Count me in as never having heard of Golden Spurs... Or "earning your spurs".
I went with Golden Gloves. If stepping into the ring to have a guy throw punches at your head isn't
an act of bravery (and stupidity), I don't know what is...
I went right to Google on Golden Spurs, and found many hits on a 1302 "Battle Of The Golden Spurs". Never heard of that, either.
I have an idea that this one could end up in the next "Toughest Final J!" poll, even though a player got it and a couple here seem to have heard of it.

I got "spurs" right away, but probably only because I'm a fan of medieval history. I think "golden" was no help at all, and "earning your spurs" is kind of obscure, so I can see why Amit and others here had trouble with it. (Amit actually told me not long ago that he was going back and forth between the right and wrong answers in his mind, just like I did with Werther and Hershey. So I identify.)
This could have been a good night for me (sigh), but ONLY if I could have avoided those Daily Doubles, which killed me, I'm embarrassed to admit. I could have stood up there for a year and not come up with "axial" for the CAT scan DD.
And while I love and admire Placido Domingo, I just wanted to tell him to Shut Up so the contestants could answer. Very poorly executed clue IMHO, and I'm an opera lover.

Never heard of golden spurs. I also went with gloves for lack of a better guess.

Also never heard of golden spurs - or earning your spurs, and sure as hell never associated spurs with medieval knights!
I also wondered if the contestants knew to ring in during the singing. And I consider "Pinkerton" to be a pavlovian clue for opera.

I think the contestants were able to ring in early on Madame Butterfly, considering Domingo was interrupted by the timeout sound.
Spurs sounded vaguely familiar to me, and I think it was the first real guess I thought of, but never associating knights with spurs I decided to go with ribbons.
Swept Opera, swept Movie Song Titles.
Annoyed by the wording of the 'psychoanalysis' clue... You don't 'treat' with analysis, which is what lead me to 'therapy.' If they used 'diagnose,' that would've been a different story. Forgot Father Damien Closest I got was 'That six letter named Father who worked with lepers.' Mutter...

I would bet there was the normal few seconds of silence, but it was edited out for time.econgator wrote:I was waiting for him to stop and then when he did, beep-beep-beep.
On the topic of time... I'm guessing this long clue (longest ever?) was the reason why the rest of the show was insanely rushed.

Well, a bit relieved that several others NHO the correct FJ answer, and won't feel bad missing this one in the poll. I seem to be the only one who answered "garter" however (remembering there is an "Order of the Garter" that is for those pretty high up on the peerage's food chain).
The Placido clue for me was all "oh, which opera could that be - oo, nice singing!" I blame the ADD. (In all defence, I never would have got it, I'm one of those fans that Suze talked about who just really knows the basics (only got the $800 clue, missed $1200 and clammed the rest), but I don't mind hearing several operas (didn't care for what I heard of that "tour de force" one, though.)

nope. like suze, i was watching this game from the studio audience as a waiting-to-be-drawn contestant. i was stunned when the beepbeepbeep sounded during placido—i didn't notice that the lights had come on, and had no inkling that you could interrupt a video or audio clue. i pointed it out to maggie the next day (when i returned as one of the two uncalled stragglers from the day before) and she says she has since incorporated it into her spiel. although it still seems a shame to interrupt placido domingo.heelsrule1988 wrote:I would bet there was the normal few seconds of silence, but it was edited out for time.econgator wrote:I was waiting for him to stop and then when he did, beep-beep-beep.
also, never heard of golden spurs. "earning your spurs" is familiar, but the golden mention threw me off. i don't know what i would have written, but gauntlet is as good as anything. anyway, really nice comeback by matt when it looked like he was dead in the water. i feel for amit, though.

With the length of Placido's aria, I guessed The Ring Cycle.

Don't feel too bad, I've had over a dozen CAT scans but didn't know what it stood for.jbillygirl wrote:IThis could have been a good night for me (sigh), but ONLY if I could have avoided those Daily Doubles, which killed me, I'm embarrassed to admit. Domingo's clue was long, but longer than the two page clue the lady read who wrote the book about Liberia? And all we needed to hear was "This is the capital of Liberia".

I would have been tempted to go TDD on that one. I was running the category and felt good about my chances. It would have paid off, too, because "axial" was an instaget.jbillygirl wrote:This could have been a good night for me (sigh), but ONLY if I could have avoided those Daily Doubles, which killed me, I'm embarrassed to admit. On the Pinkerton clue, the lights to answer did go on for sure while the dude was singing. They were on for a while. In the audience, it was a painful little spot to watch.
Never heard of golden spurs. Until Monday's FJ, I would've guessed it was the name of a casino.

Same here. My only thought was, "Wasn't there a ballet about Billy the Kid?"Bamaman wrote:I'd heard Pinkerton as being the male lead before, but couldn't come up with it tonight. His name got me sidetracked on detectives and never came close.
As for FJ, only thing I could come up with was, "Eggs," as in, "Goose that lays the golden....."

FJ! was an instaget for me for several reasons, including my reading in medieval history (real and fantasy). Plus, since knights are mounted warriors, it would make sense for them to "earn their spurs".
I could have done without the Met category, knowing next to nothing about opera (although I did get several right). Placido could have sung all night and I wouldn't have come up with Madame Butterfly - I, too, was thinking something American because Pinkerton=detective.

Can anyone please explain to me what the Notions in the DJ round was about? The clues seemed absolutely random.
Instaget on FJ. i think the contestants were still half asleep, because there was some easy trash pickup: Happy Days, D.C. residents, Gagarin, Father Damian, Las Vegas, Live and Let Die, The Crying Game, psychokinesis...

When was this episode taped? While still limping and in the boot, Alex's walking seemed to be much improved over last week's episodes.

I believe this week's episodes were taped on August 23. I taped on August 2, and Alex had surgery the next day (the August 3 tapings were canceled for that reason), so he had a little less than 3 weeks to convalesce. Hence his improved mobility, I think.chuck5982 wrote:When was this episode taped? While still limping and in the boot, Alex's walking seemed to be much improved over last week's episodes.

"Notions" are supplies for sewing. Hence the clues on thimble, needle, etc.DBear wrote:Can anyone please explain to me what the Notions in the DJ round was about? The clues seemed absolutely random.
