Yeah, I thought this was an ill-advised question. I don't know how a nailgun sounds different from, say, a high-powered staple gun? (And depending on where the mic is in relation to the device, it could sound louder or softer than a nail gun.)
Heck, I thought it was a cap gun real close to the mic...
Cap gun was actually my guess, too.
ETA: I don't remember what the actual category was, so maybe it didn't fit the category.
Thanks for the info about when the Naval Acadamey opened. I just thought it was funny his bet came right after they said when Douglas' book was published.
I'll just give the College Tourney this much of a kudo...easy or not, sweeping the week's FJs sure is a nice wittle ego boost (and ESPECIALLY after the past few weeks' slump). I still rank yesterday's Brasilia FJ the easiest, but today/tonight's Eiffel Tower certainly ranks right there with it.
Hmmm...now I'm wondering what a fusion of Bossanova/Brazilian Jazz and Hot Club/Parisian/Euro Jazz would sound like...

The Eiffel Tower was and is an amazing architectural and engineering achievement. To put it into perspective the Eiffel Tower is 986 feet tall compared to the Washington Monument at 555 feet tall. So it topped the previous tallest man-made structure in the world by nearly 400 feet and 80%. The Great Pyramid of Giza was completed in about 2560 BC and was 480 feet tall then. So in 4,000+ years the tallest man-made structure had only increased by less than 100 feet, then another 400 feet was tacked on in just a couple years!

I was thrown by USDA in the GOVERNMENT AGENCIES category because Agriculture was the only cabinet department in the category. Does a cabinet dept count as a govt agency? The website lists all the agencies and offices that comprise the USDA. Anyway, I thought USDA but went with FDA.
1800 English king really threw me, but I paused and clawed my way to George III.
Could not come up with relapse to save my life. Also went with tactile v.s tangible (what they were going for, I guess?)
What is the right pronunciation of Wiesel? Like weas-EL or like wise-EL?
NHO Casey Jones or crescent wrench.

I knew it was a nail gun entirely from its sound.
To anyone that's spent any amount of time near a construction sight in the last 25+ years, it's an unmistakable sound.

I just saw the show tonight, and am happy that the bad wagerers made it through.
The sound may be unmistakable, but it is also unidentifiable to the specificity required. I think the best you can say is that it is a pneumatic tool. They should have asked a BMS for stapler, and given it for saying 'pneumatic', or 'air' gun/stapler/nailer/hammer. Even a narrow crown stapler or brad nailer can sound just like this recording. The only wrong answer is a Ace T-50 stapler, because you don't hear the whang of the spring. I didn't even like the perfect tempo of the nailer recording, because you usually throw 3-4 quick rounds and re-position.
