Game Recap for Show #7098, 2015-06-24

CONTESTANTS
Pat DeVane, a graduate student originally from Wheaton, Illinois
Shayna Kravetz, an educator and writer from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Matt Pressman, a graduate student in history from Somerville, Massachusetts (whose 1-day cash winnings total $13,800)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. One thing we learned on yesterday's program--it's important to do well in all three rounds. Our champion, Matt, got two out of three. Didn't succeed in Final Jeopardy!, but he had made the game a runaway, and that's why he wasn't able to accumulate a lot of money. Shayna and Pat, welcome aboard. Good luck to all of you. Here we go. Now a look at the categories, starting off with...

LOVE THOSE ANNELIDS! (4/4)
THE BUSINESS OF TECH (5/5)
A HOST OF TV HOSTS (5/5)
SCRABBLE PLAYERS DICTIONARY "G" (4/5)

ANAGRAMMED WORLD (5/5) (Alex: And there is a theme in [*], and if you discover it early on, it will help you.)

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: For some reason, in recent days on Jeopardy! we've been talking a lot about when players got engaged to their mates. Pat DeVane, tell me about your situation when you proposed.

Pat: Well, when I proposed to my wife, Katie, I had a pretty simple plan. We were gonna go to the beach. I was gonna propose on the beach, then go to dinner afterwards. And I parked illegally, admittedly. The car got towed. Uh, in the process of trying to get my car, I locked my keys in my apartment, and I had to break in my apartment window by crawling in through the, uh, through the window. And I got the keys, got the car, and then got engaged later that night, so. It all worked out in the end.

Alex: Yeah, so no problem.

Pat: No problem.

Alex: Good.

Pat: That's right.

Alex: Shayna Kravetz from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, owns silver candlesticks that are special in your family. Why?

Shayna: Very special. My parents were in Europe for the Second World War, um, and they were in hiding. And so my grandmother, bless her memory, buried the candlesticks and came back at the end of the war to find them and bring them to North America.

Alex: Okay, terrific.

Alex: Matt Pressman is our champion. He's a graduate student in history, and he's from Somerville, Massachusetts, which doesn't necessarily mean he's a Boston Red Sox fan, but he is. And he attended a playoff game at Yankee Stadium, and he wore a Red Sox shirt.

Matt: Yes, naturally, and hat.

Alex: Of course.

[Laughs]

Alex: Uh, any problems with that?

Matt: Yes. A slight problem. As I was on my way back to my seat in the bleachers in the late innings, I heard some people chanting, and they were saying, "Kill-that-guy!" And I looked around, and I realized they were pointing at me.

[Laughter]

Alex: Yankee fans are nice fans.

Matt: [Laughs] They are.

Alex: They didn't mean it.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Shayna found the Daily Double on the 19th clue. Matt had $2,000, Shayna had $4,000, and Pat was at $2,000. Shayna wagered $1,500.

GET UP & DANCE! $600: Swing dances include the Lindy Hop & this frenetic one whose name means "a nervous person"
(Alex: That brings back memories for some of us.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
SCRABBLE PLAYERS DICTIONARY "G" $1000: It's an 8-letter adverb meaning "in a spherical way"

GET UP & DANCE! $400: Kick up your heels to this Baroque dance in 3/4 time
(Matt: What is a waltz?)

GET UP & DANCE! $1000: This dance may have been a "drag", but it was all the rage on college campuses in the late '20s

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Shayna: $6,700
Matt: $4,600
Pat: $3,800

In 2014 CNN declared Zambia's Guy Scott the first white president in Sub-Saharan Africa since this man in 1994

I had real hope for her when she bet so well on that DD! I might be starting to take this game too personally.

This was a pretty good game. But Shayna had the lead going into FJ and she got FJ right, but she didn't win. I had 36 correct responses including two triple stumpers: globally and minuet. I also got the missed DD of Anglo-Saxon. I got FJ after thinking about it for a few seconds.

WTF? So her grand idea was trying to stay above Matt, if he bet 0 and she got it wrong, without caring that she'd drop below Pat's doubled score?! SERIOUSLY!?? And the aggravating thing is, that nonsense would've won if Matt had bet 1201 to cover Pat (or 3501 to top Shayna). UGH. Anyone trying to get a feel for proper FJ wagering by watching the show is learning all the wrong lessons this week.

So anyway, instaget FJ. That clue was a guaranteed triple get, since I'd bet rent money they couldn't name another sub-Saharan white guy. Between that, Anglo-Saxon, jitterbug, and precipitate, easy clues today.

Out of all the things to emulate about Brennan, his Monday FJ was not one of them.

I hope Matt at least buys a round of drinks or something.

Sorry to post a serious issue here, but here goes.

The FJ wagers notwithstanding, I thought that this was an excellent game.

I was waiting for a clue on Leonardo DiCaprio in the category that was on basketball movies. I didn't realize that there were so many!

I knew exactly to whom the FJ clue referred and could see his face, but I couldn't recall his name

FJ was an Instaget for me, and I managed to even spell De Klerk's name right... :D

But for the love of all that is holy, what was up with that FJ wagering? Dear me. I mean... dear me. Poor Shayna. Two bucks... ouch.

Trying to make some positive comments here. I'll let everyone else go negative.

Congratulations to Matt. Missed a DD, had an opponent get 2 DDs, trailing going into FJ, still wins. Playing smart.

On FJ, for some reason Kohl was the first name that popped in my head (world leader from that era I guess), but then I quickly realized "Wait, he's German", started thinking of South Africa, and fortunately de Klerk popped in my head. I don't think I would've been able to come up with a first name / initials.

I think if I were in Shayna's position, I would've tried to lock the game up on the final DD. Personal preference, I think I would've stood a better chance on a science question than leaving the (FJ) category up to the fates. But I can understand if she did not feel the same way.
Edit: Never mind. I had thought she was in the lead prior to the last DD.

Well, she was in 2nd at the time, best she could do was take the lead, so she still needed to get FJ right (and wager properly...)

Who?
Also, betting strategy, I'm guessing they don't have too much time to think about it.

It seemed to me Shayna was much shorter when they came back for FJ, as if they lowered the height of her riser, or she was melting. :D
