Our long national nightmare continues as Magnus Carlsen (Norway) picks up his fourth chess title against Fabiano Caruana (USA) in blitz tiebreakers after the first 12 classic matches all ended in draws (including an "unsportsmanlike" draw in the 12th drawing a ?? from everyone watching. CHESS BEEF!)

Former president George HW Bush dies at age 94.

Every president to die since Nixon (81) in 1994 has lived to be at least 93.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

Bush currently holds the all-time presidential record by living to 94 and (almost) a half. Jimmy Carter turned 94 in October. If he hangs on for another 3 1/2 months, he'll take the record away from Bush. Wouldn't be surprised to see a clue around one or both those facts.

And they just repaved Waterside Drive this week*.

* I use Waterside Drive on my commute home. Because of the way the road was built, it deteriorates rather quickly and badly each time they repave it. It is also on the route used by presidential funerals. In the past, when a president dies, Waterside Drive gets repaved very quickly. This time, they repaved it beforehand.

If recent trends hold, the street can expect to be paved again sometime around 2040.

Yeah, if Jimmy can beat pancreatic cancer, he'll probably make it until a house falls on him. He is a tough ex-POTUS act to follow.

GHWB and Ike are the only two Republican presidents since Teddy that are worth a warm bucket of spit. I'm sorry he let Lee Atwater contaminate his character with that race baiting Willie Horton ad, and pretty much gave the permission slip and playbook for the GOP from then on. The dog whistles used to be much quieter.

(I sense a spanking and relegation to re-re thread  )

He doesn't have to beat it so much as outrun it for a quarter year. I'm betting he'll do that. And if a house falls on him, it won't be one of his own. It was noted after Hurricane [I don't remember] back in [year] that Jimmy's cheap Habitat for Humanity houses withstood the storm much better than those put together by local real estate crooks. When asked for his theory as to why, Carter replied, "We use nails in ours."

I highly recommend The Favourite, a black comedy about 2 women fighting for her majesty's favour in the court of Queen Anne. Wild stuff. Who knew Anne was such a hot mess? (I'm sure you all did, but I didn't)

Stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz. Costumes by Sandy Powell. And bunnies!!! Lots of bunnies

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster)

Urban Meyer will retire as coach of the Ohio State University football team. Meyer won the national championship at Ohio State and earlier won the national championship at Florida. The only other coach to win national championships at multiple schools is Nick Saban (LSU, Alabama).

I don't know if Jeopardy cares about the Golden Globes, but the nominees were announced today.

"Vice", the Dick Cheney biopic starring Christian Bale, lead the film nominations with six.

Comedian George Wallace posted a thread on Twitter on how he'd host the Oscars, and I gotta say, I wish it were him instead.

Don't say horrible things on Twitter.

George Wallace just might get his wish.
