CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Mary Kalemkerian is a human rights officer from New York. It's amazing how people are influenced by motion pictures and television series. I get the feeling that that would include you, because you danced in New York on a public street with 99 zombies?

Mary: That's right. Last October, for the first time, I joined the "Thriller" troupe in the New York City Halloween parade. And we learned the choreography for Michael Jackson's "Thriller", which is incredibly complicated, as you might imagine.

Alex: Yes.

Mary: And then, you know, all dressed up as zombies, and I and 99 others marched up 6th Ave. for about an hour doing the choreography on constant loop.

Alex: Good for you. All right.

Alex: Kate Tucci is a blogger from Los Angeles who is obsessed with a different character.

Kate: Yes.

Alex: Harry Potter.

Kate: Very obsessed.

Alex: In what way?

Kate: Well, many ways. Most of my wardrobe is made up of Harry Potter-themed T-shirts and other clothing. I have two Harry Potter-themed tattoos. This one [indicates the "Lumos" tattoo on her right wrist] is the spell for light in the universe, and it kind of inspires me to just spread light a little more.

Alex: Good for you.

Kate: Thank you.

Alex: All right, champ, we have good news for you.

Alan: Oh.

Alex: Your response you gave a little while ago was deemed acceptable by our judges, and that means we are adding $1,600 to your score. You now have $2,800.

Alan: Thank you very much.

Alex: That make you feel good?

Alan: That does, thank you.

Alex: Okay, good.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Kate found the Daily Double on the 23rd clue. Alan had $4,400, Kate had $3,000, and Mary was at $200. Kate wagered $1,500.

ROUGH WATERS $1000: In 2016 the waves at Mavericks in this "lunar" California bay were gnarly, dude, like totally hitting 50 feet

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
MAMMALS $800: Descriptive moniker for this South Asian export
(Mary: What's a wild boar?)

RHYME TIME $600: A sense of excitement in Sao Paulo

RHYME TIME $800: An irritating inconvenience at Balmoral
(Kate: What is a Scottish itch?)

RHYME TIME $1000: The most essential chorus

MASTERCLASS $800: Serena Williams talks about how to master the fundamentals of these, forehands & backhands from the baseline
(Kate: What is a swing?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Alan: $6,200
Kate: $4,500
Mary: $0

CHESTER A. ARTHUR $1200: On his last day in office, Arthur nominated this ex-president for the retired list of the Army with full pay

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Alan: $16,755
Kate: $12,500
Mary: $6,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
MODERN WORDS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place.
Alan: Wager $8,246 to cover Kate.
Kate: You need to wager $301 to cover Mary's doubled score, but no more than $3,990 if you want to top Alan on a Triple Stumper.
Mary: Seeing as you don't have enough money to win on a Triple Stumper (you will lose by at least $2,110), you might try betting $6,101, playing for a win if Kate tries to two-thirds Alan (though, from this position, a wager of all $6,400 is acceptable and perhaps preferred as it forces Kate to cover you).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
In 1994 Wired magazine described this 4-letter word as an idea leaping "from mind to mind... as viruses leap from body to body"

FINAL SCORES
Mary: $6,400 - $6,101 = $299 (What is I ♥ NY?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Kate: $12,500 - $10,000 = $2,500 (What is cool?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Alan: $16,755 - $8,246 = $8,509 (What is yike) (2-day champion: $23,710)
(Alex: And this 4-letter word is very, very much in the news these days.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $8,400

GAME DYNAMICS

CORYAT SCORES
Alan: $17,400, 21 R (including 1 DD), 1 W
Kate: $12,000, 18 R (including 1 DD), 4 W
Mary: $5,600, 10 R (including 1 DD), 4 W
Combined Coryat: $35,000

BATTING AVERAGES
Alan: 21/59 = .356
Kate: 18/59 = .305
Mary: 10/59 = .169
Team: 49/63 = .778

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING CLUES
WINNING CLAMS AT THE CASINO $800: The race & sports book has special cards to let you do this to your winnings, plow them right into the next wager
(Alan: What is let it ride?)
[Originally ruled incorrect; ruled correct during the contestant interviews.]

MAMMALS $400: The roar of this type of monkey can be heard 2 miles away, & also right here

TRADITIONAL ANNIVERSARY GIFTS $400: The 35th:
This marine organism, so be creative & take a trip to the Great Barrier Reef
(Kate: What is pearl?)

ROUGH WATERS $200: (Kelly of the Clue Crew shows a map of San Francisco Bay on the monitor.) San Francisco Bay, with its strong currents & frigid water, was probably too much for three inmates who escaped this prison in June 1962 in a homemade raft

TRADITIONAL ANNIVERSARY GIFTS $600: The 11th:
This metal, so anything Superman-related
(Mary: What is krypton... ite?)
...
(Alex: Yes, the Man of [*].)

MASTERCLASS $200: Christina Aguilera talks about tackling this very difficult song

MASTERCLASS $400: Shonda Rhimes discusses the importance of doing research, as she did when creating & writing this show

(Mary: What's a lottery?)

MASTERCLASS $600: Here's this celebrity chef teaching about knife skills

MASTERCLASS $1000: Steve Martin explains how he found the voice of Ruprecht in this film with Michael Caine
(Alex: And for those of you who are watching, ladies and gentlemen, and were wondering why we credited Alan with a correct response a little while ago, it had to do with the WINNING CLAMS AT THE CASINO, when he came up with "Let it ride".)

SPORTS ON FILM $2000: "Heart Like a Wheel"
(Alan: What is auto racing?)
(Alex: Be more specific.)

PICTURE THE WRITER $400: There's nothing like a dame, particularly this dame surrounded by her mystery novels

PICTURE THE WRITER $800: Here's this author of spy fiction, licensed to type

PICTURE THE WRITER $1200: It was not the best of hair days for this great British author

PICTURE THE WRITER $1600: That's a fab coat on this Irish wit

The reversal clue was in the Casino one for $800: The race & sports book has special cards to let you do this to your winnings, plow them right into the next wager

Alan was negged with “Let it ride” when Alex wanted parlay.

The neg I saw coming a mile away was in MUSEUMS $800: The Getty Villa is modeled after the Villa dei Papiri, a house in this town that was named for a hero & wiped out by Vesuvius

It was only a matter of which player would bite.

Did I solve the FJ! clue?
Spoiler
Image
The FJ! category (even before I saw the clue) looked like a great way to keep me from a 5-smiley week. Yup, not gonna happen. Just to avoid the blank page I did a synonym of “leap” and wrote, “jump.” Perhaps if Grumpy Cat had delivered the clue then I could have solved it.

Kate put another notch in the book for colored hair contestant getting on the show. She could have been playing on Monday with a different wagering strategy than the pretty number one.

Nice title defense by Alan to show knocking off a superchamp was no fluke. I don’t know why he was scared by the DD in CHESTER A. ARTHUR. In a specific category about one president it’s just going to be some basic U.S. history and not something frightening. I was wishing it going to be what the A. stood for and it would have been hilarious if Alan did not know it.

Another day, another second place player who apparently had gave no thought about how to wager in FJ. Maybe Alan will benefit from her gift in the same manner as Rob.

"Sync" here just to write something down for FJ.

No chance on FJ. It was funny all three were stumped and made a cute comment.

I would have gone big on the Arthur DD.

I had a feeling Alan would win when his interview was wiped out completely by Alex giving him money for letting it ride.

Coryat: $35,800
49 R/2 W
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: Brazil thrill, castle hassle, ground strokes, basketball, Pennsylvania Avenue

Meme came to me before Alex was finished reading the clue, but I didn't have a ton of confidence in it. It took me 15-20 seconds to convince myself to stop looking for something better. OTOH, I completely blanked on the Prado. I knew what they were looking for, but the only thing that came to mind was La Scala.

I really have to memorize the de Beauvoir/Sartre Pavlov. That has come up more than once.

I don't love "let it ride" for parlay, but given how poorly pinned the clue was, the judges pretty much had to accept it.

Since this episode contained a clue about Alcatraz, I'll pass along one of my all-time favorite trivial facts: all water at Alcatraz Prison was heated. The jailers didn't want prisoners to be able to prepare for escape attempts by acclimating themselves to cold water.
Sprinkles are for winners.

:( for another poor FJ wager.

How coincidental is this? = I was reading up on Higgs (of Higgs Boson fame) and apparently he had something to do with the word 'MEME'. How convenient for today's FJ :) If not for this, I would have never got this clue.

I wonder if boardie Boson got the FJ.

And of course Gordon Ramsay shows up one day after he shows up on LL.

I instantly got meme, being familiar with Richard Dawkins' original idea for the term.

My daughter got this FJ with no problem, whereas I had no hope at all.

Since Kate's a Harry Potter fan, was she wearing green for Slytherin?

Between Richard Dawkins coining the word and Bryce Harper (in)famously pronouncing it "may-may" I was pretty confident in my recall for FJ today.

Very rushed episode. I figured there would be a video category that they just had to finish. First he jumps right in w/no pregame comments , then the reversal without telling us which clue, and correct me if I missed it, did Alan even get to say anything during the interview?!? Has that happened recently?

Instaget FJ before Alex finished the clue. I even recognized the quote.

Video clues out the ass, and we leave only two clues behind. Yesterday, a much faster paced game left over 10 clues behind. What gives?

3/5 in my Animals wheelhouse. Potbelly pig just wasn't there, and I didn't know that Mustang came from Spanish for "Stray animal", which tripped me up.

Anniversary gifts for $200 felt like a 1-in-3 for gold/silver/bronze and I saw nothing to narrow it down.

Don't recognize the Hermitage at all in the top box.

This roadgeek embarrassingly went 0/5 in Highways.

Also didn't recognize any of those Sports films at all. Battle of the Sexes = tennis felt especially obscure.

I was thinking leaping, infecting, spreading, going viral. I was dancing all around it, but just couldn't quite process it because "4 letter" was completely throwing me off. Major headslap after the TS, because I'm constantly surrounded by memes.

Lach trash: Brazil thrill, Herculaneum (how was there no rebound on this?)

IIRC, the key word was 'alloy'. Gold and silver are metals; bronze is an alloy of copper + tin.

Maybe I won't take the online test. They've had their Chester A. Arthur category. I've missed my best chance. (Yes, I'm sad they didn't finish it.)

What's the opposite of Wired's definition of meme, because that's the only thing I can imagine causing a TSFJ there.

For the second night in a row the board was not a good one for me.

In Alan's place on the last DD I would have made a move and bet all but $2, as I liked the category and I would rather take my chances on a DD than on FJ. I got Grant, but was a little concerned since a bunch of army guys had served as President around that same time period.

FJ was never going to happen for me. The mention of viruses made me guess "worm," but I honestly thought that the clue was going for a psychological term of some kind. I wouldn't have guessed the word "meme" dated back to 1994. I was ready to call this FJ garbage, like the "flight simulator" clue from a few years back, but since several boardies have already reported getting it and seem to have firsthand knowledge of the fact then it was probably an okay clue.

I have a feeling if Mary's and Kate's scores were transposed, Mary would be the new champ.

The first thing that came to mind for FJ was 'viral'. Too many letters but I couldn't think of anything else.
