaching practices were attacked in Rudolph Flesch's 1955 book "Why" he "Can't Read"
#961, aired 1988-11-07 THE THREE R's $1000: The subtitle of this 1955 book by Rudolf Flesch is "& What You Can Do About It"
#295, aired 1985-10-25 THE '50s $200: In 1955, a Rudolf Flesch book explained "Why Johnny Can't" do this

As always just because a top box clue goes TS does not make the writers wrong with the clue or valuation although you like to have a grand jury indictment in such cases. It hit the three players wrong today for whatever reason. It happens.

This country, which is named after brazilwood, and whose capital, Brasilia, is home to the Brazilian government, has brought four World Cup titles home to its Brazilians.

Common Knowledge had the teams guess gazillion and zillion for 1000 x bigger after trillion. I like "brazillion".

That's still over a four-year gap since the last clue. And then six years before that. Hardly seems Pavlovian to me.

I have never read the book or even seen a copy of it. But I did get it right.

Just because it was a top box clue and a stand and stare means it was undervalued. The question wouldn’t be 100% on LL. It happens.

Seems they've been all over the place with their valuations on this through the years, I don't doubt it's pretty famous though I wonder if it's moreso for an older generation. I'm 41 and this didn't even ring a bell. I question the top row placement moreso given the ease of the 3 clues below it. "Common Sense", Socrates' student with "The Republic", and "Long Walk to Freedom" all seem very basic and in particular more common trivia subjects.

I just think that if you're going to ask for a Simpsons character in the top box, it should be someone a little more iconic than that.

Who Shot Mr. Burns was, apparently, not iconic...

Both. Hence Bamaman's use of the word "sometimes".
But I'm just the new guy, watching this thread with amusement.

What was the TOM for Los Angeles Times in Journalism for $400?
Watts riots, large newspaper. Of course, you have to know Watts is in LA, but again, you just have to know stuff.
I hate the "sometimes you just have to know stuff" excuse. Seems like a way to weasel out of lousy clue-writing.

Heaven forbid a show that has trivia recollection as its raison d'être require people to know trivia in the first place!
