Steve led at break one, at DD1's uncovering, after the J! round, at DD2 and at DD3's uncovering. The closing part of the game went to Andrew and he capped it with the FJ! clue solve.

Even though the FJ! category was wide open I still tried three precalls for fun with Cather, Wharton and Vonnegut.

The FJ! clue had Alex correct as I had the wrong novel in mind while being correct for the writer. Cannery Row was wrong decade for my guess of the work while I did know TGOW was certainly older than 1952. EoE? Yeah, I probably would have had at least a half dozen other guesses before pegging that one. No matter, a solve is a solve.

During think time my other thought was off base as I wondered who wrote, Chinatown? With no name coming to mind (turns out there was no novel) there was nothing to switch to, keeping me out of trouble.

Steve had a nice run and even with the FJ! clue solve it was a loss anyway.

If the clue had been TS then Andrew would have won 2799 to 100 to 0 while Steve could have covered Miriam's possible 17200 with 5200 and had 6799 on a miss. Today, no difference, while on another day, wagering can matter.

For this week the 5-a-day schedule was still in effect? When it changes to 3 one day and 2 the next day then that can change things like the lunch break factor, stamina, etc.

I think it's officially fair to dub this as the "Season 36 Thursday curse".

Didn't this author make a special guest appearance in a recent FJ clue about Woody Guthrie? Seems a little soon to be dredging up this guy again.

Count me in for 'right author, wrong novel'. Do I smell a poll question?

I just said "this sounds like something from (insert author here)" and didn't think too hard about which book it was

Hadn't even thought about this novel since the tv mini-series from years back, with Jane Seymour playing against type as one bad mama.

I'm with this. I think the intended path was simply "sounds like Steinbeck". The Old Man and the Sea was what sprang first to mind based on the year and water. It doesn't make a lot of sense otherwise, but I can't help what springs to mind, can i?

I agree that Chinatown would have been an interesting distractor if it were a novel and I knew who wrote it.

The writers missed out by not putting the Daily Double in the category called "Daily Double".

How to Train Your Dragon may be one of the most disappointing stand-and-stares ever.

====

Ran New Testament Quotes, all but $1,000 in Hobbies and Bet It "All", all but $2,000 in Fictional Flags and Strong Language.

"Blah Blah Blah Cascades" = NOT Washington = OMG MASSIVE MASSIVE NEGBAIT.

Embarrassing miss: somehow got "Gray's Anatomy" and "Orange Is the New Black" mixed up. NHO the other four shows.

Somehow I blanked on where the Rockies are, but recovered by matching Adirondack to New York.

A story about "dry years"? That sounds like The Grapes of Wrath, which despite being a terrible book, I know was written by John Steinbeck. Huh, right author, wrong book.

Lach trash: Adam, stonewalling, Haymarket Square, Brawny, How to Train Your Dragon. Also got the Captain Nemo DD.

Another one for the "right author, wrong book" pile. Knew it was way too late for TGOW, but had nothing better so I stuck with Steinbeck.

Hepburn screwball comedy "Bringing Up _____" for 2000??!?!? No bueno, J! writers

Isn't that more "right author, not sure which book"? I went the same way. The quote made me think of Steinbeck. I knew Grapes of Wrath was too early to be the source. But the quote still sounded like Steinbeck so I stuck with him. I figured it would be Tortilla Flats or Cannery Row or East of Eden or, heck, The Winter of Our Discontent. (I was reasonably certain it wouldn't be Of Mice and Men or The Pearl or The Red Pony.)

Note to self: It's Tortilla FLAT. No S. Remember that or you might be one sad penguin on the show some day.

I was thinking they should've put it in the category called BET IT "ALL". Then Alex could announce the Daily Double and say, "And did I hear you correctly? Bet it ALL?"

Imagine how many collective remotes would have been thrown at the TV screen had FJ! asked for the novel instead of the author - including mine. Yup, I had "Grapes of Wrath" in mind too. Mid-1900s (probably California) valley ----> Steinbeck --> write it down, don't think about it. Is there such a thing as pos-bait?

For the record, Grapes of Wrath was published in 1939. I'm so glad I didn't know that. The film with Henry Fonda was 1940. Didn't know that either. Both would have tripped me up, but I probably would have shrugged and said, "Well, he wrote other stuff too, and who else could it be?"

I clammed up a little too much in geography, my Achilles heel - Rockies? Colorado, of course. That's where Coors is made, and why the cans have the mountains on them, and why Sam Elliott (NOT Sam Waterston!) talks about that fresh, Rocky Mountain water. But it's fourth row, so I clam up, because the Rockies go elsewhere - just like how Salt Lake City isn't the only college city in Utah that could house BYU. Nope. At least I rang in on Santa Fe.

I knew too much for my own good in the double helix clue. I got fixated on "hydrogen bond", which made me think about surface tension in water. Should have skipped ahead to 1953, and paid attention to the category - although the category wasn't daily "double" in quotes, the clue didn't have the word double in it, and most of the other responses had "double" if the clue didn't, so of course the response probably would have it.

I think I would have stood and stared at "landscape" for 10 minutes before getting it. That's a $200 clue? I got the last 3 in the hobby category right with absolutely no problem, but the first two confused me.

Can't believe I said "Nero" instead of "Nemo". That said, I didn't really know that one - it was just "submarine + N = Nero". No, wait, Nemo! Just keep playing, just keep playing, just keep playing...

Has the taping schedule changed to separate days of 3 and 2 episodes?

Per the "Alex Trebek announces pancreatic cancer" thread, yes - he was having coughing fits during a show per someone here, and they had to retape some stuff. Those episodes are supposed to air January. I guess he just doesn't have the energy to do both morning and afternoon sessions.

Lots of quality trash in tonight's game, including the one TPH noted.

$400 NEW TESTAMENT QUOTES: "For as in" him "all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive"
$400 MOVIE CHALLENGE: Hiccup is the hero of this animated trilogy about Vikings & the creatures they once feared
$600 BET IT "ALL"!: Structural term to engage in stalling tactics & to refuse to give information
$600 MOUNTAIN STATES: Mount Lassen, at the southern end of the Cascades
$800 COLOR TELEVISION: Led by Kevin Costner, a ranching family in Montana faces off against those encroaching on their land in this series
$1000 COLOR TELEVISION: Inspired by stories of G.K. Chesterton, this show features a Catholic priest with a knack for solving mysteries in an English village
$1200 STRONG LANGUAGE: Burly, or the maker of tear-a-square paper towels
$2000 "H"ISTORY: A group known as the "Chicago 8" were blamed for the violence during an 1886 riot in this Chicago square
$2000 FICTIONAL FLAGS FLYING: In "Nostromo", this author describes the flag of Costaguana as red & yellow with 2 palm trees
$2000 STRONG LANGUAGE: This word used to describe the strength or the flavor of coffee comes from the Latin for "oak tree"

That's not enough for a fourth podium win, even if you got all $11,000 of it. (I picked up $7200.) But it would get you close. That last one confused both me and the missus. We thought they were looking for a coffee-related word that describes the strength or flavor of ANY coffee--kind of like bouquet for wine. But they wanted a word describing a PARTICULAR strength/flavor. If we'd understood that... we probably still would have clammed. But the correct response wouldn't have been as surprising.
