CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Jesse Darland is from Charleston, South Carolina. Once had a brush-in with the Secret Service.

Jesse: That's right.

Alex: Doesn't sound good.

Jesse: Well, I was working at the Kentucky Derby, checking tickets to make sure the VIPs were in the proper section, and I heard that Vice President Al Gore and his wife were making their way to their seats, so I thought I'd go shake their hands. But I moved a little bit too quickly because someone grabbed my elbows from behind and said, "Just stay right there."

Alex: Ah, and you did.

Jesse: I did.

Alex: Good for you.

Alex: Shari Post is from Aurora, Colorado. We have a lot of new bicycle lanes in the Los Angeles area. You could take advantage of something like that because you and your husband have a bicycle that we don't see that often.

Shari: Yes, tandem bicycle. It comes apart into two pieces, so we can take it on trips. We've gone to lots of cool places. Last trip we did was last summer. We went across Iowa. It's a 400-mile, 7-day bike trip called RAGBRAI.

Alex: Who rides up front?

Shari: My husband does.

Alex: So that means...

Shari: I can just put my feet up and read a book.

[Laughter]

Alex: Yeah, he doesn't know that you're reading.

Shari: Oh no. Don't tell him.

Alex: Okay. Next thing you oughtta do is buy a kayak built for two.

Alex: Matt Lisiecki is our champion. He is from Brooklyn, New York. Once spent a summer living in what sounds like an exotic and perhaps dangerous location.

Matt: Not really dangerous, but yeah, I spent a summer living in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Kind of right where the rainforest bumps up against the mountains. It was the most beautiful place I've ever seen. It was pretty spectacular.

Alex: Good for you.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
HOME FURNISHINGS $400: Use this appropriately named wire shelving unit to cool off your pies or to display your plants
(Matt: What is a cooling rack?)
(Jesse: What is a rack?)
...
(Alex: You had to be specific after Matt's incorrect response.)

DITLOIDS $1000: The classic ditloid, a Solzhenitsyn novel:
1 D I T L O I D

DITLOIDS $800: The talus is one:
206 B I T H B

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Jesse: $6,000
Matt: $4,400

Miss of the day was RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES $1600: The Morning Tulsa Daily World August 4, 1921: “Baseball Scorns Freed Black ___”

Matt blurted, “Slaves” and quickly realized his error too late.

Nice timing with the Oscar category for the FJ! round. I was done writing before the music started. The Jeopardy! Fan has mention of Chaplin who was nominated for writing and acting in 1940’s Best Picture nominee The Great Dictator, but did not have the directing nomination. I know I still would have gone the right way even it I had played the clue as a 50:50 option.

Matt’s pretty number on DD3 worked out fine for him while a miss would have dropped him to 3rd place for the FJ! round.

Anytime someone plays a DD at clue 30 that opens up the discussion for how to wager it. It did not seem like Matt considered the scoreboard or clue placement in the $2000 slot. He also did not play the once bitten, twice shy route in letting his previous -4000 on DD2 affect him.

I had one precall in TRIPLE TALK SONG TITLES and funny that it was the only one the players did not know.

I precalled (Girls x 3) and it is my only precall ever in a song category. I resigned myself to a 1/5 in the category.

Last DD bet was odd - oh well. However, I liked the Champ's intro :)

As for FJ - I was very confident with Olivier and never considered anyone else. Ouch!

Matt rips off his glasses in the intro and the very first clue comtains a reference to Superman.

This time the two week time shift made a category more relevant as we had the Oscars last night. I started with Disney, but got the right guy quickly.

I liked that last wager as it gave Matt the crush going into Final, but it does leave a strategic decision. A miss on a wager to lock game (minimum of $7601) would have (typically) cost him the game, so he can't do that. If he wants to guarantee lead, then only bet $2000 but risk losing opportunity to crush.

Shocked at Matt’s last DD wager!

Stunned...what was Matt doing betting $3000 on the last clue? Basically, if you can’t get to a runaway, itcreally doesn’t matter if you’re $1 ahead or within $1 of a runaway, you control your own destiny in FJ, you answer correctly and win and probably lose if you get it wrong, but the additional $3000 does absolutely nothing for him if he’s right and completely kills him if he misses. You cannot risk falling behind someonecwhen you are guaranteed to be leading into FJ. He got very lucky after a very dumb move.

If he answers the DD correctly he forces one of the others to answer FJ right in order to win. Was it worth it? Probably not. Was he aware of both possibilities at the time? Almost certainly not.

And if you are totally comfortable with the category, wager $7601 and put the game away right there and then while still being able to win from third assuming $9600 doesn't know how to lock him out.

Well, that was stupid. WNEM did yet another Time-Life infomercial with absolutely no announcement, and as usual they're ignoring all the complaints on their Facebook and Twitter pages. And WBKB blocked out the first half of the J! round for a live news update.

Fortunately, it was already up on Reddit, so I was able to catch up quickly.

Thomas for $200 flew over my head since I thought the "he" referred to Thomas and had no idea what was being asked. Derp.

NHO "sleigh bed", and the Santa TOM had me wonder if it was a winter bed, north pole bed, reindeer bed, Mrs. Claus bed...

Why didn't just "rack" get a BMS to "bakers' rack"?

Any reason I should know that Transportation for $800 wanted Lyft over Uber? That seemed like a coinflip.

"Say Say Say" was my only miss in Triple Talk. Title rings no bells whatsoever.

FJ! category didn't have me hopeful. I saw no way to even guess at this one.

Lach Trash: bones in the human body

Pretty obvious FJ in retrospect, but somehow he never occured to me. I went with Chaplin for The Great Dictator.

Actually, they announced it at the end of Friday's game and again shortly before today's game. Not that I like it, but at least I can catch it on WDIV at 7:30.

Then neither their schedule nor Charter Cable's was updated to indicate this.

I first wrote down "Olivier" for FJ (I thought that he might have been nominated for both acting and directing for "Hamlet") but then it struck me that the 1940s is also the decade of "Citizen Kane" and Orson Welles was a wunderkind who did everything.

Plus I don't think Olivier wrote "Hamlet".

(Although, to complicate things, it's not inconceivable that someone could win an Oscar for adapted screenplay for a Shakespeare play.)

Wikipedia says Olivier did write the screenplay for Hamlet, adapted from the original. But he wasn’t nominated for it. He did win for Best Actor and was nominated for Best Director.

I went through the exact same process in a matter of seconds!

I tried out in Charleston but I didn't recognize the editor with the bow tie. I was rooting for Matt anyway. I tore up the DJ board, especially 3 Times & African Cities.

R: 24, W: 2, costing 1200
Coryat: 13,800
FJ: :(
DD: 1/3
LT: baker's rack

timings:
J!: 3:36 + 2:55 = 6:31
DJ: 6:35
FJ: 1:30

Once again, not enough answers in the DJ round leaves me with an abysmal coryat. No answers at all in the bottom two rows of DJ.

Not a chance in FJ. Wrote down John Wayne just to keep from having a blank slate at the reveal.

Chaplin was my first instinct, except for The Circus, which he ended up receiving the first honorary Oscar for because they -didn't- want to nominate him in acting, writing and directing. Then I remembered the year and cluing in on '1940s' it was a quick hop to Charles Montgomery Burns Foster Kane. Incredibly, I guess, The Great Dictator wasn't even an also-ran in my train of thought.
skullturf wrote: Mon Mar 05, 2018 8:46 pm (Although, to complicate things, it's not inconceivable that someone could win an Oscar for adapted screenplay for a Shakespeare play.)
Kenneth Branagh was nominated for his adapted Hamlet screenplay in the 90s. (The only -direct- Shakespeare nomination I can see. E.g., Ernest Lehman was nominated for West Side Story which was an extra step removed from R&J. I'm not digging through those.)
TenPoundHammer wrote: Mon Mar 05, 2018 7:28 pm Any reason I should know that Transportation for $800 wanted Lyft over Uber? That seemed like a coinflip.
My first thought here was "UBER! ...dangit, that wasn't Travis Kalanick in the clue. Obviously it's Lyft." But after research, Uber was also co-founded. Both are involved in self driving car research (heck, Uber and Google Alphabet are/were in a lawsuit over that).

I'm gonna concur on the coinflip/YEKIOYD aspect. Oh well. Happens.
