CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Kurt Buhring is a professor from Indiana. And I wanna hear about what you did last summer because it sounds like noble pro bono work.

Kurt: It was a unique experience. I taught a course at a prison that was nearby, a religion in science course. And it was a wonderful experience. The students were fantastic and exceeded my expectations. And it was really remarkable.

Alex: In what way did they exceed your expectations?

Kurt: I had stereotypes of what to expect coming in, and they were just--they were diligent. They were very, very strong, and they were committed to the course, and hard-working and really, really bright.

Alex: That's great. Way to go.

Alex: Melissa Anthony, graduate student from Alabama.

Melissa: Yes, sir.

Alex: You had something special happen on your wedding day.

Melissa: I did. So my husband, David, is from Mobile, Alabama originally, and that's the home of Mardi Gras, so he's in a Mardi Gras band. Has been since high school. And most of the members were in attendance, so they brought their instruments, and they played us out of the reception.

Alex: That's kind of neat.

Melissa: Mm-hm, yeah.

Alex: I like that.

Alex: Josh Hill is our champion, ladies and gentlemen. He is from Arkansas. And he plays piano...

Josh: Mm-hm.

Alex: In a tiger suit?

Josh: Well, I've been playing piano since grade school, and the tiger was my high school mascot. And I guess it kind of stuck, so I got this tiger suit, and I've been playing piano/keyboard for various conventions, help raise money for charities.

Alex: Good for you.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Melissa found the Daily Double on the 30th clue. Josh had $8,600, Melissa had $2,200, and Kurt was at $1,800. Melissa wagered $1,000.

AUTHORS USE NEW WORDS $1000: This 1955 novel is responsible for popularizing the word "nymphet"

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND

(Melissa: What is a bat?)

SHOW RUNNERS $800: Produced by these 2 actors, the reality show "The Runner" follows contestants across the U.S., not just Boston

SHOW RUNNERS $1000: On "The Sopranos" Mikey Palmice was out for a run when this tracksuit-clad guy nicknamed "Walnuts" caught up with him

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Josh: $8,600
Melissa: $3,200
Kurt: $1,800

If Melissa has a viewing party she needs to hide until clue 2 as “Los Angeles” for this opening clue did not cut it: Ned Flanders & Seymour Skinner are among the runners in a “Run Your Knees for Charity” race in this TV town

All three players should duck if around others when this $800 clue in LAKES & RIVERS goes TS: Greg Lake was the middleman for these prog rock legends

Once again all six categories were sampled in the first segment.

Playing the Monday morning quarterback/20:20 hindsight game: The J! round had Josh controlling the board at clue 29 with the DD available. His choices were 10,000 MANIAC $400 or AUTHORS USE NEW WORDS $1000. He went $400 and with Melissa getting it she had the DD to close the round. Yes, the DD could have been in the second spot, but I think Josh needed better game-something and should have gone for the higher amount remaining. Of course in this game it did not matter.

The FJ! category felt like it could be anything with dozens of possibilities in the J! canon. The clue for me did nothing to narrow matters. Give me a decade, a war, Best Picture win, nationalities, continent…something. I can imagine the writers originally having a little extra in the wording and Alex nixing it because he likes the movie so much and thinking it was too easy.

At least Alex did not read the clue imitating the star’s voice. I matched Kurt’s guess to have something on my sheet.

To those who instagot it with a direct path to the war and movie, good one. I can understand going right to WWII for liberated city and from there completing the puzzle with a movie named for a city the J! likes. Simple connections for the get.

The contestants are on a cold streak in the FJ! round with a threepeat of skunks. I joined Kurt with his miss for a war movie city name that came me in the 30 seconds. No, I do not think the city was liberated last year. The only other movie I could think of with a city name for a title while the music played was Munich.

Some time was wasted as I tried the math of subtracting 15 days from Thanksgiving and seeing if a earlier date in November rang any bells. Useless.

Just to make sure the clue itself is accurate it was easy to find that Thanksgiving (and the premiere) in 1942 was on the 26th. For the liberation there seemed to be a range with the 11th within it.
Josh’s chat with Alex led me to try a little Google-fu. The results include an article, picture and video:

Tough final without much of a TOM besides a place that was liberated during a war. I didn't pick up that it was supposed to have been 15 days after the actual liberation as opposed to 15 days after the anniversary of the liberation, so I joined Kurt with Dunkirk.

The only way I would have had a chance at FJ is if I had approached it by thinking of films that are often ranked as the greatest of all time. My path was by thinking of famous events that occurred around November 10, so there was no hope for me.

I wrestled with the anniversary vs actual date issue too. I settled on liberation connected to WW2. Initially thought of a movie called Is Paris Burning? about the liberation of Paris, but thought it too obscure for J!, then thought of the correct answer next.

I thought that this was yet another incredibly easy FJ but now I'm guessing it polls below 50%.

It's nonetheless a very good FJ clue. Casablanca was released in NYC to coincide with the Allied victory there - and then in wide release to coincide with a summit between FDR and Churchill. The release in 1942 has caused some confusion about Oscar history because the film was nominated to compete in 1943 - based on the fact that it had been released in NYC only in '42 and was not released in LA/nationally until '43 (winning Best Pic, Best Director and Best Screenplay).

I think the writers were counting on the film's incredible popularity, including some of the production facts that have been provided on TCM, for example. Kind of hard to believe that none of these players had enough familiarity with it.

Interestingly, Dunkirk apparently was not liberated until the last days of the war.

I couldn't come up with anything better than Dunkirk. Casablanca seems as if it should have been more gettable. I'm not sure if I would have gotten it some days or what else it would have taken for me to make the connection.

There was a fairly lengthy discussion between J! and DJ! about the pronunciation of Palmice. I believe Alex originally said pal-MEESE. One of the writers/judges/researchers actually had to check into it, and it wasn't re-recorded until after DJ!.

15 days before Thanksgiving would be around....wait, what year? Which day? Forget that. Hmm, came out during a war, Iraq no, Vietn---rofl no, Korea, can't think of anything. OK WWII, Paris, Berlin, Rome, North Afri----Casablanca! That took 20 seconds, but I'll take it.

Josh's interview was an "I told you so" moment for my mom, and for anyone else who harbors negative stereotypes against furries. All the more impressed by his performance.

Nature for $200: any reason I should know that was tortoise and not turtle? "Blah blah blah shelled reptile" in the top box is going to be turtle 99.999999999% of the time.

Bears My Name had "0/5 for Hammer" written all over it, but then I got Queensland/Victoria.

Blanking on "beloved children's author and illustrator" was one of my most embarrassing misses.

Ran the "Lid" category. Also got Emerson, Lake, and Palmer and tartar sauce.

No guess on FJ! Even AT building it up as a famous film led me nowhere.

I never knew the date of the liberation of Casablanca. I worked backward from Thanksgiving Day in the best I could come up with was the Berlin wall but that wasn't exactly liberated by War.

But if I think they had put Thanksgiving Day 1942, it would have been instaget.

DD3 was clue 16 and after the miss he led 13400 to 9000 to 1800 with 14 clues (turned out to be 13 played) worth $20800 remaining. That means Josh added 14000 of that available money in those clues. That's how you get the rare Coryat over 31K.

I understand more clearly what you were asking now. Over those last 13 clues seen, Melissa was not heard from at all. Kurt got only Hollandaise. Josh got everything else other than the TS clues for ELP and tartar. Yes, wow, +14000 for the champ and a combined +800 for the challengers.
