After a 40-41 on YouTube for the first one, thought this was a 44-45 for real. Nope, it was another 40-41. I think that's 8 for real online tests in a row between 39 and 42. Maybe they will reward consistency.
Had "liqueur" for cognac, and my dictionary tells me a liqueur is a "usually sweetened alcoholic liquor (as brandy)." But I have a feeling that's probably not close enough. So 40.

Sorry, Jeff. I certainly wasn't trying to be insulting so I'll try to suppress these interior monologues in the future. What I was expressing was twofold: firstly, my shock at doing so well on the first two tests. Over the past 2-3 years, I usually get 42-45 right with a few 38s thrown in. Secondly, I was also expressing my Eeyore-like pessimism that I usually end up taking for real the test that is hardest for me. Apologies if that came out sounding condescending or humble-bragging. As for your LL stats, are you sure that I'm in the top 1%? It seems statistically improbable that I always end up in Rundles with 8-10 people who score better than me.jeff6286 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2017 12:48 amThis is absurd. Your Learned League stats are in the top 1%, an .800+ player with ONE category below .700 who's perennially contending for an A championship. I don't know if you're trying to be self-deprecating or just avoiding overconfidence but this comes off as really damn insulting to anyone who is really struggling to reach 35.

Around 33, depending on whether they accept some partial and/or misspelled responses.

Hah! Thanks (I think). I did get one audition about 4 years ago in Orlando. I thought that I did really well (and several others came up to me afterward saying the same thing) but no call. Interestingly, I never saw anyone from that Orlando audition on the show. Since that time, not a sniff.Setho wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2017 1:06 amNo need to be insulted. As impressive as Woof's stats are, he has made exactly as many appearances on the show as you have. A higher score on the test means absolutely nothing. Once you meet minimum standards to get an in person audition, its all about being lucky enough to win the lottery to get an in person audition and having a personality that is suitable for television. Sure Woof seems to be an incredibly knowledgeable person, but either he lacks the luck to get the in person audition or he is a complete dullard not suitable to appear on TV.jeff6286 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2017 12:48 amThis is absurd. 20 – 21ST CENTURY FICTION
DONNA TARTT WON A PULITZER FOR THIS NOVEL ABOUT A PAINTING OF A BIRD
I finally got around to reading THE SECRET HISTORY but will probably never get to THE GOLDFINCH
21 – STATE CAPITALS
IT’S THE CAPITAL OF PENNSYLVANIA
I ran the Harrisburg marathon in 2012, the year the NYC marathon was canceled in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy
45 – WHO’S TALKING IN SHAKESPEARE
HE SAYS, “FRIENDS, ROMANS, COUNTRYMEN, LEND ME YOUR EARS”
I knew this one cold, but it didn't hurt that I just saw Julius Caesar Monday night at Shakespeare in the Park (though Antony was a 'she' in this production)

Well, question percentage doesn't always directly correlate to rundle placement, there's the matter of how good you are a defense and how easy you are to defend, and obviously a lot of luck when it comes to who you play when.Woof wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2017 10:02 amSorry, Jeff. But for someone who is higher than Brad Rutter on the all-time question percentage rankings, I maintain that any fear of not passing the Jeopardy test is quite misplaced.

42 right. I missed Nikki Haley (the patriarchy caused me to not even consider it could be a woman, though it wouldn't have made a difference), bacon (guessed beef, although "little bits" had me questioning that), Cartier (those French explorers aren't straightened out in my mind; I guessed Joliet), Superstore (Megastore), 435 (FiveThirtyEight threw me off; I subtracted the number of senators but not the three D.C. electors that are part of that total, for 438), Ailey (could only think of Robbins, who wasn't black), Puccini (switched to Verdi, argh), and Trout (I could only think of Lincecum, who I know is a pitcher).

32 for me I think. I struggled with faking myself out on this one, as I instantly thought of Haley, Magellan, Rikki Tikki Tavi and then discarded all of them, and lost coin flips with Firestarter (after writing Carrie first), julius caesar, and Cotton Club. Doesn't help that I missed 6 of the 9 lit questions, the musical question, the opera question. I know my weakness is lit and the arts at least, and this test had just too many of those questions for me to do well. I'm usually also good with the homophone/rhyme time/alliterative clues, but barely got gores chores and blanked on the other 2. Next time!

42, playing for fun/practice. Missed Samson for Daniel, thinking of the Lion's Den (would have it with Delilah), Manchester by the Sea but knew it'd be popular so had a reasonable punt at this, Bahrain, Goldfinch, The Apollo (this needs to be Pavloved from Harlem Theater), Ailey, Plug and Play (second too late!) Baikal. Ended on a proud 22/25 streak, including a 15R within that.
Between the 30th (39) and last night's, I think these have been topics I feel very comfortable with on the whole, through interest, studies, and Trebekistan. Of course, which my intuition tells me I will do best on the Central test and worst on the Pacific for the second year in a row.
Personally, I'm happy I got a clue right in a subject I consider myself very weak in, plus the overall result. Still a strong reminder to really study some world bodies of water better than I do now though!

Dig up the relevant Good Eats episodes--there are about a half dozen on beer, wine, liquor, and their use either on their own or in recipes. Alton will give you enough of a booze primer to be able to handle 90% of the stuff that will ever come up in Potent Potables.Cat Hammarskjold wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2017 10:22 pmI guess I need to start studying potent potables.OKlibrarian wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2017 10:18 pmPretty sure Baikal is OK (that's what I put too, and I'm pretty sure "lake" was in the prompt), and Brandy is wine that was distilled and aged into a liquor, though I doubt they'd take "wine" as an answer since it's really seen as a spirit.Cat Hammarskjold wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2017 10:13 pm Depending on what might or might not be acceptable alternate answers, I got between 39 and 41. Played along with the video for fun, scored about 40. I was glad I took it for real Tuesday night instead. Hopefully this is the year Maggie gets tired of my auditions and puts me on to get it over with

Point taken, Jeff. And I confess to being quite bemused when I noted that I had a winning record against RutterB. As the LL72 Prelims make clear, Brad's greatness at J! is perhaps more a product of his God-like abilities with the signaling device than his very good (but not amazing) depth of trivia knowledge. Of course, the same could be said of JenningsK, too, just reinforcing the point that excellence at Jeopardy! and LL are not entirely congruent (yes, that was purposeful) skill sets.jeff6286 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2017 1:01 pmWell, question percentage doesn't always directly correlate to rundle placement, there's the matter of how good you are a defense and how easy you are to defend, and obviously a lot of luck when it comes to who you play when.Woof wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2017 10:02 amSorry, Jeff. Regarding your point about records and Q% not precisely correlating, I took a look at career Q% in my Rundle. There are 6 players (out of 26) who sport better career Q% than me, including our own bomtr. I haven't done an exhaustive survey of LLamas, but working from those numbers, I calculate that I am 7/232 players in Continental -- which, this season, seems to be middle of the pack in Q% strength and can be taken as representative of LL as a whole -- which puts me in the top 3% of LLamas.
Anecdotally, that feels about right. I know that there is a gulf that separates the truly elite trivia players (AP, Schlie, BlishS, BahnamanS, DhuwaliaR, et al.) from myself and I've had my ass handed to me enough to reinforce that impression. So, in future, I'll try to keep those pre-test jitters internal and not trouble Jboard with my own insecurities. As you can see in the 6/1 thread, I did just fine last night, although I did leave a few correct answers on the table.

Same here. So pissed at myself for blowing the Lama, Frost, mitral (answered "miter"), not guessing "Superstore" although the word came to me despite my utter lack of familiarity with the show,... Some good guesses for me over the 35 hump, though. GL to you!

Same on "Tutu." The Lama came to me just as time expired. Damn.ntndeacon wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2017 9:55 pm I got at least 36. However I have a couple of iffy answers. I said miter instead of mitral valve and morn/mourn. I was convinced after the first question that it was tutu. (Although only after the question...I missed the religious part until time) And National Geographic hit my head with a second left. That and brain farting on Henry Higgins perturbed me a mite.

Also, wasn't Anne Bronte/Acton Bell one of Roger Craig's famous back to back DD's?Magna wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2017 10:01 pmI agree. I'm guessing Baikal will be ok - I hope so! I would say that yes, it is a type of wine, and iirc, it can also be considered a subset, or further distillate, of champagne. Perhaps it's just the regional source pig the grapes used to make it. Off to Wiki...Cat Hammarskjold wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2017 10:13 pm Depending on what might or might not be acceptable alternate answers, I got between 39 and 41. Nope, not quite on the champagne: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognac?wprov=sfla1
