Spoiler and poll about an $800 clue in Tuesday, 2/7/17 game

Post by MarkBarrett »

BOOTS $800: In 1958 Frank Marugg received a patent for a wheel clamp for "use in immobilizing a vehicle"; we now call it this

There was a request to poll this clue and to also determine how it broke down by the board member's hometown. I have divided the regions by time zones as a lot of us already have ours towns shown next to the location line. With the various options it seemed like a good time to utilize the occasional one clue, same day poll instead of waiting for the weekend.

If you identify with more than one region of the country it's fine to check multiple zone boxes.

What happened on the show:
Spoiler
Parking boot was negged.
Oregon boot was negged.

Before the FJ! round played Alex said parking boot was acceptable for +$1600
The neg for Oregon boot was erased for +800
The correct response wanted was Denver boot.

Denver boot is the term I know and use from living in San Francisco.

NYC and I've never heard "Denver boot" in my life. I kinda mumbled "parking boot" but honestly I would just call it a boot.

Thanks for polling this!

Grew up in Florida, now live in California, and know that device as a "Denver boot," so I checked that option for both Eastern and Pacific.

I've probably heard the term Denver boot, but I just know the thing as a boot, so I clammed.

I have never seen one on a physical car, but I remember the term from when they initially started using them years ago.

If it hadn't been for the category, I would have said 'wheel clamp'. But given the category, I went with 'parking boot' as I'd vaguely heard something of that ilk.

I've definitely heard the term "boot", and have an idea of what it does, but were I to buzz and be prompted, not sure if I would've known what word to put in front of it. Certainly never heard of Denver, I suppose it's possible I could have guessed parking but hard to say.

Edit: haven't seen the show yet and did not realize the category name was boots. Given that I'd say I definitely would have clammed.

No guess. The only place I've ever seen one is in Zootopia.

The only place I've seen one is on those reality TV shows like "Parking Wars" (and that famous Simpsons episode where Homer visits New York (pre 9/11)), I'm pretty sure I haven't seen one in the flesh steel?

I've seen them. They are called boots. That's all. They go on your tires, or your wheels, but I still haven't heard "tire boot", or "wheel boot". I've mostly heard it as a verb/participle, you get your car booted. (A boot block, in our local parlance, is when the Fire Department collects money at intersections for United Way or something like that. They collect the money in their boot. The practice has been stopped, due to accidents/injuries.)

Anyhow, I stayed clam, as I'm pretty sure the category title cannot be the answer to the clue. I've pavlov'd too many times to think it will work this time.

Any Law Enforcement pros on here? What is your jargon?

I've heard the term Denver boot, but never would have recalled it.

I can't check any of the above boxes (except that I've seen a car booted) as I've only ever called it a "boot".

"in", not "and", unless that's why you missed it, in which case never mind. :)

I live in Texas, and I've seen them. Only name I've heard from them is "boot," and was sure that wouldn't be enough, so I clammed. Never heard "Denver boot."
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

I'd never heard the term Denver boot until today, but then again, I never heard it called a Denver omelet until I moved to the USA. ("Western omelette" in my Canadian family.)

I put Eastern for myself because, though I grew up in California, I'm oretty sure that I never saw or heard of a (Denver) boot until I'd relocated to the East.

Is that actually necessary? The title of the thread says it contains spoilers for today's game, I don't see why you would come in here if you wanted to avoid spoilers.

From Chicago area, but have lived in NYC and Kansas City as well, and I've never heard the term "Denver Boot" until today. I've only heard it referred to simply as a "boot." Not even a "parking boot", just a "boot."

I wasn't paying attention when Alex read the categories, so I just said "boot." Had I known the category I probably would have clammed, since I've never heard it referred to as anything other than just a boot. I know what a "Jersey Barrier" is, but never heard of a "Denver Boot." :)
