CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Adrianne Woodward is an office assistant from southern California who almost got arrested while running a race. How does that happen?
Adrianne: I had flown across the country to do a half-marathon and unfortunately had injured my leg about three days before the race. So I fell behind the official pace. And when you do that, they tell you if you don't meet the right marker at the right time, you have to come off the course, and I didn't wanna do it. So a police officer told me I had to, and I said, "No. What are you gonna do, arrest me?" He said, "If I have to." So he turned to get his cuffs off the bike, and a whole pack of runners came down the tunnel, and I just kinda jumped in the middle, took off and finished the race.
Alex: We will not tell you where this race occurred.
[Laughter]
Alex: 'Cause that police officer might be watching right now.
Alex: [In a French accent] Gerard Simonette. I've--
Gerard: Gallicized my name.
Alex: Yes, I did. Retired mental health professional, which means what exactly? What did you do?
Gerard: Well, I had a number of positions within the mental health field. I worked for the state of New York in their psychiatric centers, and I started as a recreation therapist, and then I promoted up to a treatment team leader.
Alex: Okay, good for you.
Alex: All right, our champion is Rachel Lindgren. She is from Bend, Oregon, and this young lady has wanted to get a pilot's license for a long time. You've won some money now; that will pay for a lot of lessons. Are you gonna pursue that actively?
Rachel: Oh definitely, yeah. I wanna just fly airplanes wherever I can.
Alex: What is it about flying that excites you so much, piloting them?
Rachel: Oh, just being up in the sky and controlling where you go and getting great views from everywhere.
Alex: You wanna get the view and move.
Rachel: Right.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Adrianne found the Daily Double on the 24th clue. Rachel had $4,600, Gerard was in the red with -$200, and Adrianne was at $3,800. Adrianne wagered $1,500.
MYOPIC BIOPICS $1000: The 1953 biopic of this man shows Tony Curtis dying in the water torture cell illusion, not from peritonitis
(Alex: And we have less than a minute now.)
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
A GOOD BOOK $600: Though written in German, a 1980s bestseller about a man with an incredible nose isn't called "Cologne" but this
SOUP $1000: The full name of this French soup includes the words "crème" and "glacée", telling you it's an iced cream (but not ice cream) soup
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Rachel: $6,000
Adrianne: $5,500
Gerard: $400

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Rachel: Wager $2,801 to cover Adrianne, but no more than $11,199 so as not to fall behind Gerard's doubled score.
Adrianne: You have the hope of surpassing Rachel if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $5,901 to force Rachel to wager to win; but if you're intent on holding on to second place, wager no more than $5,299 to protect your second place position from being usurped by Gerard.
Gerard: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

Re: Monday, January 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
We got the NH,NF from Alex after the players all had a miss on CRUSADERS $1600.
Alex gave Gerard plenty of time to reread DD2 to see the word, “duo”, but it did not matter. Not then and not at the end.
Lots of choices for the unseen clues in CAMPBELLS: Neve, Earl, Bruce, Campbell Scott, Glen, Joseph…
The FJ! clue gave instructions for what to do. I followed step 1 and I followed step 2. Done. The contestants did the same, so advantage leader.

I imagine I’d get credit for answering New Siberian, right? Or does that n make it wrong?

Re: Monday, January 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
With three likeable players today, we started to pull for Gerard after "Byelorussia." (Was hoping for a reversal on that one.) When Alex's deafening silence didn't prompt him to blurt out the necessary full Humperdinck title, my daughter had to tell me to settle down and "be quiet, not silent."

Re: Monday, January 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I had never heard of New Siberia, so I was behind the 8-ball to start with. I might have puzzled it out if I had studied the spelling of the city, but I had a very trying day and wasn't in the right mind to try to figure that out.
Apparently Rachel spent the weekend studying wagering strategy.
I was rooting for Gerrard, but he never really got it going.

Re: Monday, January 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I called a reversal of "My battle", since that seemed reasonably close enough for translation to "My struggle", but I guess not. The Hansel and Gretl clue was painful.
I was proud of getting Vichyssoise based on just the fact that it sounded french and clearly wasn't french onion.
FJ was weird and I've never heard of what they are talking, but as long as you get the directions, it was easy enough I guess - I'll take it!

How was Byelorussia not accepted?
trash pickup: Hospitalers, Hansel & Gretel DD (that was painful to watch), Die Fledermaus, Coast Guard.
easy to suss out the FJ.

Re: Monday, January 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
"Army or the church, symbolized by these 2 color." I could've taken 40 guesses and not gotten red or black. That seemed very obscure.
In fact, I recognized absolutely nothing in those Books, or in Biopics. Or Soups.
"Eliza Doolittle" also rings no bells in the top box.
How was I supposed to know Louis XIV in the top box?
"Odd Couple" was my only get in TV. Didn't realize Cowell was on AGT too.
Considering I had no idea on the top box in Opera, I surprised myself by getting the next 3.
Overthought the "color" DD. Thought they wanted something more specific.
Not even a guess on FJ! Neither half of that name sounded like anything to me.
Lach Trash: Fledermaus, Coast Guard

"Odd Couple" was my only get in TV. Didn't realize Cowell was on AGT too.
Considering I had no idea on the top box in Opera, I surprised myself by getting the next 3.
Overthought the "color" DD. Thought they wanted something more specific.
Not even a guess on FJ! Neither half of that name sounded like anything to me.

Re: Monday, January 22, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Was anyone else surprised by the definition of "color" as a "sensation felt as waves of light hit the retina"? I thought it generally took LSD or something similar before you could actually feel the colors hit your eyeballs. Fortunately, Rachel guessed the correct response, so, as Alex says, "no harm, no foul."
Speaking of which, take a drink, because he said it this very game.

Yeah, that seemed weird to me, though reading the rest of the question makes it the obvious guess in retrospect.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:41 pm Was anyone else surprised by the definition of "color" as a "sensation felt as waves of light hit the retina"? I hate the way this FJ was stated...putting "City" in quotes made me think that it was one of 2 words in the name. Since the location was obviously Siberia, I thought that was all I needed. I didn't focus on "Novo" till the last seconds and almost didn't have enough time to add "New" to the top...

Is it just me, or did Adrianne say "A Pilgrim's Progress"? If so, she should have been negged. There is plenty of precedent for getting articles on book titles wrong.
As a Russian, I would have accepted Gerard's "Belorussia", since the first part is how it's actually pronounced in those countries.
Just last night I was reading about the difference between a CV and resume; they're not the same. Sloppy clue.

She did say "A". And that would make the title wrong, as the full title is The Pilgrim's Progress from This World, to That Which Is to Come.

I got it (I started reading the book a couple of years ago), but I thought this was pretty hard for a top-level clue. I'd be interested in hearing how many other people got it. (Priests wear black. (This is France, so religion means Catholic priesthood.) Red for blood, I guess? I don't know if the French army at the time had red uniforms.)TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:34 pm "Army or the church, symbolized by these 2 color." I could've taken 40 guesses and not gotten red or black. That seemed very obscure.
The play Pygmalion was adapted into the much more famous musical "My Fair Lady." I would think most people would be familiar with that. (I actually missed this one because I wasn't paying attention and thought it was asking for the actress who played Eliza Doolittle.)TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:34 pm "Eliza Doolittle" also rings no bells in the top box.
Louis XIV is the Sun King, famous for building Versailles and a lot of elaborate decorative touches. His style of furniture is pretty famous, or at least guessable. I don't know if it was top-clue easy, but I can't remember the other clues offhand (except for the desk one), so I can't remember how it compares. (Reading the clue, it mentions Versailles, so that's more of a giveaway for the Sun King, if you know that. I think with that clue, it's probably OK as a top box clue.)TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:34 pm How was I supposed to know Louis XIV in the top box?
Since it was a DJ, I had enough time to think about it, and color was the only thing that made sense. It would have been easier with just the first half (hue, saturation, light) and not the second part (sensation on the retina). The second part made it confusing.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:34 pm Overthought the "color" DD. Thought they wanted something more specific.
I thought that the second half, the explanation of the etymology, was overkill. I would have easily gotten it off of Nova + sibirsk. But I guess it wasn't overkill.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:34 pm Not even a guess on FJ! Neither half of that name sounded like anything to me.

I'd have to see the exact wording again, but I believe it was related to a resume being called this elsewhere? In the UK and Ireland (and quite probably a number of other countries, based on my immigrant job-seeker clients referring to their resumes as CVs), the term CV is used, regardless of whether it's an academic CV or what in the US and Canada is called a resume.IronNeck wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2018 10:12 pm Is it just me, or did Adrianne say "A Pilgrim's Progress"?
