Doggies!
Spoiler

Image
Erin did just enough (7800+4000 at DD3 against Ed's 24600) to prevent the lock through the 8 clues remaining on the board. Alex made sure Erin knew she had a chance, "Close, but not a runaway." Erin went big to attempt to steal the game and not worrying about second place.

Erin leaves with the title and yesterday's payday and Dmitriy gets out with 2nd place money so everyone gets something out of the experience. Ed pockets the most money and gets to play again after a promising debut.

The FJ! clue was one where I was happy to see how the "Rose" repetition led to a famous quote and who to attribute it to for a before music solve. Ouch for anyone who gets to the quote and does not know the name. And good luck to someone trying to find the needle in the haystack hitting upon the name with a blind guess.

No, you'll have to take it up with the author.

Ed got less money for knowing this than I did.

I bet a lot of people don't realize the quote was from a children's book. I didn't at the time, but all the hints were there.

Which quote? The well-known recursion is from the poem "Sacred Emily" published in the book Geography and Plays (not a children's book).

I had never heard of Stein writing a children’s book, but all those Rose clues pointed me to either Stein or someone I was never getting.

Quote is a quote is a quote is a quote. I'm gonna pretend the triple post was intentional. ;)

Good point on the original of the quote, but it does appear in The World is Round, so I'm technically correct. The best kind of correct.

http://wetoowerechildren.blogspot.com/2 ... round.html

She references it throughout her works, too, which is why it's her best known quote, I suppose.

That was alllllmost me. Got on the right track immediately, brainfarted on the name, but pulled it out at the last second after sorting through first names with the correct initial.

Ahahaha, me too, now.

I don't know why "Rose is a..." is better-appreciated than the immortal words from the same poem, "Pat ten patent, Pat ten patent."

In addition to the examples in Myron's link, in "How to Write", she writes "it is natural to suppose/ That a rose is a rose is a rose."

Hermes, right?

Like Bigdogstalfos, I got it right by choosing between Stein and "I have no idea".

Any reason I should know that Spanish show is on Univison and not Telemnudo? That felt like MASSIVE negbait, and I see no way to know how it would be one over the other.

What was the TOM for Columbus on Explorers for $200, or television on London for $400? I instantly rejected "television" on the latter because wasn't that Philo T. Farnsworth?

NHO "The Hills".

Ran Minnesota.

Codex, Automatons, and Pop Culture felt tough. I was 1R 1W in all of them.

I had utterly zero clue on this. "Rose" led me to "a rose by any other name" which had me wondering if there was a Juliet I was missing. I've heard of "a rose is a rose is a rose", but somehow conflated it with "a rose by any other name" over time. I know there is a person named Gertrude Stein, but I don't know thing one about her. That seems to trip me a lot.

Man, I got majorly taken to the woodshed in DJ for knowing very little about British culture or US pop culture. It took a clutch run at the end for me just to salvage a 24000 Coryat. Definitely not hoping to see that kind of board if I ever get on the show.

Impressive debut for Ed. 30 right, not too shabby!

Within the past day or two, a story about the "glass floor" from Huffpost came up on my Twitter feed. I had never heard of that phrase used before figuratively, but it makes sense. Wouldn't really have needed to know about the "glass floor" for the clue since "glass ceiling" was sufficient to figure out the correct response, but it's almost eerie how J! follows me around.

Another instance: Just this morning I got an email from AMC Theaters about a new VOD streaming service they're offering, and one of the movies available was Hugo. I would have "known" the response but would have been tongue-tied at "that movie with the kid in Paris and the clock" if I hadn't just refreshed my knowledge.

Anyone else mix up Erik the Red with Erik'sson, Leif? Nobody? Just me?

Got to "a rose is a rose..." for FJ!, but had no idea who wrote it. Unfortunately, the only things I associate with Gertrude Stein are German wine and turpentine.
