Alex: The first player we introduce on the program today, Carl Holmgren, has an interesting job. He is a former toothpaste formulation specialist. What exactly does that mean, Carl?

Carl: That means I have forgotten more about what goes into a tube of toothpaste than most people will ever know.

[Laughter]

Alex: What's the most important thing that should be in our toothpaste?

Carl: Fluoride.

Alex: That's it?

Carl: That's it.

Alex: Okay. Good for you. You're getting the message across.




Alex: Deborah Henry, a retired attorney from Maineville, Ohio, who, along with members of her family, has a total of over 100 years working for the same company. What kind of work are we talking about?

Deborah: Yes, that's right.

Alex: What's the company?

Deborah: It was a public utility.

Alex: And years and years of family members working there?

Deborah: Yes, yes. My father, his brother, two of my cousins, and myself, and altogether, we have over a hundred years experience.

Alex: And is the company still in business, or has it folded?

Deborah: It is still in business, but it's part of a larger organization now. It's been bought and merged. Yes.

Alex: All right.




Alex: Ashley Wilson is our champion. She is from Virginia, and there's a little bit of country music in the lady's background, according to her grandparents.

Ashley: Yes. They're--uh, my grandparents were friends with Roy Clark, the hall of fame country music singer. Um, when he was trying to make it in music before he got big, uh, he became friends with my grandparents. He saw--actually, the way they met was, my grandfather was riding down the road on his motorcycle, standing up, and Roy Clark passed in his truck and said, "I gotta meet that guy", and flagged him over to the side of the road and introduced himself, and that's how they because friends.

Alex: He should've written a song about him, too.

Ashley: I'm not sure that he didn't. I should look.

Alex: "Riding Down The Road On My Harley, Standing Up".

R1, Offbeat Museums, $800: could you make a case for accepting 'udon' if one of the containers they showed in the picture clearly said 'udon' (うどん) in hiragana? I was quickly trying to look over it and didn't see 'ramen' (ラーメン) anywhere on the container. Udon and ramen are two distinct kinds of noodles (I'd even argue two different dishes), and instant udon is also a thing.

Began to think 'Intolerable Acts' for FJ!, then switched gears to the Stamp Act about 20 seconds in.

I had Stamp Act right off, and as the clue specified "law" and not "laws" I saw no reason to go to the Intolerable/Coercive Acts.

Did anyone make the same mistake I did on the lunchbox clue in the unusual museums category?

I thought: Something containing food that has a comic book character on it? Must be Pez dispensers!

(I agree that lunchboxes is a better answer, because the clue said "container", but nevertheless, Pez dispensers are the first thing that popped into my head.)

I got FJ, but was mildly worried I was overlooking another law that specifically mentioned tea.

Lots to talk about today! The carousel finally ends with a huge win for Ashley, first off. Maybe we'll see an extended run to start the year?

Got 35 right today, with no negs. Either this was a pretty easy game or I got much smarter in my sleep.

And I've decided that I'm going to start tracking my Coryat scores this year. Starting next week, all the way through to December. Maybe. That's my New Year's Resolution, so with my record it'll probably last three weeks. But I'm gonna try!

Well, according to Wikipedia, "modern forms of the name include Freya, Freija, Frejya, Freyia, Fröja, Frøya, Frøjya, Freia, Freja, Frua and Freiya" so I'd say yes.

Congratulations to Ashley on her second win. Somehow I feel there's an alternate timeline where this was her fourth.

I imagine they'd have to accept it. All but one of the containers in the middle row--and, more importantly, both of the containers featured in the close-up--are of udon. (For that matter, at least the first two on the bottom row are curry noodles.)

That was the exact reason I had switched. Saw "law," singular, in the clue and thought, "Wait, why would it be those if the clue specified a singular?"

Ashley certainly is making the most of her second chance, isn't she? She didn't strike me as a particularly strong player at first, but yesterday and today proved that she could probably hold her own for another day or two.

Too bad Debrah had to go home after that strong game.
I was impressed by her get on School's Out. Even though that song is over 40 years old, she didn't look 'youthful' enough to know Alice Cooper songs. Makes me feel really old. My astonishment meter pegged though, when she came up with Hank Greenburgh. I would have bit so hard with Ty Cobb on that clue. Neg bait IMO.

I'm OK with Ashley winning more games but I have one complaint about her. Does every response have to be in the form of a guess? It sounds like she is doubting herself on nearly every answer and this is starting to drive me batty.

No, because I've been to the Pez Museum in Connecticut. To date, it's the single only time a billboard on the side of the expressway has actually gotten me to pull off during a trip and visit the tourist trap.

Probably, yeah. Frea is one of the acceptable other names of Frigg and there's some debate over whether the two are the same or at least have quite a bit of overlap.

Hahaha. Apart from playing for the Tigers in the early 20th century, it would be hard to think of two players less alike than Cobb and Greenberg.
