Question 7: Medical Breakthroughs & Discoveries

Post by barandall800 »

7. Ohio is home to the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. Give the answer to one of these pieces of trivia about medical breakthroughs and discoveries (11).

This was a question I wasn't sure I'd be able to credibly put together (science is not my strong suit), but it worked out, and I'm glad that my clues didn't lead anyone astray into a wrong answer, or result in a bunch of drops. South Africa was an early contender for sheep and never let up. At the very beginning, using "sheep" as an answer was unintentional, but after I realized the humorous connection to Think Different I knew I had to include it, especially given the possibility that it wouldn't actually be the sheep (thanks for making that the case). :) In the scoresheet I had to mark it as "a sheep" given that if I hadn't, everyone would have been scored as choosing the SHEEP option.

Framing this question around the Cleveland Clinic, and using (OK, kind of shoehorning in) the trivia about Russell M. Nelson in the heart-lung machine clue, was largely due to a personal connection. My wife had open-heart surgery last year due to a birth defect, and the Clinic did a great job taking care of her. We both were amazed (and a bit comforted, honestly) to learn about the connection between the heart-lung machine (which was used in her surgery) and our faith's leader. Once again -- small world.

Re: TD 425: O-H-I-O (Questions 1-6 Revealed)

Post by jeffwolfe »

Ohio law has a very specific definition of "city": a municipality with a population of at least 5,000. Municipalities that are not cities are villages. Townships are unincorporated areas, and not municipalities at all. The population of Rome, Ohio, at the last census was 94.

This is provided for information and not as a challenge to the ruling.

Question 8: Ohio Sports

Post by barandall800 »

8. There are a wide variety of major league sports franchises that play in Ohio. Name a major league sports franchise (NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB, or MLS) located in Ohio, or one of the venues they call home (16).

Cleveland was pretty studiously avoided here (the Indians went completely unused), and fairly unsurprisingly, more teams were picked than stadiums. Another personal note: back in the 2016 World Series, I rooted for the Cubs, mostly because I wanted them to finally break their curse, and I didn't really have any connection to the Indians. Fast forward to a bit later, when I started dating my wife and becoming a fan of Ohio sports ... and then realizing I had rooted against one of my new favorite teams. (She still won't let me live it down. :P)

I'm curious if you would've accepted "Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse" as an acceptable response for Q5. I was tempted but realized I did not have a strong argument to back me up. Is there an "official" list of MCU films?

Yes, there is a list. No, Into the Spiderverse is not on it.

I'm in first place now because I dropped the sports team question. A damned good thing too, because I initially said the Reds before exercising my drop.

Question 9: Presidential Ohio

Post by barandall800 »

One more question for tonight ...

9. Not only is Ohio the home of many famous people (as demonstrated in question 6), it is also the birthplace or adopted home state of various U.S. presidents and presidential candidates. Name one of the pictured presidents or presidential candidates from Ohio (10).

Two recent presidential candidates were the most popular here (Dennis Kucinich, like South Africa on question 7, was a contender for sheep basically from the get go). The most recent presidential candidate (so recent he's still running) was a singleton. The most popular actual president was the one with the shortest administration.

(Also, an apology to the two players who answered Warren G. Harding. In my effort to include as many potential responses as possible, I used a couple different lists of Ohio-related presidents [those who were born in Ohio, those who were primarily associated with it, etc.], and in the process, inadvertently excluded Harding from the answers somehow, even though he was indeed from Ohio. By the time I noticed this [when the first entry giving him as an answer came in], it was too late to change anything without being unfair to the first few entries.)

Question 10: We All Scream for Ice Cream!

Post by barandall800 »

10. One of the most rewarding discoveries I’ve made about life in Ohio is that there is a LOT of incredible ice cream here. Name one of the following ice cream brands/companies based on clues about them (13).

I've always been quite fond of ice cream (I have a major sweet tooth). But I really mean it when I say that the ice cream in Ohio has been life-changing. I'm very, very obsessed with ice cream now -- and perhaps a little pickier about where it comes from (though my motto is that "I'll never say no to ice cream" :P). Fun fact: except for Coolhaus (which I just learned about a few months ago, and included partly as a test to see how well-known it was) and Carvel, I have tried ice cream from each of these answers. Which one is my favorite? That's hard to say, but I'd HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Jeni's. It's fancy ice cream, so a bit pricier than most, but so incredible. If you're not fortunate enough to live near a location, they ship nationwide (and you may even be able to find some at your local grocery store). Graeter's and Tillamook are also top-notch, and available in many places across the U.S.

The responses here were spread around pretty well, and our co-sheeps were not too large. I believe this is our first question not to have a singleton. The TOM I used for Häagen-Dazs was one I didn't know until I was researching for this game.

Question 11: Concert Halls

Post by barandall800 »

We've arrived at our penultimate question ...

11. The world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra is based in historic Severance Hall. Name one of these well-known performing arts venues based on their initials and location (13).

This question had the most drops of the game. The unused answers consist of two that might have been a little too tricky -- and Radio City Music Hall. Hmm. :) Despite the large number of drops, we had a fair amount of people congregating at Carnegie Hall (figuratively, not literally).

In high school, I competed in a trivia competition at Carnegie Hall.

(That is, the Carnegie Hall on the campus of Washburn University in Topeka.)

Haven’t heard of Jeni’s ice cream or a few others in this list. I’m really digging Van Leeuwen right now. They have a vegan line that’s pretty delicious!

A toss up between Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall for me; could cost me a chance at my first-ever podium. Oh well, I was up there for much longer than I expected!

Question 12: Ohio Trivia

Post by barandall800 »

Here we are, the final question!

12. To close, here’s a collection of Ohio potpourri. Give the answer to one of these Ohio-themed trivia clues (12).

Well, quite a lot of you know where the Pro Football Hall of Fame is. And having recently found out about Cincinnati chili myself, I was surprised to see how many of you knew about that. I am not a fan of beans, so I was wary of trying said chili until I discovered you didn't have to have it with beans (I ordered it 3-way style). It was love at first bite. :)

For your reference, here's a picture of Cincinnati chili:

Our first group of players didn't quite make it up to the podium ... but they do get to drown their sorrows in ice cream! May I recommend a double scoop featuring Jeni's Strawberry Buttermilk and Sweet Cream Biscuits & Peach Jam? :)

Our next group of players will be nearby, enjoying a nice boat ride on Lake Erie (with some delicious pierogies for dinner).

These following players did a great job ... but came up just short of the podium. A lot like Cleveland sports! :P  They get to enjoy an Indians game at Progressive Field and a Browns game at First Energy Stadium.

The Top 3!

Post by barandall800 »

And now, our podium finishers! They get a VIP tour of places like Severance Hall, the Ohio State University, and the Terminal Tower, led by Ohio celebrities Drew Carey and Macy Gray. (I'd pay money to see that duo give a tour. :))
