Game Recap for Show #7024, 2015-03-12

Kristin Sausville game 2.
Single-player Final Jeopardy!

CONTESTANTS
Stephanie Hull, a graduate student of philosophy from Columbia, Missouri
Brad King, an automotive engineer from Hartland, Michigan
Kristin Sausville, a stay-at-home mom from Newark, Delaware (whose 1-day cash winnings total $24,801)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. A couple of times in recent programs on Jeopardy!, our champions seem to have been very surprised by the fact that they won the game. That was the case for Kristin yesterday. Look at her. She's still smiling about it. Says, "I--I don't know how I did it." Well, you did it because you out-smarted your two opponents. Can you do it again today against these challengers--Stephanie and Brad? Let's start finding out. Good luck, all three of you. Here we go. Let's go to work with these categories, shall we?...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
PRESIDENTIAL SECRETS (4/5, including 1 missed Daily Double)
TEAM OF THE WORLD SERIES MVP (2/3)
BRITISH AUTHORS (5/5)
COMPUTER ACTIONS (5/5)
POTENT POTABLES (3/5)

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Kristin found the Daily Double on the 5th clue. Kristin had $1,400, Brad was scoreless, and Stephanie was at $600. Kristin made it a True Daily Double, wagering $1,400.

PRESIDENTIAL SECRETS $1000: In the last year of his Presidency in 1844, he secretly married a woman 30 years younger
(Kristin: Who is Polk?)
(Alex: No. "Who is the handsome [*]?" [*]. So you're now tied with Brad for second place, with no money. [laughter])

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Stephanie: $1,600
Kristin: $1,600
Brad: $1,000

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Stephanie Hull is a graduate student of philosophy from Missouri. And she once competed in an event that I hosted for a number of years--the National Geography Bee.

Stephanie: Well, I competed at the state level. I was the youngest person from my school district to compete, um, at the state geography bee. I did it when I was in the 4th grade, and I was 9. And everybody else there was 13 and 14. So it was a somewhat terrifying experience.

Alex: I was often asked, "Why is it that there are so many more boys competing than girls in the subject of geography?"

Stephanie: I mean, that's definitely something we should strive for--to get better gender representation in the geography bee.

Alex: Yeah, cause it's a fabulously interesting subject.

Stephanie: It is. It is.

Alex: Okay. Good.

Alex: Brad King, automotive engineer from Michigan, appropriately. But a man who builds furniture.

Brad: I do.

Alex: Ah. That I admire. What kind of furniture are we talking about?

Brad: It's a little bit of everything--shelf units, beds, tables, chairs, uh, what-have-you.

Alex: Yeah. What's your favorite power tool?

Brad: Well, you can do everything with a table saw, can't you?

[Laughter]

Alex: Yeah, I've got a few scars, that would prove what you can do to yourself.

Alex: Now, Kristin Sausville from Newark, Delaware--

Kristin: Yes.

Alex: --is our champion. She and her brother, as is often the case, didn't get along too well when you were younger.

Kristin: Not so much.

Alex: But now all of that has changed. You have found something in common--

Kristin: We have.

Alex: --that brought you together.

Kristin: Yes.

Alex: What is that?

Kristin: We go to Bruce Springsteen concerts together.

Alex: And you never out-grow an interest in that kind of a performer?

Kristin: No. No, he's amazing.

Alex: Yes.

Kristin: Anybody who can see him live should.

Alex: Okay. Good.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
POTENT POTABLES $600: The letters "V.O.P." on the label of a bottle of cognac stand for this

POTENT POTABLES $1000: This Italian liqueur is made from tonda gentile hazelnuts grown in the Piedmont region
(Stephanie: What is amaretto?)

TEAM OF THE WORLD SERIES MVP $400: 1988:

(Alex: Brad, back to you, with a minute to go.)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Kristin: $4,400
Stephanie: $3,200
Brad: $2,600

PREFINAL REMARKS
Alex: And bad news for Brad and Stephanie. This was not one of our greatest days, both of you figuring in the red. And at the end of Double Jeopardy! that means you're not around to play in Final Jeopardy! So, it's you all by yourself, Kristin. I think you're gonna win the game. It all depends on how you handle this Final Jeopardy! category...
...
Alex: [After the break] Kristin and I are alone together. An opportunity to get to know each other. All right, Kristin, THE U.S. GOVERNMENT is the subject, and here is the clue for you...

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
THE U.S. GOVERNMENT

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Solo play.
Kristin: If you're of the martian persuasion, bet $8,399, but if you're a venusian who can't stand the thought of losing money already earned, then bet closer to $0. Either way, you're coming back tomorrow, unless you foolishly wager $8,400 and give the wrong response. $0 is never a winning score.

Is Stephanie sure she was in the Geography Bee? Because her performance in EAST ASIAN CITIES makes me think otherwise. I know, lights and all, but "Phnom Penh" when given "Vietnam"?

Exhibit A (along with the other one-player FJs) as to why you should always Stay Clam if you don't know it, guessing is Bad News. Except on a DD or FJ, where guessing doesn't hurt, guessing *does* hurt here. (Offer not valid if you're not playing or trying to get on the show hint hint TPH, those people can guess if they're not tracking their Coryat and if you're not trying to get on there's no need to track Coryat)

First FJ miss for me since February 27 (March 2 if you include Daytime J!) :(

Who is going to think of Keith?? Whatever will he do today???

Well, that was kind of painful/hilarious. You could kind of see Stephanie lose her composure and never really recover. I don't usually pay attention to the post-game, but I noticed Alex pretend to shake hands with the person at the second podium. I also happened to notice that Kristin is pretty tall--she was taller than Brad (who was taller than Stephanie) and nearly as tall as Alex.

I was annoyed that we didn't get to two baseball clues, but I guess it's not surprising that they left it until last given that none of them could get the Dodgers spotted Orel Hershiser and Kirk Gibson.

I keep wondering if Justin is going to come up in the interview segment. I also remember Kristin mentioning that she was a holdover contestant from the previous taping day, so she was called for yesterday's game pretty much as late as she could have been--lots of time to get nervous, play one game, then have a lunch break at perhaps not the optimal time, but she seems to have taken it in stride. Way to go, Kristin, and more retroactive good luck!

I guessed FJ correctly today. It probably has more to do with the clues than me, but I'm on a pretty good run--4 for 5 the week before last, 5 for 5 last week, 3 for 4 so far this week.

Wow. OK historians, someone surely knows the last time we had a single player in FJ? I don't remember ever seeing it, nor do I remember someone being as far in the negative as Stephanie. You never know how nerves are gonna hit you until they hit you.

Haven't seen today's Jeopardy, and won't for a couple more hours, but apparently Stephanie really bombed out. And she's getting pilloried on Twitter, mercilessly.

To those jackasses, I say this: when you beat out about 99,600 other people after two tests and an in-house interview, _then_ you get to mock those who don't do well on the show. Okay?

The last time that had happened was in Tom Kunzen's 2nd game. His opponents had -$1400 and -$3600.

It's a new record as far as we know. Fellow boardie Hans von Walter has $6,000 below in the CC vs. Erin McLean.

Heather Chapman, one of Dan Pawson's victims, had $6,200 below, which is the recorded record. (Dan won that game with $200)

As for single player, Tom Kunzen's game is the last, March 16, 2011.

Instaget FJ. Not sure why this wasn't a triple get.

...couldn't resist.

I don't even remember most of the clues in DJ, because I was standing there with my mouth hanging open, amused and horrified, as they slowly imploded, wondering if the solo FJ would actually happen, and then it did. Holy $#*!. I'm sure this has happened before, but it's the first time I've ever witnessed it.

That clue seemed like it began life as "cut and paste" but got changed somewhere along the way, perhaps by someone who thought Ctrl+X was too hard to figure out (or worse, realized the devlishness of Ctrl+C). I think this because, to my mind, cutting seems "artsy & craftsy" but not copying.
