All those FJs were instagets for me, but phrasing the population center response gave me a real problem. I knew the concept but struggled with my wording, but they looked like they were being pretty generous about that. Anyway, an fascination with the modern Olympic games and graduate work in medieval literature finally paid off for me! That doesn't happen often.

Spurs didn't occur to me. I could see Ho Chi Minh and Salinger in my mind but I could not spit out their names in time.

The expression you generally hear/see is "win your spurs." I know the phrase just from reading loads of historical novels. In analyzing the question, I think people have put a bit too much emphasis on the 'golden' part of the question. The gold part didn't really matter.
