Re: Spoiler and poll about an $800 clue in Tuesday, 2/7/17 game
I live in Northern CA, and have always known those as Denver Boots.
I lived in Oregon for 18 years, and that's what folks refer to them as up there, too. I think just about any Oregonian would laugh if someone used the term "Oregon Boot".
Then again... I doubt French folks call French fries "French fries"...

I've lived in Los Angeles for 33 years, but I learned "Denver boot" in Massachusetts before that (they were introduced in Boston in 1981). I honestly haven't paid attention to whether people ever call them anything else.

I'd always heard them called Denver Boots.
You missed a poll option -- "I've had my car booted." (No, I never have would have been my response, but it would have been fun to have polled.)

Lived most of my life in the NY metro area, in all three states, plus 9 years in Chicago, and have only heard it referred to as a boot.

This - best I could have said was boot jack.Plactus wrote:I live in Texas, and I've seen them. Only name I've heard from them is "boot," and was sure that wouldn't be enough, so I clammed. Never heard "Denver boot."

I think that parking boot should have demanded a "be more specific" at best but, honestly, I just really don't think that's an acceptable correct answer. I recognize that there are quirky colloquialisms that tend to be regional, but this situation to me genuinely feels like people never bothering to learn the term "wheel camp" or its nickname the "Denver boot."
If a clue were looking for "Jersey barrier" and someone responded "traffic wall," I'd fully expect them to be ruled incorrect.

Maybe it's just local to us, but here in Cowboy Country, a boot jack is something you use to help take your boots off. You step on it and hook the heel into a yoke. Helps keep the cow poop off your hands and the kitchen floor as well.gamawire wrote:This - best I could have said was boot jack.Plactus wrote:I live in Texas, and I've seen them. Yes they did"And you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?" "They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with cheese?"
(Of course, I don't think that film ever answered what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in What.)
Vincent: And you know what they call a... a... a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?
Jules: They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with cheese?
Vincent: No man, they got the metric system. They wouldn't know what the fuck a Quarter Pounder is.
Jules: Then what do they call it?
Vincent: They call it a Royale with cheese.
Jules: A Royale with cheese. What do they call a Big Mac?
Vincent: Well, a Big Mac's a Big Mac, but they call it le Big-Mac.
Jules: Le Big-Mac. Ha ha ha ha. What do they call a Whopper?
Vincent: I dunno, I didn't go into Burger King.
In France and other French-speaking countries, fried potatoes are formally pommes de terre frites, but more commonly pommes frites, patates frites, or simply frites. The word "aiguillettes" (from the French needle or laces) or allumettes (match stick) is used when the French fries are very small and thin.

I'm not really sure this is something one could reasonably expected "...bothering to learn." You've either heard the term "Denver Boot" used for the device or you haven't.guessonguessonguess wrote:but this situation to me genuinely feels like people never bothering to learn the term "wheel camp" or its nickname the "Denver boot."

Paris ain't no country I've ever heard of! Do they speak English in Paris?macrae1234 wrote:That doesn't make senseThat's Paris, not What.
Sorry about that. Getting back to the topic at hand ...
I knew Denver boot, possibly from that long-ago Simpsons episode.
I wonder if they would have accepted Rhino, the brand name of the wheel immobilizer favored by the campus police at my alma mater. Possibly not, as a different company manufactures Rhino footwear, including boots.

Fair enough. I err on the side of caution, but the thread is clearly labeled for spoilers, so I may be over-reacting.rpg wrote:Is that actually necessary? The title of the thread says it contains spoilers for today's game, I don't see why you would come in here if you wanted to avoid spoilers.MinnesotaMyron wrote:Please keep other spoilers out of this thread.twelvefootboy wrote:I've seen them. They are called boots. That's all. They go on your tires, or your wheels, but I still haven't heard "tire boot", or "wheel boot". I've mostly heard it as a verb/participle, you get your car booted. (A boot block, in our local parlance, is when the Fire Department collects money at intersections for United Way or something like that. They collect the money in their boot. The practice has been stopped, due to accidents/injuries.)
Anyhow, I stayed clam, as I'm pretty sure the category title cannot be the answer to the clue. I've pavlov'd too many times to think it will work this time.
Any Law Enforcement pros on here? What is your jargon?
I didn't mind missing REDACTED thought it was a cute clue.

I don't think I've ever heard it called anything but just a boot. I have perhaps heard it as parking boot, but I m certain I have never heard it called a Denver boot.

Never heard of "Denver" boot or "Oregon" boot. Didn't clam; guessed "brake" 'cause forgot category.
