Game Recap for Show #7040, 2015-04-03

CONTESTANTS
Pat Kavanaugh, a marketing content manager from Chicago, Illinois
Tom Imler, a data repair technician from Cary, North Carolina
Kerry Greene, a volunteer guardian ad litem from Manchester, New Hampshire (whose 2-day cash winnings total $42,802)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. This has been, so far, a week of big wins for our champions. Kerry was kind of forced into wagering a lot in yesterday's Final because she had one of the challengers very close to her and could've surpassed her. But it worked out to her advantage. And today, she faces Tom and Pat, or Pat and Tom. Welcome. Good luck. Here we go. And the categories now in play are...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
NEW ENDINGS FOR CLASSIC LIT (5/5) (Alex: You have to identify the work we have decided to extend.)
TV (5/5)

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS (5/5)
IN LIFE (4/5)

20th CENTURY AMERICA $600: Section 1 of the 18th amendment, the only one ever repealed, ends, "is hereby" this verb
(Tom: What is void?)

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Kerry: $3,000
Pat: $400
Tom: $0

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Pat Kavanaugh is a marketing content manager from Chicago, Illinois. And she had an experience in an elevator. She was stuck there for a while.

Pat: I was trapped there for two hours. And if I had known what the rescue was gonna be, I'd probably still be there.

Alex: What happened?

Pat: They dropped a ladder down from the top--

Alex: Well, wait a minute. How many floors up or down are we talking about?

Pat: Uh, I was suspended just above the lobby, but it was an express elevator so there were no doors.

Alex: Oh.

Pat: So I had to climb up, I had to step across, and ride the top of the next elevator car up to the 21st floor. And then, get on an elevator again.

Alex: Wonder Woman!

[Laughter]

Alex: Good for you. I bet you had a little drink after that one.

Pat: I did.

Alex: Okay, Tom Imler, data repair technician. You are a Freemason.

Tom: I am, yes.

Alex: Whenever people think about Freemasonry nowadays, we think of it as something that relates to the past, not the present. Tell me what's happening.

Tom: Uh, it's still very vital. We still have--we still get a lot of young men, um, who come to us looking to join. They're interested in the history. They're interested in the fraternity of it. And, uh, we're still initiating all the time new, young members every--every year, every month, you know, a lodge is getting--somewhere is getting a new, young member.

Alex: Okay, good for you guys.

Alex: Now Kerry Greene is our champion. She is from New Hampshire, but she has lived at 38 different addresses. What was the best place?

Kerry: Well, I liked the, uh, two years in San Diego.

Alex: Ah.

Kerry: Can't complain about that.

Alex: Aha. Weather's--

Kerry: Much better than New Hampshire.

Alex: Well, very similar, very similar.

[Laughter]

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
IN LIFE $400: In common law, the age of this, signaling adulthood, is presumed to be 14 in boys & 12 in girls
(Tom: What is the age of consent?)
(Kerry: What is majority?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Tom: $4,200
Kerry: $2,400
Pat: $2,000

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Tom: $20,800
Kerry: $11,600
Pat: $8,000

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
EUROPEAN HISTORY

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Tom: Wager $2,401 to cover Kerry, but no more than $4,799 so as not to fall behind Pat's doubled score.
Kerry: You have the hope of surpassing Tom if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $9,201 to force Tom to wager to win while also protecting your position from being usurped by Pat.
Pat: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
A 3-letter 9th century tribe is in the names of 2 21st century countries: the world's most vast, & this one

FINAL SCORES
Pat: $8,000 + $5,000 = $13,000 (What is Belarus?) (2nd place)
Kerry: $11,600 + $11,598 = $23,198 (What is Bylorus?) (42803-day champion: $23,198)
Tom: $20,800 - $9,300 = $11,500 (What is Hungary?) (3rd place)
(Alex: [To Pat] Yes, the Rus.)
...
(Alex: [To Kerry] Yes, she didn't spell it, uh, in a way that, uh, we'll still accepting it, though, because the pronunciation doesn't change.)
...
(Alex: One final note before I say good-bye. In the first round of play today, we messed up rather badly in our phrasing of the clue about confirmation and communion in the Roman Catholic faith. Fortunately, it didn't affect the outcome. Nevertheless, I do want to apologize for that mistake and promise you that we will do better on Monday.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $3,600

I don't remember there ever being an apology from AT at the end of a game for a bad clue. I hope this is a new precedent.

Good play from the three contestants. I'll bet the second-place finisher wishes he'd made the game a lock with that Wells Fargo DD.

FJ was an instaget. I absentmindedly said "Russia and Belarus." I wonder if that would have flown.

I think it's pretty amazing that the three largest banks in the USA each have over a trillion dollars in deposits, yet two of the three are about a billion dollars apart, or 1/10 of 1%.

Well done Kerry on staying within catching distance of a very good challenger. I would not have been happy to have him back on Monday taking so long to pick a frickin' clue every time.

I did pretty poorly, no runs (i said Santiago instead of Oslo). Instaget FJ though, making it two 4/5s in a row for me which I'm pretty happy about.

Adding "the world's most vast" imho made it too easy, taking it out of FJ! quality material.

And yeah, I agree that "apology" at the end was rather odd, especially since it was apologizing for a first-round clue, had plenty of opportunity (end of J! round, beginning of DJ!, end of DJ!, start of Final) to do it ...

Probably...but I'd bet if they hadn't included it, it would've been a TS with all 3 of them saying Hungary.

Instaget FJ.

Looked like she got stuck halfway between Belarus and Byelorussia. If there's a legit reason to accept her answer, no sweat. "Doesn't change the pronunciation", though? Have I been pronouncing 'Belarus' incorrectly? Do the natives pronounce it differently?

Congratulations, Kerry, on your third win, although Tom also played really well but he couldn't get FJ. I had 39 correct responses including two triple stumpers: puberty and Monroe Doctrine. I ran the "1965 #1 Songs" category. I also got FJ.

It looked like she was doing a mash-up of the old Byelorussia SSR and Belarus. Certainly in English they're not the same, don't know about natives. Although she clearly knew the country, I wouldn't have given it to her.

Interesting, fun game. Funny, my wife and I are both products of Catholic education, and we both said, "Whaaat?" at the Confirmation question. That was one big honking error, IMHO.

Nice to see the N.H. gal come back for Monday.

FJ was an Instaget for me, but I thought the clue was poorly written. It didn't seem clear, to me at least, if they were asking for both countries, or just Belarus.

I wonder how long before Tom's "age of consent" response ends up on Youtube.

For the second game in a row there was an easy geography category. I can get used to that.

I blanked on FJ. There was no excuse for missing that one.

I hate to be the one to play armchair judge and say "bad call," but that's a bad call. Byelaros shouldn't have counted. On the other hand, I'd argue that Tom really should have bet to win on Wells Fargo. He was doing well in the category IIRC and had enough of a lead to go for it. So maybe it all cancels out, knowing that Tom had the power to end the game and didn't use it. Compelling match all around and full respect to all three players.

I enjoyed the meaningless 3200 wager on the second DD, when it was somewhat low risk to guarantee himself 1st.

What I enjoyed even more was his Final wager, wagering himself right out of a guaranteed 2nd.

Stefani was my only get in TV.

Surprised myself by getting all but Four Tops in 1965. Also all but handsaw in W.

Lach Trash: Prohibited.

Why is "saw" -> "handsaw" an outright neg and not a BMS?

Hmm, try big countries. China? Nope. India? Nope. United States, don't be ridiculous. I think that's all of them, so I'm stumped. Oops. I knew the Belarus/Russia connection, but I just couldn't see Russia from my house. I love how it's always the one thing I don't think of that's right.

That clue hit home for me, because I will be going through Adult Confirmation next month, Pentecost weekend. I have been studying about the sacrament and noticed immediately that the clue was wrong. I think that age 12 is the standard Confirmation age for kids. BTW, my guess was Reconciliation/Penance. It was bugging me for the next 20 minutes. That said, I'm glad that Alex made the announcement at the end of the game. I've never seen that before. My suspicion is that a the live audience crowd may have contained a practicing Catholic who called the matter to the attention of the J! crew.

You know, now that I think of it, this may have been one of the most train-wreck games of Jeopardy in a while. From the "age of consent" gaffe to confirmation/Eucharist to the questionable DD wager to the controversy at Final. Very strange, and very fascinating.

I think either the clue or the category mentioned Europe, so your guesses were out. Besides "most vast" is a superlative, pinning it to just one country.

It was well after the champion was crowned and people were applauding. I had already stopped my tape and had to watch the rest to get it after reading about it here. (Thank goodness it was Friday as I usually delete right after watching but I keep Friday's games until I Archive them.). To be more specific he said the Catholic clue was badly worded (somehow, he didn't say and I still haven't picked up how) but it didn't result in any score changes.

Vanya will know better than I, but I think Byelorus is pretty close to the way it's pronounced in the country.

Also, I presume the apology was taped some time later, wearing the clothes that matched what he was wearing during the game. He also sometimes re-records mispronounced or slightly bungled clue readings after games and they use the re-record for the version that's broadcast.

If it was, they did a great job because it seemed like the audience realized Alex had something to say and stopped applauding.

Can Kerry or anyone present confirm?
