You said you wanted to be constructive, but in the same post, you clearly went after Casket with the Fox News comment. Then you did it again with me. Seems flamey, not constructive.

As far as the OP’s comment "Sad, because I feel like we are way past due for another female superchampion" goes, I interpreted this as saying that the OP felt Lindsey had the makings of a superchampion, with the implication being that Susan may not. That implication may well have been inadvertent and not intentional, but to me (and Casket) it was there.

Also, please identify in my post where I told you what you think and say.
For the record: OP = Original Poster. My preference is to address the content of posts, not posters/boardies.

Q: Also, please identify in my post where I told you what you think and say.
A: Sorry, I wasn't victimized here, and I improperly applied the laws of interpretation/implication that led to the leap of faith from the OP's post. I assumed all of us are required to properly explain everything we mean and everything we don't mean with every post. First they came for MasterCone, and I did not say anything because I am not Mastercone....

For the record, I do love America, but opposed the invasion of Iraq, and abhor the demonization of the Dixie Chicks, Colin Kapernick, and the list goes on. My disdain for FNC is palpable, and I should not use them as a lodestar for hate. They are enlightened compared to the Alex Jones's and Breitbart ilk.

Every post we ever make says more about us than the topic of the post. I have deleted hundreds of drafts because they don't add to the dialog and therefore are about me. I am happy to say nice things about Susan - but I will go to the trouble to find her name and I will not flip the script on someone else's post.

For CR:

Sorry, but you boldfaced the content, not me. The first two lines were about Jeopardy Lindsey and completely flattering albeit bittersweet about her fate. You'll need Trump's sharpie if you plan to change your story ;).

For all:
Sorry about this - I invite anyone (particularly cthulhu and CR) to PM me for point of view, enlightenment (mine or yours), or even a good old non-Canadian apology or non-French surrender! I don't think I can be any clearer.

As to the game itself and returning to topic - no luck for me on FJ, another Tennessee Williams here. From boardie responses, it sounds like something Lindsey should have had an advantage on with her trivia background. Go Susan, and take advantage of your good timing!

FTR, I just want to state that the main reason why I don't think Susan will streak herself is because players who win with less than $10K generally do not last more than a day. Obviously there are exceptions to this (Gilbert Collins had a similar total on his first day and went on to qualify for the TOC with 4 more wins), but generally speaking a player who wins with that little cash has a short time in the spotlight.

Is there still a chance she COULD streak? Absolutely. Theoretically ANY player who goes on Jeopardy has a chance of going on a long run depending on the circumstances of their games as well as the luck they receive (or lack thereof). It's just that the likelihood of a player who doesn't win that much on their first day doing so has historically been very low.

I don't think there's anything wrong with suggesting that Lindsey in particular appeared to have the makings of a superchamp. To do so is no slight to Susan. Certainly Susan might win a bunch more games. However, it was Lindsey, not Susan, who dominated this game.
Sprinkles are for winners.

The majority of winners generally do not last more than a day. Roughly 58% of one-day champs lose their second game. Among those that won with less than $10,000, the losing rate is 62%.

Interesting stuff. How'd you calculate those percentages?

Copy the list of matchups from each season page on the Archive and paste into a spreadsheet, separating into three columns. Filter out all tournament games. The leftmost column is the returning champion (minus a few edge cases like after a five-day retirement or a triple-zero game). Check for any games with co-champs or players who were brought back. Use a formula to count the number of consecutive rows with the same name to get each player's total wins and a PivotTable to get the overall counts.

56 R (Stacy Abrams was my only miss today.)
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Elton John, Hoosier Poet, General Electric, Golden Horde, Snidely Whiplash, Grandstand, (Rio Grande), Bryce Canyon

I was very excited to see Isabella d'Este on today's show. She is one of my favorite historical figures of all time. My Renaissance book has a whole page about her. She ruled Mantua during her husband's captivity during a war with Venice. She was once dubbed "The Prima Donna of the World" by a poet. She was in fact 60 years old when she sat for the Titian painting.

It was such a shame to see Lindsey lose. She played very well but lost on a TS final where the second place bet low.

I would definitely put Lindsey Berns, along with Kaya Chua, Rene Bender, Becca Arm, Julia Kite, Kerri Griffith, Kim Taylor, and E. A. Srere as one of the best female J! non-winners.

I watched the movie version of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf once. I don't think I've ever hated a movie more (where it was a quality movie, not a piece of junk), and it was the material not the execution.

I knew Lindsey was doomed when she called herself Jeopardy Lindsey. One might even say it was hubris.

On 'opposable thumb', IIRC the closed captioning said 'disposable thumb' and I thought they were going to take her money away.

My CC (I guess they are all the same?) also said "disposable", but I clearly heard "opposable" (maybe she said "an opposable"). I had paused the DVR while twelvefootgirl finished a long phone call because I thought Alex was going to make a somber announcement about his health due to recent downturns. I got punk'd by the tape delay.

Maybe it's been discussed, or maybe too far off topic of a game thread, but I would hope that they have a successor picked and he/she would appear in a few games with Alex, and maybe even call some clues. It seems unfair to the successor to come on cold turkey without the express endorsement and support of Alex. Just another of several no-win scenarios, there is no winning hand here.

Don't forget Kim Taylor (the one from Season 26), who until earlier this year had the highest known Coryat ever for a losing challenger (with $24,800).

My vote is for two to five shows of memories from the Trebek era. The new host could host the memory shows, maybe provide some voiceover narration, that kind of thing. Ideally, of course, Trebek would feel well enough to participate. In any event, I agree we need some kind of transition. Just ending with a Trebek game on a Friday and picking up with a New-Host game on a Monday wouldn't feel right.

Yes, the CC had "disposable" and copied that when I archived the game. After a correction suggestion came in I fixed it there as well as in my opening post in this thread. It's another lesson for me in archiving the current games to not solely rely on the CC.

For the Alex discussion it's probably best to keep things in hopeful category for now concentrating on Alex getting better instead of jumping ahead to other things not fully appropriate at this time.

Instaget FJ, but I had an advantage. I went to see a pair of Albee's plays produced at my university in 1977. They were The Sandbox, and The Death of Bessie Smith. "Bessie" was one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen in my coddled life, and I was crying smeary tears as the house lights went up.

I started ranting to my friends, who had invited me, about what an upsetting, horrible experience that was, and how could anyone write that, let alone produce it, and what terrible people the characters were, etc. This short, slight man had stepped into our circle of conversation right after I started. (I'm generally an introvert - it takes a lot for me to have an outburst like that, but try seeing the play sometime.)

So, I ran out of words and was just standing there, indignant and offended, when one of my friends quietly said, "Let me introduce you to Edward Albee". And I just stared at him in disbelief. He grinned and said, "Glad you appreciated it. Thanks for coming." And sauntered off to get some punch.

Made what you might call an indelible memory. Of course, after that, I went and read up on him and his controversies. So, Instaget. Lol.

The mathematician in me has to point out that technically speaking and by definition, 100% of one-day champs lose their second game.

But yeah, we know what you mean.

It seems like it'd be more strange if sharing a last name by itself would be consciously avoided, without any other connection between the two. Not that I know the inner workings of the show, by any means.

Totally didn't guess Neil Simon myself.

I would say she was doomed more by whiffing a very easy geographic DD (which a trivia buff should have known instantly--national parks and the states they are in are pretty basic stuff) than by the FJ situation. She came across as a great player, but really, that was a ridiculous DD to miss. I probably knew Big Bend National Park was in Texas when I was 10 years old from grade school geography. Rio Grande comes naturally from there. When the clue was read, I was getting after her for not betting more. When she struggled, I was dumbfounded. Getting that gimme DD would have likely made FJ mostly moot.

Unless Lindsey was in your 4th grade class isn't "ridiculous DD?" a little harsh? I happened to learn about the Mohorovicic discontinuity from "My Weekly Reader" in 6th grade. That doesn't make it a $200 clue. (That and Albert Schweitzer are the grand total of my learnings from that rag, lol).

Prepping for J! is a zero sum game and all the required Shakespeare/Opera study comes at the expense of something else. Maybe this is ground level trivia knowledge, but she didn't seem to be have ever known this. Geography has a lot of derivative subsets (Capitals, largest cities, mountain ranges, rivers, borders, etc..), and getting down to National Park level is a ways down the list. The Snake River was a pretty good WAG under pressure. I got hung up in Montana/Wyoming area and Wagged the Colorado River. The poll is already in, but this might have been a good question.

The playwright polled at 35% (so far), so FJ was definitely a bad draw. She didn't blow it or choke, she just got taken by the perfect storm. Susan's performance was like this year's Nobel Chemistry laureate, Dr. Goodenough.

"Grandstand" is given, but how about "showboat"? It doesn't quite match the "main seating area" TOM, but there's precedent for a clue where it's correct despite being against the TOM. (I'm guessing it also doesn't quite fit as a rhyme, but it's also a lot closer to being an internal rhyme than most words.)
