Game Recap for Show #7322, 2016-06-14

CONTESTANTS
Zane Dowty, a pharmacist from Denver, Colorado
Dana Thurmond Bruno, a humanities professor from Orlando, Florida
Hunter Appler, an attorney originally from Mount Airy, North Carolina (whose 4-day cash winnings total $93,001)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thanks, Johnny. Is there a wall on Jeopardy! for our champions? Does it happen after you win five games? Does it happen when you get close to winning $100,000? Hunter will have something to say about that, perhaps, as he faces Dana and Zane today. Good luck to all three of you. Here we go into the Jeopardy! Round. And here we go into these categories, starting off with...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
HISTORY REPEATS (4/5, including 1 missed Daily Double)
THE ENTERTAINER (5/5)
PATENTS (5/5)
BIBLICAL ART (5/5)
WHERE'S THAT STATE SCHOOL? (3/5)
"EFF" FOR EFFORT (4/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Hunter: 13 R, 1 W (including 1 DD)
Dana: 10 R, 0 W
Zane: 3 R, 1 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 3
Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $2,200

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Dana: $3,400
Hunter: $3,200
Zane: $400

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: There are crazes and fads from the past which, if resurrected today, may cause problems for us. Zane Dowty, you have discovered that with regard to one of those crazes.

Zane: Yeah, break dancing.

Alex: Okay.

Zane: I found a new use for it.

Alex: How?

Zane: Sometimes I have to pick the kids up from school. Teenage girls, they like to socialize. So in order to get them to come, I start break dancing in front of their friends. They wanna get rid of me as fast as possible, so makes them get to the car and go.

Alex: I got--I got news for you. Take it from me. Anything you do is going to embarrass them.

[Laughter]

Alex: That's a good one, though. All right.

Alex: Dana Thurmond Bruno from Orlando, Florida.

Dana: Yes.

Alex: Has a cockatiel.

Dana: Yes.

Alex: ...who speaks.

Dana: Yes, he says a lot of things. His most famous phrase is, "I'm Batman."

[Laughter]

Dana: And he says it in a very gravelly voice.

Alex: Really?

Dana: [Gravelly voice] I'm Batman. [Normal voice] Yeah, it's really good.

Alex: Are there any obscenities that come from his--

Dana: No, we don't--no, no, no.

Alex: No?

Dana: Better not be. No.

Alex: You have owned this cockatiel its entire life?

Dana: Yes, I got it when he was a little baby. And he plays peek-a-boo and he says--he says, "Charge!" as he flies, so...

Alex: Okay, good for you.

Alex: Hunter Appler is our champion. He is an attorney. And you were really into aliens as a kid, right?

Hunter: Oh, sure. I loved The X-Files, aliens, UFOs. And so we took a family trip out West. And, uh, took a three-hour detour to go see Area 51. And by "see it," I mean go right up to the edge, and not cross over, 'cause there's a sign that says, "we can shoot you if you cross this line."

Alex: Really?

Hunter: Yeah. "Use of deadly force is authorized." So we stayed on the right side of the line.

Alex: But does it identify itself as Area 51?

Hunter: Not by name. No. No.

Alex: No. Just the fence and saying, "You're gonna get shot if you go beyond this point."

Hunter: [Laughs] Something like that.

Alex: All right, that would stop me, I'll tell you.

[Laughter]

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Hunter found the Daily Double on the 23rd clue. Hunter had $4,600, Dana had $4,800, and Zane was at $1,600. Hunter wagered $500.

HISTORY REPEATS $1000: Like Anne Boleyn, this fifth wife of Henry VIII was also accused of adultery & beheaded
(Alex: Hunter?)
(Hunter: I don't know.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
"EFF" FOR EFFORT $800: The audacity! The shameless boldness! You have the this to respond like that?!

WHERE'S THAT STATE SCHOOL? $600: They're Russian around & having a capital time at the University of Idaho in this city

WHERE'S THAT STATE SCHOOL? $800: Read up on your Faulkner on the main campus of the University of Mississippi in this city
(Zane: What is... Jackson?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Hunter: $7,300
Dana: $5,400
Zane: $800

LET'S GDANSK (4/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Hunter: 13 R, 1 W
Dana: 11 R (including 2 rebounds and 1 DD), 2 W (including 1 DD)
Zane: 1 R, 1 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 4
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $6,000

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Dana snagged the next Daily Double on the 3rd clue. Hunter had $8,900, Dana had $5,800, and Zane was at $800. Dana wagered $2,000.

HEROES $800: From the Latin for "battlefield" comes this word for a fighter or dog who has beaten all challengers
(Dana: I don't know. I'm...)
(Alex: Take a guess.
(Dana: What is, uh, [*]?)
(Alex: That's right.)
(Dana: Oh! Ah...)
[Applause]
(Dana: Oh, wow! I guessed.)
(Alex: You see, I've noticed quite often that our players know more than they are ready to admit.)

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Dana who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 24th clue. Hunter had $16,100, Dana had $17,000, and Zane was at $1,200. Dana wagered $1,000.

FASHION $1200: David Bowie was a style icon of this look, from the Greek for "male & female in one"
(Dana: What is hermaphrodite?)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
HEROES $1200: Founded in Manchester in 1821, this newspaper with a heroic name is one of England's most influential

DAVID BOWIE $1200: In memory of the late, great Bowie, she performed a medley of his hits at the Grammys in 2016

DAVID BOWIE $2000: David Bowie's first U.S. No. 1 album, it was released on his birthday in 2016, just 2 days before his death

LET'S GDANSK $1600: In 1308 these German knights seized control of Danzig, aka Gdansk, & held the city until 1466
(Dana: What are the Templar?)

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Hunter: $20,100
Dana: $18,000
Zane: $1,200

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
CONTEMPORARIES

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Shore's Conjecture.
Hunter: Wager $15,901 to cover Dana, but no more than $17,699 so as not to fall behind Zane's doubled score. If you're a fan of shoretegic wagering, you might risk $13,501.
Dana: Since you're within 4/5ths of Hunter's score, you should wager between $4,201 (venusian) and $13,800 (martian), beating Hunter's maximum safe bet of the difference between your scores.
Zane: Too bad for you, Zane, your score is less than Hunter's score minus Dana's score. Unless they both commit an egregious wagering error, you've no hope of moving into first place. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
In an 1864 letter, he congratulated Abraham Lincoln on reelection on behalf of "the workingmen of Europe"

FINAL SCORES
Zane: $1,200 + $1,000 = $2,200 (Who is Marx?) (3rd place)
Dana: $18,000 + $10,000 = $28,000 (Who is Marx?) (2nd place)
Hunter: $20,100 + $15,901 = $36,001 (Who is Marx?) (93002-day champion: $36,001)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $8,200

GAME DYNAMICS

Hunter: 27/59 = .458
Dana: 22/60 = .367
Zane: 5/58 = .086
Team: 54/63 = .857

REBEL, REBEL $400: Mark Twain, who in 1861 briefly joined a pro-secessionist unit of this state's guard
(Zane: What is... Mississippi?)

Can we poll "effrontery"? That was my only miss in the category, and I found it leagues more obscure than "efficiency apartment".

Lach Trash: Moscow.

WLT Berkeley, idol, or solidarity in the top box?

I know that David Bowie is a person, but could tell you literally nothing about him. None of his songs ring a bell to me.

Somehow "ordinal" got me to "Second", but not to "Second Life". That was a derp.

"Nondenominational" felt way shorter than 17 letters to me. I hate clues that require you to mentally count out that many letters, or just take a flyer and hope that whatever word comes out is the right length.

No guess on FJ! I thought Karl Marx was way later than Lincoln. What was the tipoff anyway?

A thrilling slugfest (but my god, those DD wagers...), so of course we get an anticlimactic, easy peasy FJ.

Welcome to the TOC, Hunter (you were in yesterday, at this rate, but now it's official).

Congrats to Hunter on his fifth win. I had 49 correct responses including these triple stumpers: Moscow, Oxford, Manchester Guardian, Lady Gaga, and Blackstar. I also got the missed Daily Doubles of Catherine Howard and androgynous, and I got FJ.

For the first time in aeons I ran a category, EFF. Effrontery is frequently prefaced with "bare faced"- or maybe only in the Brit novels I devoured as a kid!

Alex absolutely embarrassed that poor lady in the middle with his question about whether her parrot could spout obscenities. The cross and the fact that she pretty much ran the Biblical art category should have been a warning.

What a game though. I wonder if that wrong DD answer tilted the game away from her...

The FJ category had me worried it would be something trickier, where you have to do a bit more mental gymnastics to think of whose lifetimes might have overlapped.

Here's a potential clue in that category that I just made up, based on a fact I've read once or twice.

I hate when the writers throw in words like "British", as if buskers are not found anywhere else in the world.

And when you have a one in five chance, TAKE A GUESS!!!

Hilariously, I had an almost identical game to yesterday, only with more LT.

34R/1W
Coryat-$25,600
LT-Catherine Howard, Moscow, effrontery, Teutonic Knights, androgynous, Lady Gaga
DD-3/3
FJ-Instaget

Those DD bets were very poor. I like and root for him, but it's surprising that Hunter is now a 5-day champion with such anti-value bets.

Also, I think Dana let nerves get the better of her on the last DD. Had she kept calm and double-checked her answer for a few more seconds, she likely would switched the answer to the correct "androgynous". Unfortunately, she still would have been exactly $100 short.
