CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Maybe it's because of my upbringing in Canada, but I've always been very fond of hockey, and Brennan Bushee was a hockey player and had one of those unfortunate accidents occur.

Brennan: Yes, this was especially unfortunate. I lost my pants.

Alex: Yeah.

[Laughter]

Brennan: During a high school hockey game, I was 16. Um, the buckle on them was broken, and I had been holding up--I had been holding them up with tape, but one day I ran out of tape, so I decided to wing it, and during the third period, there they went.

Alex: Did the word "suspenders" mean anything to you?

[Laughter]

Brennan: I had some. I didn't--I wasn't wearing them. [Laughs]

Alex: Okay. As long as it worked out all right.

Brennan: Yes.

Alex: Amy Merrick, a university instructor from Chicago who was on another game show. I wanna hear about that.

Amy: That's right. When I was 6 years old, I was on the--

Alex: 6?

Amy: I was on The Bozo Show in Chicago. My cousin and I were chosen for opposite teams. There was a relay. You had to stuff a pillow in a pillowcase and pass it to the next person. My cousin won. Their team won. Uh, I got the consolation prize, which was a year's supply of Big League Chew.

Alex: You're here and your cousin is not.

Amy: Exactly.

Alex: All right, that's important.

Alex: Darren Harris-Fain is an English teacher. He is our champion, and sometimes when we're traveling, particularly in foreign lands, we run into things that are quite unexpected and sometimes frightening. And that happened to you and your wife, didn't it?

Darren: Uh, yes, my wife Julie and I were in Mexico. Uh, we're at a resort. We're walking to the beach and run across an iguana this long, and we've never encountered an iguana before and weren't sure what it'd do if we tried to go around it. Finally, a nice college student came up behind us and said, "Oh, it's just warming itself. You can just go around it."

Alex: Absolutely. You don't get that kind of explanation with the komodo dragon, however.

[Laughter]

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Darren found the Daily Double on the 17th clue. Darren had $1,800, Amy had $2,400, and Brennan was at $3,800. Darren made it a True Daily Double, wagering $1,800.

NOVELS BY COUPLE $800: Hazel Grace &
Augustus Waters

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
LUCKY 13 $1000: The apparitions of the Virgin in this town in 1917 were said to occur on the 13th of each month for 6 months
(Brennan: What is Lourdes?)
(Darren: What is Guadalupe?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Brennan: $8,600
Darren: $4,200
Amy: $3,200

Darren: 8 R (including 1 DD), 0 W
Amy: 7 R (including 1 DD), 0 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 5
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $7,600

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Darren snagged the next Daily Double on the 4th clue. Darren had $5,000, Amy had $3,200, and Brennan was at $9,000. Darren wagered $2,000.

MOVIE TITLE POSSESIVES $800: This 1993 film set during WWII was nominated for 12 Oscars

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Amy who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 11th clue. Darren had $7,000, Amy had $5,600, and Brennan was at $10,200. Amy wagered $2,000.

LIVES OF THE SCIENTISTS $2000: From 1947 to 1952 he was chairman of the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
MOVIE TITLE POSSESIVES $1200: A failed hit on Irish crime boss Albert Finney leads to an all-out mob war in this 1990 Coen Brothers film

MOVIE TITLE POSSESIVES $1600: "Hired killers by day... lovers by night. Until they found their next assignment was each other" was this film's tagline

MOVIE TITLE POSSESIVES $2000: 15 is middle-aged in this 1976 Michael York sci-fi flick; folks turning 30 don't turn 31

STATE AMPHIBIANS & REPTILES $800: The resolution making this largest North American frog Oklahoma's state amphibian says it makes a "jug-o-rum" sound

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Brennan: $19,000
Amy: $13,600
Darren: $13,000

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
19th CENTURY POETRY

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Brennan: Wager $8,201 to cover Amy.
Amy: You ought to wager to cover Darren, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings by betting all $13,600. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $12,400 (to shut out Darren) or less than $2,800 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Darren). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Brennan.
Darren: Consider risking between $601 and $2,200. This will top a $0 wager by Amy while still beating Brennan on the Triple Stumper (should Brennan wager to cover Amy's doubled score).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
He rhymed the title character of one of his best-known poems with "drew on", "threw on" & "ruin"

FINAL SCORES
Darren: $13,000 + $12,500 = $25,500 (Who is Lord Byron?) (3rd place)
Amy: $13,600 + $12,401 = $26,001 (Who ar is Lord Byron) (2nd place)
Brennan: $19,000 + $8,201 = $27,201 (Who is Lord Byron?) (New champion: $27,201)
(Alex: And the poem, of course, was called Don Juan.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $8,600

This was an excellent game for all three players, and lots of fun to watch! I had 42 correct responses including two triple stumpers: Prizzi's Honor, and bullfrog. Instaget FJ.

After a long time a marvelous game. Will wait for Golf to comment on DD betting. :)

No chance on FJ. Surprised it was triple get.

Great game to watch.

I got bullfrog and Anzio, both triple stumpers.

I knew what poem they were talking about in FJ, but blanked on the author's name-guessed Shelley.

The tough FJs (for me) continue. The correct response was obvious from Alex's post Think Music remarks, but I couldn't come up with anything during the Think Music. I guessed Lewis Carroll, thinking that it sounded like it could be something very Lewis Carroll-esque.

I spent the 30 seconds like this; "Crap, who wrote Don Juan? Keats? Maybe... Shelley - no, it's not Shelley. Wordsworth - no. Who was that other one? ........ Byron! Yeah, that's right, Byron."
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

I'll anticipate with my realization, post facto, that I should have done a true Daily Double on the movie clue.

Amy and Brennan were both strong players, so I wasn't surprised by the triple get, but I admit I was hoping to be the only one when I saw the category. :)

At first I said Edward Lear, then switched it to Lord Byron when I thought Don Juan might work.

I also noticed that you were having tough time on buzzer. You should have taken that into consideration too.
Anyways, well played and 3 wins is not easy.

The clue never stated that the two rhymed, only that Byron used one to rhyme with the other.

Rugged game for sure, and the history geek in me was disappointed that Anzio was a TS. Really?

On the other hand, I was impressed with everyone's FJ answer. As a writer, I hold my head down in shame, for I had no idea.

Congrats to the new champ.
