Coryat: 28,200
39 R/3 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Arkansas (DD), certiorari, basketball, ostentatious, John Nash (DD), Blaise Pascal, Caddyshack

Great game by both Kyle and Emma, and Dhruv did his best against tall odds. I thought FJ! was pretty easy, but I got worried for Emma when she seemed to have a pained expression near the end of the Think Music. Glad to see her pull it out.

Anyone else pronounce "diabetes" in the style of Wilford Brimley?
soxfan99 wrote: Mon Nov 11, 2019 10:40 pm Would just "cert" have been accepted for certiorari? I'm not sure I would have risked bungling the pronunciation of the full word, but I knew it was a "writ of cert," which is a pretty common phrasing of it.
I would BMS it, particularly as a bottom-row clue in a TOC game. The abbreviation is common, but I would think they'd expect contestants to demonstrate knowledge of the full word.
harrumph wrote: Mon Nov 11, 2019 11:14 pm I will be checking the box in the weekly poll stating that I teared up at Dhruv's FJ response.

Pancreatic cancer can throw you curveballs. I found out today that I have to do another three months of chemo in order to be operable. But my long term survival chances will be quite good after that. I'm amazed at how well Alex is performing during this TOC; he's authoritative.
Glad to hear that your prognosis is good. I will be praying for you.

Emma started slow (they all did) but once she got going, it was going to be difficult for her opponents. Kyle made the obvious move on that DD to put himself in position to steal the game but Emma brushed it off and didn’t lose her mojo.

Great gesture with that FJ answer. Alex had trouble keeping it together. I believe it was James who said that this was a tough tournament to tape...we can see why.

There was a film about him this year?

That was my first thought as well, but the right answer came to me in time.

Yes, and I was also surprised that they avoided FACETIOUS and/or ABSTEMIOUS.

(perhaps deemed too easy for the ToC because these are often cited as "the only words that use the five vowels in order")

I was waiting for SEQUOIA to show up... but maybe that was too easy for TOC too.

I was just teasing because there were two years (2001 film, 1994 Nobel) in the clue.

Nope. I usually go with 'the BEET-us', or simply 'the sugar'.

Let's not get started on editor wars. They're just as tiresome as OS wars (FTR, I used emacs back in the day, too)

The Archive was written entirely in emacs and I still use it for most small edits although I've largely switched over to VS Code. I wish its emacs-like indent formatter extension worked better. Emacs had the best indent function.

In "The Brethren," Bob Woodward has the SC Justices always referring to it as "granting cert," and only uses the full word a couple of times. But I'm thinking the shortened version would probably not be accepted, but would get an opportunity for expansion instead of an outright neg.

I'm also longtime EMACS user, but it's probably been about a decade now since I've used it much.
