Re: Millionaire 2016-17 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]
Hi, all! I haven't posted much, but I've been on the boards for several years, and always enjoy reading the discussions. Next week on Millionaire, it will be Teacher Appreciation Week; I will appear on the Tuesday and Wednesday episodes (May 2 and 3). I'm really looking forward to seeing these finally! They were taped way back in August. I will come on at the end of the Tuesday episode and carry over until Wednesday. I hope that you enjoy!

I should add that I was a Jeopardy! champion back in the Clinton years, which is what brought me here in the first place.

We would love to have your five regular play games in the Archive if you have a copy digitized, on DVD, on VHS or has been teased with Jeff Richmond, kinescope.

I've got the games on VHS; I've been meaning to convert them properly to DVD (I had converted them years ago, onto discs which my current players don't recognize). Once I've converted them, I'd be happy to try to get them to you.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2017 10:19 amWe would love to have your five regular play games in the Archive if you have a copy digitized, on DVD, on VHS or has been teased with Jeff Richmond, kinescope.
Out of curiosity, what's the Jeff Richmond/kinescope reference? I'm guessing that someone filmed a game off the TV monitor, but I'm sure I'm missing something here . . .
Oh, and hi, by the way!

Let me get back to you once I've located the tapes; they're in the house somewhere. Once I've got them, I might make a copy myself (I've been meaning to do that for years, anyhow), which I can then share with you.
We'll figure this out; thanks, while I'm at it, for all that you do (this board, for instance.)

Jeff posts here and in looking for some of his games from 1988 there were jokes about his having played so long ago the games may be on kinescope. Or kinetoscope. One of those oldie type technology things.skepper wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2017 10:32 amI've got the games on VHS; I've been meaning to convert them properly to DVD (I had converted them years ago, onto discs which my current players don't recognize). Yes, Myron is just as capable to receive a copy of your games no matter the format and get them into the Archive. No rush and no competition. Whatever you are able to do is great.

Seems like it. The only earlier ones with more than one are 1992 (leszekp and JyV'92) and 1990 (season6 and sberman/89-90), I think.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2017 4:12 pmTo anyone with such memories: Is 1996 the earliest TOC year with all three finalists having posted on one of the message boards dedicated to J!?
Edit: Bob Blake has a Sony board username (Canuckistan) mentioned on J! Archive, it turns out.

nlw44 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 24, 2017 1:09 pm So I just watched today's (4/24/17) ep and feel the need to comment on one question in particular...Spoiler
I don't have the exact wording, but basically it was asking which of the given instruments would lend itself to improving the upper airway strength of a player. The choices were a) harpsichord, b) musical saw, c) didgeridoo, and d) timpani.
I listened to this one with the sound muted, so I don't know exactly what the contestant was thinking. But I do know that she used her 50/50 (leaving harpsichord and didgeridoo) then her "ask the audience" (15% harpsichord, 85% didgeridoo.) Two lifelines used in what should have been a dead easy question if she'd used just a little logic. Honestly, the only one that uses the airways in any way is, of course, the didgeridoo, so the whole thing just hit my "rant-o-meter" at a very high level.
Spoiler
And why use your 50/50 if you're not hoping to eliminate one of two options – just go straight for the audience

Re: Millionaire 2016-17 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]
This was a $10,000 question on the 4/28 episode:
A 2016 study found that the women of Latvia are the world’s tallest, with an average height of 170cm, or approximately what in feet & inches?
A: 5 feet, 5 inches
B: 5 feet, 7 inches
C: 5 feet, 9 inches
D: 5 feet, 11 inches

A: 5 feet, 5 inches
B: 5 feet, 7 inches
C: 5 feet, 9 inches

Spoiler
The contestant, Steven Chapin, (with no lifelines remaining) tried to work out some math and arrived at 5' 8", but that was not a choice. He did the math again and locked in 5' 11".
Spoiler
He left with $5,000 as the correct answer was 5' 7". There must have been the smell of wood burning as I worked out my answer using what I knew of the metric system.
100cm = 1 meter; 1 meter = about 39 inches. To calculate 70cm I divided the 39 inches by ten to get 3.9 for 10cm. I rounded up 3.9 to 4 and multiplied by 7 to get 28.
28+39=67
67 inches = 5 feet, 7 inches.
Hey, whatever works.

That's one way. Another is to know that 183 cm is 6 feet, and get a conversion that way. What type of arithmetic did the contestant do to screw up so badly?MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Fri Apr 28, 2017 3:54 pm This was a $10,000 question on the 4/28 episode:Next:Spoiler

He should have rejected 5' 11" anyways, as that is absurdly tall for the average woman of any country.
As someone who is very interested in average heights, I question how accurate the Millionaire question is. For starters, I can't find any good, sound data on average heights in Latvia. Let alone from 2016. Wikipedia doesn't have, and neither do any other sites I've searched. What was their source?
However, I do know that Netherlands has the tallest people, on average, in the world. And some studies have found that their women (between certain ages, obviously; too old or young would skew the average downwards) are an average of 171 centimeters, taller than the cited number for Latvia.
Others claim 5' 7" and 170 cm, the same figure.

Having read the article and study, this leads to more questions than ever. For instance, the complete list linked to in the article, when adjusted for women born in 1996, shows Dutch women 1st...and Latvian women only 4th, behind Estonia and Belgium.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Fri Apr 28, 2017 11:19 pmhttp://www3.imperial.ac.uk/newsandevent ... 6-18-41-53IronNeck wrote: ↑Fri Apr 28, 2017 11:15 pm As someone who is very interested in average heights, I question how accurate the Millionaire question is. So what the hell was the data this (very poorly written) "research" paper accessed to for Latvia that one can't find elsewhere, and why is it completely inconsistent with a related site looking at that same time period, from 1896 to 1996?

Re: Millionaire 2016-17 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]
I know when I was there, thoughts about the writing style completely left my head; but if you can keep calm and carry on, some advice for future contestants:
This type of question with a number answer is almost always B or C; so you can eliminate A and D. Usually the numbers aren't this close together either.
For this one, I knew a meter was around 39 inches so I rounded up to 40 and multiplied by 1.7. Of course I came up with answer C there, but knowing I overestimated, that pulled me back to B for the correct answer.
