The game did Claudia no favors with capable opponents and material on the slightly easier side than normal. Credit to her for hanging in there and still having a shot entering the FJ! round. The buzzer was clearly a liability for Claudia and she did well having the honor of playing three games.

DHK says he ran the NATIONAL ANTHEMS before he saw the clues. Yeah, I hope that $400 did not cause any problems. :)

Omani comes up in a lot of crossword puzzles, so I got Oman right just by Pavloving Middle East - Sultante.

Vivek would have won on many other nights. 1/2 on DDs and 0/1 on FJ! clues was too much to overcome with Sarah able to stay in range.

The only precalls I reminded myself to check on were Thoreau & Emerson . From there I considered the possibilities wide open and decided against doing a bunch of brainstorming.

Teeth - west - Holliday was instant. Claudia and Vivek did not know the dots, so Colgate and Walter Reed are as good as countless other attempts at a guess. Sarah knew Doc and took the title with the sole solve. There should be no complaining about that clue whether a hit or miss.

The TRIPLE RHYME TIME category seemed rough to process in real time. I ran the category, but I'm not sure how I'd have done in a buzzer race under the lights. I suspect by the time I'd gotten to the third item in the list, I'd have forgotten what the first thing was.

Does Bond specify a vodka martini in the movies? If not, wouldn't a bartender default to gin? The clue was easy enough that it didn't make me stumble. Apparently in the book Casino Royale he specifies a mix of gin and vodka, “A dry martini. One. In a deep champagne goblet. Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.” Sounds vile.

Alex really sounded disappointed when Sarah explained that the Church of St. Denis is one of the earliest examples of Gothic architecture. He said "ok" in a way that heavily implied the "whatever" as he moved on to interview Vivek.

Speaking of Vivek, tomorrow's contestants dodged a bullet when he lost. He seemed sharp and fast.

I blanked on the category for the DD that asked about the 1745 tune that got used by Haydn and Britten. I still reasoned my way to the correct response. Vivek's response of "God Save the QUEEN" is obviously acceptable, but non-preferred in my opinion.

Under THEY DIRECTED THEMSELVES when Argo came up, did anyone else quack/honk AFFLECK!!! repeatedly?

Re movies: Yes.

Started writing Greeley because 'Go West' but thought better with the dental bit and got Doc Holliday well in time.

Also, yes, the Vesper Lind as printed is vile. At minimum use a better freaking gin... Gordon's. *gag*

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Unfortunately, I hurt my back almost immediately after returning from LA. It's a long story, but until this week I couldn't have watched Jeopardy

Thanks for the compliment. I have been really tough on myself since the taping day, but I was facing two tough opponents and didn't do myself any favors by underbetting that first DD. I also knew the Omani anthem, but just let myself overthink it. And FJ just hit a complete hole in my knowledge.

I actually think this category would have been easier in the studio than at home, which is very unusual. It takes a while to parse all the info and by that time the clue is off our TV screen, but in the studio you can stare at the clue as long as you need. And those were clues you did need to physically see the words for a while. Also, the long pause Alex takes before reading the clue is edited out giving the contestants more time than the TV audience.

Sorry to hear you were incapacitated, Vivek! The second-guessing fades over time. I definitely kicked myself over things I thought I knew but was too chicken to ring in on. I meant to bet a lot bigger on DDs before I got on stage too, but those lights do strange things to you.

It was surprisingly hard. I had the same experience you did, particularly with "peach, (now I can't remember the second thing), bleach".

I do quite like it. I had one tonight!
Alex really sounded disappointed when Sarah explained that the Church of St. Denis is one of the earliest examples of Gothic architecture. He said "ok" in a way that heavily implied the "whatever" as he moved on to interview Vivek.
I was really thrown by that interview with me! I didn't expect it to be so hostile (I also didn't expect it to be about my research).

I agree. I meant to say "God Save The King," but "God Save the Queen" came out.

The lights and being yelled at during rehearsal for dawdling. ;)

I was very surprised by Alex's behaviour there, especially the sotto voce addition of "just wanted to get that out there". He really did get political in a way that's completely unnecessary on a quiz show.

I felt that you played an excellent game, and with a different FJ you would have been the winner. It was just a shame about that last DD, which narrowed the gap between you and Sarah. You were a pleasure to watch and I was hoping you'd be a multiple-day champion.

My mixed drink of choice is the gimlet, and I've found that if I don't specify, bartenders in this day and age will default to vodka.

Sorry it didn't work out, DefCon4. You played very well.

Like many others, I negged on Australia and Oman. On the latter, I Pavloved sultan-->Brunei, rang in, realized I was in the wrong part of the world, scrambled, blurted out Bahrain, then immediately realized it was Oman.

FJ was well-written. I don't see many movies, but I really liked Val Kilmer in Tombstone, so I was well-qualified to be this clue's huckleberry.

Yeah, all of the necessary ingredients were there. This is at least the fourth huckleberry reference I've gotten, but I've never seen Tombstone! When we were walking back to the green room, Maggie said "You'll never see Tombstone again the same way!"

Leander wrote:I'm impressed with anyone who got the Omani National Anthem.
How about if the melody of the Omani anthem pops into your head when you read the title and you're trying to identify it that way? (While fighting off "Brunei" because, as pointed out, it's also a sultanate, and mentions the Sultan in the title of its anthem, but is not in the Middle East.) Surprisingly, I got it just under the wire. I commend the writers for a well chosen $2000 clue, tough enough to be a stand and stare, with enough hints to make it accessible if you know what to look for.
Leander wrote:I was trying to think of authors for FJ, drew a blank and tried for dentists and came up with Holliday. Who would have thought he wrote a thesis?
Don't all doctors, even in the 19th century, have to?

I also guessed New Zealand, because I knew that their flag has the Southern Cross on it.
As does Brazil's. And Samoa's. But really, the lyrics don't say there has to be a southern cross on the flag, though. (Also, I wonder how many know that the "Beneath our radiant Southern Cross" line is in the less-heard second verse of the anthem?), so any southern hemisphere nation qualifies.

Hell, when I heard the first two notes, I thought at first it was Portugal (they have the same first two notes). Thankfully I waited to ring in.

And, yes, that would have been a TDD for me without a second thought. However, as I probably would have started with the category, I wouldn't have had much to TDD with. :(

No. PhDs write theses, but MDs, DDSes, DVMs, etc., are considered professional degrees, and their holders don't write theses, and sometimes no papers at all.

You're joking, right? They wouldn't neg for Otello/Othello, especially since the clue referenced Shakespeare. It's a nuance of pronunciation anyway. My commentary pertained to how slowly Domingo read the clue.

Sorry it didn't work out for you, DefCon. You were playing just as you should, and were looking really good. The Jeopardy gods can be cruel sometimes.

Alex really was in awkward mode last night, wasn't he?

I guess I was the only one to guess Teddy Roosevelt for FJ??

I didn't feel confident since the category would have likely referenced "presidents" for TR to be correct, and I had no idea if the year was right for TR to have written a thesis (it wasn't) but it seemed like a really esoteric clue so it was the best I could come up with in 30 seconds.
