CONTESTANTS
Denver Wade, an English teacher from Westfield, Indiana
Vivek Ravishanker, a freelance consultant from Higganum, Connecticut
Thea Lawton, a nonprofit resource development specialist from Anchorage, Alaska (whose 1-day cash winnings total $24,400)
OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Hi, folks. Welcome to our show. People often ask me, "What do the contestants and you talk about at the end of each game?" Well, at the end of yesterday's program, just after Thea had won the game, I walked up to her and I said, "Boy, you really came to play today." But that might also apply to our two challengers today, Vivek and Denver. Let's see how it all works out. Good luck. Here we go.

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Denver Wade is from Indiana. He's an English teacher, but he taught American football in Sicily. Where?
Denver: That's right. I coached for the Catania Elephants, an American football team based out of Sicily. There's a big subculture of football lovers over there, and they recruit American players and coaches.
Alex: Oh, good. Must be a lot of fun.
Denver: Amazing.
Alex: Vivek Ravishanker, from Higganum?
Vivek: That's right.
Alex: Higganum, Connecticut. Used to live in Las Vegas. And you were very close to a workout area for Cirque du Soleil performers, I understand.
Vivek: Yeah, my office was right outside the Cirque du Soleil, and so you can imagine the kinds of folks you're going to run into in the cafeteria for lunch and dinner. Acrobats, circus performers, blackjack dealers, so on and so forth.
Alex: Uh-huh.
Vivek: It was a great experience.
Alex: Good for you.
Alex: Thea Lawton is our champion. She is from Anchorage, Alaska. And every summer, she and her family go dipnetting?
Thea: We do. You have to be an Alaska resident.
Alex: Ah.
Thea: But basically, you're putting on kind of a Neoprene dry suit, got a net on a long metal stick. You wade out into the surf, and you scoop up the salmon before they can get back from the sea to the river.
Alex: I went fishing for salmon with my family a few years ago, and we caught a couple of fish that were about this big.
[Alex gestures with his hands shoulder-width apart]
Alex: And I worked it out. It's about $780 a pound.
[Laughter]
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Denver found the Daily Double on the 25th clue. Thea had $4,400, Vivek had $3,600, and Denver was at $2,600. Denver made it a True Daily Double, wagering $2,600.

(Alex: Gosh, you're so close. Who is his nemesis, [*].)
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
THAT'S AWFUL GRIMM $400: The final words in "The Death of the Little" this, a female domestic fowl-- "and then everyone was dead"

Re: Tuesday, November 1, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Vivek had chance to bet enough on the last DD to make sure he had the lead entering the FJ! round. By not doing that he cost himself about $15,000.
Thea had the lapse of phrasing yet still led entering the FJ! round to make that gaffe not matter.
Denver did not know the famous Aaron Burr ad and ended up with the better of two possible outcomes getting the $2000 prize.
France? I can see someone guessing countries in the A-B-C range, heck even Denmark. Thea's miss I did not see coming.
On my paper I wrote Albania and later added Belgium just to have a B country in there for consideration since my other A option of Afghanistan was continentally eliminated. It was not something I knew for sure and instead was one of those to stick with the best guess.

Some odd misses on the "purchase known as something else in Mexico". Louisiana and Alaska?
I got Aaron Burr, though it took me a bit. I said it properly first and then corrected myself as if I had a mouthful of peanut butter.

Re: Tuesday, November 1, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Thea foreshadowed her expensive error on Gwyneth Paltrow yesterday with a phrasing error that was not corrected, probably because her answer itself was wrong. She was able to recover from that today and finish in first place over her greatly upsurging challenger. But then it didn't matter because of her massive blowing of FJ.
Have people really forgotten what Warsaw Pact was? Thea was obviously around for that.

That Got Milk? commercial is one of my all time favorites. It was directed by Michael Bay.

Right, as I was saying, Instaget FJ. Pretty sure Albania is alphabetically first among European nations overall, without all the qualifiers. Not sure why her "just write something" WAG was ABCDE France...

Right, as I was saying, Instaget FJ. Pretty sure Albania is alphabetically first among European nations overall, without all the qualifiers. Not sure why her "just write something" WAG was ABCDE France...

Rather harsh and most likely untrue.floridagator wrote:Have people really forgotten what Warsaw Pact was? Thea was obviously around for that.

Ugh, Hamilton. You are too stuck in my head. In retrospect, that should've been an easy get for me, but I made the same mistake that the contestant did.
I wasn't 100% on Albania, but it seemed likely enough, I was (almost) certain it wasn't Afghanistan, and I couldn't think of any other countries ahead of it alphabetically. France seemed like such a random guess, though. Too many other countries to consider earlier in the alphabet before I'd have ever hit France.

It only ended in 1991. It's probably true.econgator wrote:Rather harsh and most likely untrue.floridagator wrote:Have people really forgotten what Warsaw Pact was? Thea was obviously around for that.

Re: Tuesday, November 1, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Hi all -
I'll first try to respond to a few things... then I have something else about the game that I have a real question about...
Mark Barrett noted Denver didn't know the famous "got milk" Aaron Burr ad. Well, I had no memory of it either Thanks for jpr281 for posting the link so I could see what it was all about. Didn't really like it; guess I just don't often find people getting the "short end" very funny.
floridagator wondered if folks have forgotten what the Warsaw Pact was. Unfortunately, I sadly note that many folks don't have much memory for history. And it's easy to forget if you are years removed from history classes or don't have stuff refreshed somehow. I know I forget some events that happened that I certainly lived through and must have noted at the time, but if I haven't thought about them for a while... poof! I don't know Thea's age but I certainly did find her choosing France very puzzling.
Now ... what I found I really had a question about was: in city nicknames, there was the clue "City of David", correct? If I'm not mistaken, Vivek answered Jerusalem and it was accepted. I thought the "City of David" was Bethlehem. Anyone else note this or have any thoughts?

Given that the Warsaw Pact was around until 1991, I sure hope so.econgator wrote:Rather harsh and most likely untrue.floridagator wrote:Have people really forgotten what Warsaw Pact was? Thea was obviously around for that.

Yeah, well... at least she didn't say Argentina!econgator wrote:Especially given Warsaw Pact.MarkBarrett wrote:France? I can see someone guessing countries in the A-B-C range, heck even Denmark. Thea's miss I did not see coming.
43R, instaget; 5 LT: Hen; Diet of Worms; 'Hippocrepis' > horseshoe; morphine ex opium (grows around Emerald City, remember?!); 1853 Gadsden Purchase.
BTW TYVM for posting the milk ad I don't think I ever saw it! Must've been under a rock... looks like 80's. I was all like; "WTH is the TOM here?!?"
The corridors of my mind are plastered with 3M Post-It notes!

Warsaw Pact only ended when Soviet Union imploded in 1989-91. Thea (as opposed to today's millennial contestants) would have heard about Warsaw Pact countries in the news as an adult.econgator wrote:Rather harsh and most likely untrue.floridagator wrote:Have people really forgotten what Warsaw Pact was? I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Really well-played game right up until that Subaru wager from the lead. I'm not sure what was worse: that wager or the response. Sometimes it's better to just leave it blank. On the other hand, excellent wager by the new champ.
I thought there was a lot of negbait before the first break. I had $1400 then and could've very easily had $0.

Hoping for a third lap

Almost overthought this FJ, remembering a split by Albania from the Soviet Bloc and its close relations with China for a while, which led me to think maybe it was never a member of the Warsaw Pact. However my second choice, Bulgaria, would be after Belgium alphabetically in NATO, so I crossed my fingers and went with Albania.

41 right.
NASCAR (4), Geo (3), Ads (3), Grimm (1), Top (4), E-I (5)
Reptiles (4), 19th Century (4), Miss (4), Pulitzer (4), Word (1), Kiss (4)
Lach Trash: Worms, Gadsden Purchase; DD: Aaron Burr
First thought was Austria, but then I remembered that Albania was 2nd alphabetically in the world, and that it made more sense with the Warsaw Pact.
