THEY'RE MY FRIENDS $400: “Phone-A-Friend” is gone on this game show, but you can bring the friend to the studio as your “Plus-One”
This clue could have been in the KILLED OFF THE TV SHOW category.
One for cheezguyty: Has the opening pick of the DJ! round ever been a first-box DD?
Big move by Sam to put the game at DD3 in recognizing the "I" of "I" ON SCIENCE was going to give a big helpful hint in solving.
The FJ! clue pointed to a J! favorite and all that that was left was to make sure to write the author's name and not a work.
Laughing at how short Ryan Bilger's time was at the top of the 2021 Tracker. Four wins and $107K+ does not hold up like it used to do.

The last first-box DD (6/25/18) was also a 1st-clue pick.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 11:12 am One for cheezguyty: Has the opening pick of the DJ! round ever been a first-box DD?

Happy birthday, Johnny Gilbert. Awesxome work, Sam.
Something seemed off on that France TS. For some reason, France just didn't seem to fit the clue for me, either.
All but "tragic magic" in Rhyme Time, but I otherwise struggled on the J! board.
0/5 in Horses. That whole category felt very YEKIOYD. NHO "groom" in a horse context.
All but "infrared" in Science, all but "bough" in 5-Letter, but 0/5 in Supreme Court CLerks.
No guess on FJ! Can't say I recognize the correct response whatsoever.

Let me be the first boardie not named TPH to say I have never, ever heard of Shirley Jackson in my life. This was the stand-and-stare of all stand-and-stares. Not even a glimmer of recognition at the reveal. It happens. Evidently.

Instaget FJ here. Tremendous job Sam, way to dominate the game start to finish.
Historical stat of the day (I guess): Sam's $113k first-four day total trails only those of James, Austin Rogers and Andrew Pau over the last five years. Very impressive stuff.

Re: Monday, July 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
It was interesting to hear Alex mention the rarity of a DD in the top box. I don't know that we've ever heard it acknowledged on the show before that the DDs are not randomly distributed.

I've hear of The Lottery, but you could've gave me all day & I wasn't coming up with Shirley Jackson. Went with Mary Shelley just to have something.

Re: Monday, July 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
FJ consisted of 2 seconds to recognize that 1948 short story + dark/psychological etc + woman author had to be The Lottery, followed by 20 seconds of repeating "Shirley....Shirey...err..." to myself before remembering 'Jackson'. That would've been the most aggravating miss in years. Didn't know she had an award named after her.
I'm so far behind on so many shows that I debated muting the TV during the "Killed off..." category, but thankfully it was 5 clues about stuff I already knew, or shows I don't care about.

Instaget for me - I read The Lottery at age 12 or 13. Five minutes to read, and you will never forget it. I recommend it highly.

Wow, very good job today, Sam! I'm impressed with your gutsy wagering in this game as well as the fact that you were finally able to make it a runaway! Hopefully you'll win tomorrow so that we can finally have a post-James 5-day champ!

For FJ, I said Sylvia Plath, but I wasn't at all sure. I kept telling myself "There's another one I can never remember who wrote a story I can never remember." I was right!
Teems with quiet fun.
